Counterfeit Tickets

I was one of those many people looking for tickets in Charlotte before the game. I've never bought tickets from the "ticket vultures" in the past. However, this time I broke down and bought 2 paper tickets (a $320.00 mistake). After waiting in the throng of fans for almost 2 hours we finally got to the security scanners (4:00 left in the first qtr). She scanned my ticket and it was fine. Then she scanned the second ticket and it didn't work. She didn't know how to scan the number in manually, and had to ask for assistance. After a couple of minutes someone else came over and manually entered the numbers...no success. They then found the gate manager who took the tickets into his office. He returned a few minutes later to tell us that both of the tickets were counterfeit and had already been scanned into the stadium...We would not be allowed to enter. He couldn't explain to me how my ticket scanned successfully. There were 2 other couples standing there with similar problems. At that point there were no more people coming into the gate, and the only people around were the security and cleanup crews. We then disgustedly walked back to our tailgate. We saw/met 4 other people who had been denied admission for bogus tickets. One couple bought theirs on Ticket Master...not paper tickets. The gate manager suggested that whenever we're buying paper tickets that we have the seller come with us to the gate to see if it will "prescan" and that way you can determine if it is legitimate. I sternly pointed out to him that the 4000 people at this gate waiting to get into his stadium would not take kindly to me forging ahead of them. Does anyone have any insight as to how you could ever tell if the paper tickets are legitimate? My brother got 2 outside the stadium without any problem.

Happened to me for a panthers game. I scalp tickets to every away game all year, and a lot of other nfl games. Charlotte is by far the worst. Never buy paper tickets anywhere. Real tickets or bust.

counterfeit tickets have caught up with looking 100% legitimate. If you don't want to risk it, buy tickets from the original source, in this case I bought mine by going to the ACC website which directed me to Ticket Master. I know you mentioned that one couple bought theirs through TM, but I don't know how that's possible that they bought fake tickets that way. TM guarantees their tickets.

You're correct. That couple said that they would be able to get their money refunded; but they had driven 5 hours, and centered their weekend around seeing the game.

You're asking to be screwed by buying paper tickets.

The problem isn't entirely "fake" tickets. You can reprint tickets online (paper copy) to replace the "real" ticket. The "real" ticket is then void, but people can sell them outside the stadium and no one will know they are not valid.
Also, the new pdf ticket can be printed 100 times and sold outside the stadium. The first person to get to the gate gets in, and the rest are denied. It's pretty hard to get around with no risk.

There are only a few surefire ways...

to guarantee tickets are authentic and that is to either buy tickets directly from the host site, from the competing schools, or through a trusted reliable third party source like StubHub.
A friend of mine paid $700 outside the BOA stadium for six tickets. All six were counterfeit. It's apparently a big problem in Charlotte.

solution?

I know that in Florida a few years back they had a problem with counterfeit tickets being sold outside of the stadium. Their solution was to have a couple of undercover cops with portable ticket scanners working the crowd. Once a couple of the ticket vultures got arrested the word spread and the problem diminished.

Did they keep the tickets at the office? Certainly they can find who purchased the original tix and try to trace it to the scammer.

Sadly these thieves are very good because they looked identical to TicketMaster issued tickets.
It is a problem in the Charlotte area as we later found out this occurs a lot for Panthers game. The event staff didnt care a bit, offered no assistance for him to speak to someone and basically said move on.
Like others he waited in line 30 minutes to forge ahead to be told the tickets were worthless.

The people we met up their, came without tickets and sadly they spent 350 on two bad Tics. The whole time before the game he had a feeling, and watched the guy he bought them from . When he bought the tics he said 3 cops where standing right beside them. So he figured they must be good and they looked just like mine. I bought mine on stub hub.

Clemson FSU 2013

I responded to an ad on Craigslist and purchased 2 lowers for this game. Met the guy before the game, bought 2 actual Clemson issued tickets. Was going to be sitting with the guy I purchased them from as he had 4.
When I went to enter the game the tickets came back as bad. I spoke to a cop who escorted me into the stadium to confront the seller. Here is what happened.
The seller had posted a picture of the 2 tickets (including barcode #) on CL. A third party took the ticket #s, posted and sold them on Stubhub. When we figured this out and went to the Clemson ticket office, we had the original owner of the tickets, myself and the guy who bought the stolen tickets off stubhub.
After the situation was explained to the ticket office, they declared that the stubhub tickets were the valid ones and the tickets issued by the university were no longer valid.
The guy returned my $$$ and said he was going to contact stubhub. The thing that really pissed me off was the University not honoring the real tickets. Still pisses me off to this day.

I'm sorry to hear about your situation, that just plain sucks. We were at the game this weekend and met up with a guy from craigslist who tried to sell us two fakes. We were just skeptical about the situation and asked him a bunch of questions to which he fumbled on and we determined they were fake, at which point he bolted and ran away.
We found two scalpers with two paper tickets outside the stadium and paid $230 a piece for lowers. I told her she could have the money when we get to the gate and she waited in line with us and when we got in, we gave her the money. That's pretty much the only way you can guarantee is to tell the scalper to come to the gate to either check the tickets to make sure they're legit, or wait until you actually get in the stadium to give them the money.
