Gamecock men’s tennis just lost an absolute heartbreaker

May 17, 2021, 7:24 PM

In the sweet 16. They were playing #4 defending national champion Texas.

Final scores ^

SC took the doubles point and then won two singles courts quickly to go up 3-0. They only needed one of the remaining four courts to win and pull the upset to make their first elite 8 since 1989.

Texas responded with two wins. Then South Carolina’s #1 player all year, Daniel Rodrigues, who had been ranked as high as #1 in the nation in singles was up 3-0 in his deciding third set. Plus he blew it and lost the set 4-6, and the Texas finished it off in a 3 setter on court 6.

We may have a terrible men’s tennis program right now, but we still have a more recent elite 8 appearance! 2004 vs 1989 for the gamecocks.

I don't know about you, but I absolutely love hearing about the Gamecocks suffering soul-crushing losses.

Thanks for posting. I wouldn't trade places with anyone in football but there is a ton of sports that are fun to follow. Especially if you have a vested interest. Fortunately football for us lasts 5 months lately but that leaves 7 months of spring sports.

I'd love to see us compete in tennis again on a regular basis. Nothing more exciting than post season play. I hope we add lax. I look at sec and other programs... They have so many sports.

Jmho but football, basketball, and baseball recruits usually play multiple sports. Nothing wrong with them to see trophies from other sports when they visit. Who knows when that tennis player has a younger sibling that's great in x or y sport and come to Clemson. Synergy.

I would definitely love for our tennis program to be where SC’s

Is right now. They’ve put together a few good seasons in a row. But always good to see them lose regardless. Cant have them be getting too successful.
