slot wr

Mar 21, 2022, 10:33 AM

Last year, the lack of having a true shifty slot receiver killed us, especially on third downs.

I know there will never be another Hunter Renfrow. He was the goat. On third down, everyone on and off the field, knew the ball was going to be going his way, and yet time and time again he would make the catch when we needed it.

I think that there are several players who will see playing time as a true slot wr, including Taylor, Williams, Spector, Stellato, and possibly others that I’m not aware of. If Taylor returns from injury, I think that we will see him playing as the starter and getting the most playing time at the position. What are your thoughts on who will be our starting slot receiver this year?

If Will Taylor can be healthy by Summer

I think he has a very good chance of taking over that spot as we simply don't have a lot of talent at the position.

We have talent at the slot position, we just don't have HEALTHY talent. Stelatto and Spector have the ability to be good but seem to like dressing in yellow jerseys for practice. Taylor could very well be the answer as he is a super athlete and quick as a cat.

Antonio Williams may be our best route runner when he

arrives on campus. Wish he could have enrolled in January. I would think Spector will be the starter early on, but expect Williams to quickly move into the top 2 or 3 depending upon Will Taylor's recovery. Stellato can't stay healthy and is missing out on his development.

Williams is going to be great.

I’m not ready to label Stellato as injury prone. Yes, he spent his redshirt season injured, but so did Taylor and others.
If he lives up to his recruiting hype, he will make us proud.

I haven’t given up on Spector . . .

Mar 21, 2022, 10:59 AM

expecting good things from him this season . . . We need a true connection between QB and Receivers . . . There must be a trust factor earned for any WR position to prosper.

Nostalgia has kicked in . . . Before “3rd and Renfrow” I can remember a TE we relied on heavily on third down . . . one Michael Palmer #86 . . .

I can remember Leggett saving quite a few drives...

And Allen, and Ford. The big play from the TEs has been missing for far too long. It seems to have died with Chad Morris’ offensive philosophy and the HUNH. I remember when 90 plays per game was the goal. We held like a 99.9999 win % when hitting 90 plays. Now we’re lucky to hit 80 in a game. Probably averaged around 60 or less last year

I have a feeling WT is gonna be special

Mar 21, 2022, 4:29 PM

special. Think he gets the start unless Collins just comes out like a beast.

He certainly looked great in the small sample size we got to

Mar 21, 2022, 6:25 PM

see before he was injured. More slippery than hot syrup!

Short area quickness, heard this descriptive analogy more than once "the best slot can operate in a phone booth. Naturally gifted hands probably equally important, so I'm going with the white boy too, Taylor. Belichick agrees.

Man, folks have short memories. Slot receiver has been a strength at Clemson for as long as Dabo's been here, it's always been the "secret sauce" in our offenses because we've always, always had the ability to move the chains whenever we wanted it.

The first guy under Dabo was Curtis Baham, who we literally called "Mr. Third Down", because he was, well, pretty much uncoverable on third downs. Baham was followed by now-WR's coach Tyler Grisham, who also got to the NFL...as a slot guy. He in turn was followed by a guy who's now about to enter his 8th year in the NFL and signed a 4-year, $36-million deal with the Titans before 2019...I have no idea how much of that he was actually paid because the Titans released him to save cap space in February last year and he got picked up by Washington...whatever, he's doing really well for himself.

Renfrow in turn was followed by Amari Rodgers, too, who got drafted in the second round by the Packers two years ago...and was fifth in school history in receptions.

We've had some slots, easily the best in college football during Dabo's tenure here. We will again. Spector, before COVID, surely looked like the next guy up. Last year for whatever reason we just didn't have that guy and it really showed.

Could see us putting Shipley there on occasion….

With Pace/Mafah at RB….
Mixing that in with the other receivers mentioned could be dangerous, I would think.
