TTT reporting back from Hilton Head, Sea Pines edition...

Spent a week there, first time back since 2019. Kinda sad to see most of the mom and pop stores gone or closed, thanks COVID.
The OHIO invasion continues, it's crazy now. And Michiganders seem to be following now.
Speaking of OHIO, nary a good lookin one in the bunch. Most are THICK in all the wrong places.
Still enjoyed biking, seeing gators, and some good restaurants.
6/10, might do next year. Maybe 30A

That's about it. Maybe Pawleys? Not much beach left that hasn't been taken by the northerners. Maybe Litchfield or Debby Do?

All of that has been lost to the invasion as well.

There's a strip of beach on the very end of the out side of Murrell's inlet that you can still drink a beer and sit a in a chair, and a little bit of sandbar outside Sullivan's that's only reachable by boat on low tide.
But the rest of it has been bored, reamed, honed and cultivated to resemble the exact same strip of Jersey Shore they left.

Anyway, we wanted to take a high cotton vacation and booked the Sanctuary at Kiawah. Great place. Very nice hotel. Service was at one time awesome. BUT, all the staff talked with a gullah accent, as if they were locals who were 90 years old, but they were young. But dad immediately noted (took me longer) the accent wasn't gullah at all (plus the ages didn't match up....too young to have that much of a gullah accent). After he pointed it out, I realized he was correct. So dad started doing what he does, asking them where they're from. EVERY SINGLE PERSON with the "gullah" accent, was from Jamaica.
Now, what are the odds that half the staff in a single hotel/resort would be from Jamaica. There isn't a huge Jamaican community in SC. One dude finally told dad they were hired because of their accent. The Caribbean Jamaican accent sounds very much like the watered down gullah accent you only see today among older locals in rural parts of Charleston and Beaufort counties. It was a very specific ruse by the resort to make guests think they were local and spoke with a gullah accent.
Racist? I dunno. Fooled many a northerner I'm sure.

Many high-end resorts bring in Jamaicans

Because local help is often not polite, nor trainable, and often call in sick. All the resorts in N. Michigan do, the Jamaicans love it up there, getting away from the heat for a change.

I worked there for a while in the Ocean Room
There are many international workings beyond Jamaica, heck the GM was Vijay Singh (not that one)
There’s an apt complex in West Ashley where a lot of the staff live. I drove some people home one day
It was never mentioned as a way to dupe the guests. It was more something along the lines of actual migrant workers. They’d make more money in the states for 6 months than they would at home. Rinse and repeat
High cotton vacations are a cultural experience. Wait til you see the diversity at Disney

except most of them didn't come over willingly.
When I was younger everyone had that accent; now everyone sounds like they are from Illinois. I remember going to a fishing club meetings with my dad when I was about 10 down at the old cigar factory downtown. All of those dudes sound like they just stepped off Daufuskie. Lulz..that when there was an actual boat landing at the city marina right next to Salty Mikes / Variety store.

(St. George, SC maybe) had the craziest accent ever. I don't remember where Amin was originally from, but it was Caribbean. Hardcore jamaican-esque accent. Funny guy, weird roommate to have though.

Not really. Mostly a family beach though gated. Not nearly as upscale as Kiawah, Wild Dunes and other areas, but not trashy either.
