Current OL on roster who can be repositioned to play Center?

Feb 18, 2022, 11:23 AM

Anyone curious about OL players on the current roster who might be successfully re-positioned to play Center?

We tried that with Bockhorst last year without success. However, football is not without history of success at this switch. Going way back to Jim Bundren (who played LT at Clemson and made all-ACC, if I remember correctly), he played Center in the NFL for a little while.

With H.Rayburn gone and M.Trotter ???, then is there any speculation about other OL who might get trained to play Center and provide competition for R.Linthicum and T.Howard?

Mitchell Mayes comes to mind as a candidate to compete at Center; he's quick enough to play RT and has enough experience to know the line calls.

Any other guesses or insights?

Will Putnam is the best bet of the current OL to move from G to C. The hope I have is that Lithicum can come on and take the job. This kid was #2 C in the country out of high school! Surely we didn't miss on him that badly did we?

Would love it if Putnam could transition to center. The way Dabo raved about Pennington, he's probably going to be ready to start at RG. Tate can start at LG. McFadden and Parks at LT/RT

Depth: Mayes, Williams, Howard

Need to develop ASAP: Leigh, Linthicum

Would love to see if Putnam can work out at Center. (Just because the Bockhorst experiment didn't work out doesn't mean that Putnam can't do much better.)

Putnam only has to be OK in the starters OL 'dream wish' which LeonTrotsky® had drawn up for us to have a great shot at a whoop'n good OL in 2023.
