When committing suicide, who do so many people hang themselves?

Feb 13, 2020, 9:37 AM

That's got to be one of the most god-awful and painful ways to go. Because when people do it to themselves, they basically just slowly strangle to death. That's not quick... it takes a few minutes. You're thrashing about in total agony as you slowly choke and asphyxiate.

Back in the day, outlaws would request a "good hangman" for their execution. It was a skill to do it right. The amount of drop, based on the body weight... too little and it doesn't break the neck (instant death)... too much and the head could actually pop off (which makes a mess LOL). Even the placement of the noose had to be just right, right behind the ear, to ensure a sideways snap of the neck. But none of that happens when you just throw a rope over a rafter and kick the chair over.

Anyway, I just can't imagine choosing to go out that way. A bullet to the head, a drug overdose, whatever. Just about anything but hanging.

edit: Almost forgot, have a great day!

Less gory than a gunshot. More certain than pills. Less scary than jumping off a bridge.

I almost committed suicide by accident once when I wore a Clemson jersey to a VT home game and sat in the student section.

It's understandable.

I kind of have the urge to kill any adult I see wearing a football jersey, too.

Drinking too much and wasn't taking meds. He was in that downward spiral that could only end one way. Hindsight is 20/20. I didn't see it then or would have done everything I could to stop him. Granny discovered him in their garage after coming back from a sister's weekend. Too sad.

Feb 13, 2020, 9:57 AM

have many options there. You can't get a gun, you can't jump out the window of a tall building, etc. But other than prison, I just can't understand it. Sorry for the morbid topic, but I've wondered about this for years. And I just read an article this morning about a NJ stockbroker who hanged himself.

A guy I knew for years did it. Went to school with him from 1st grade on... Skipper Durham. Not positive, but I'd say we were about 35 when he did it. Divorce, drugs, financial problems, the usual. But he hanged himself from a freaking bed post, one of those rice beds or poster beds or whatever you call it. Good lord... Skipper had to be 6 feet tall... his toes had to be practically touching the floor. I mean, you really have to want to die...

I hadn't seen him in many years, heard about it at a HS reunion. But it still blows my mind.

Feb 13, 2020, 11:02 AM [ in reply to ...Do you need somebody to talk to?*** ]

for me, he'll have to drag me out kickin and screamin, while I try to kick him in the nuts.

I went through a bad period of depression, when my life fell apart about 10 years ago. I may have posted a little bit about it back then. Wife of almost 30 years basically went stone cold fucknuts crazy. Literally a perfect wife and mother for 25 of those years. Something happened, not sure what, but she just totally lost her chit. Started with physical problems. They were real, she was really suffering. Went to a gazillion doctors. Then she hooked up with a psychiatrist who was basically just a "###### writer". Had her on about a dozen different drugs. Then she really went downhill... her whole personality changed. When I looked her in the eye, I didn't even recognize the person looking back at me.

She got totally paranoid. And violent. Got her CWP and carried a gun everywhere she went. Started to supplement her prescribed drugs with some off the street. Was getting arrested on almost a weekly basis... DUI's, resisting arrest, drug possession/intent to distribute, disorderly conduct, you name it. She slept all day and was up all night. I had to move into an extended stay hotel just to try to get some sleep and keep my job. And to basically hide from her. No joke, I was scared...

When I had her served with divorce papers, I literally dropped out of sight for a few months. Had to quit my job and stayed on the move. I'd stay in a hotel in Charlotte for a week, go to Atlanta for a week, etc. And it's a good thing I did... the private investigator still had a tracking device on her car. She would spend all night driving around, looking for me. Cruising through the parking lots of hotels, checking the houses of friends and family, looking for my car. I think she'd have killed me if she found me.

Anyway, I went through total he1l for about 5 or 6 years until I managed to get her out of my life. And lost half of everything in the divorce of course... 401K's, equity in the house, savings accounts, other investments, etc. It's a helluva thing to have that happen when in your late 50's. I've accepted the fact that I'll probably never be able to "retire" and will have to work until I die. But at least I have a life.

And the above is just the tip of the iceberg. If I told you the whole story, I'd still be typing this time tomorrow. You probably wouldn't even believe some of it. Bottom line - if I didn't kill myself back then, I never will. (LOL) Not afraid of dying and going to hel1... been there, done that, and have the T-shirt.

I presume you are not eager to marry again. My uncles third wife actually shot him, and she still cuts his hair to this day. Not only that, he’s on wife #5 now. I’ve met the woman at least 15 times and she still has no idea who I am.

Re: how’d you finally get away from her?

Feb 13, 2020, 1:00 PM

Oh my gawd. That's a long story as well. I just typed about 5 paragraphs and then deleted em. Bottom line: I stayed "under cover" and just showed up for the required court appearances. At a preliminary hearing, the judge kicked her out of the house and I got it. But I was afraid to move back in, she'd know where I was. I just changed the locks and stayed hidden. After the divorce was final, she went downhill even worse. More arrests, etc. She bought a house, and then it "mysteriously" burned down about 6 weeks later. She already had quite a few charges pending that her lawyer had managed to get postponed. But arson and insurance fraud is a different animal....

She was facing some serious prison time. So she dropped out of sight. Just disappeared. We all figured they'd catch her in a couple weeks or months... you can only run so long with no source of income. You know, she's living in a camper in a state park in Utah, whatever. Nope, she's never been heard from again. It's been about 5 years now. She just dropped off the planet. SLED interrogated everybody for a year or so, they thought we knew something or somebody was hiding her or helping her evade. All of her family & friends had "drop bys" in which they'd quiz you and "take a quick look around". But nobody has heard a peep. Nobody.

Her car has never been found. The money she had in the bank has never been withdrawn. Nothing. She is just a Missing Person. We all figure she has to be dead. Even if she lucked up and found some rich guy willing to take her to South America and hide... she'd still want to know about her mom, her brothers, her son. Somehow, someway she'd reach out to them. But she hasn't. Every time there's something in the news about a "body found" we all wonder until it's identified. Maybe someday they'll find a car in a lake or shallow grave in the woods, who knows. They've taken a DNA sample from my son for those purposes.

So. How'd I get away? She disappeared.

Re: Shouldn't your son have access to that money after an amount

Feb 13, 2020, 9:14 PM

Yes, you'd think so. Yet another long story. Her oldest brother gets the statements every month of the money in her account. I don't know how or why. After she was missing for a couple years and everybody figured out she wasn't just "successfully on the the run" they finally filed a Missing Persons Report. Then, several months ago, I was told they rescinded it... that it was better to have the outstanding warrants do the job, rather than a Missing Persons thing. That it carried more weight or whatever. I don't know.

But yes, I've wondered if that didn't start the clock ticking all over again. I think somebody has to be "missing" for 7 years for them to be declared dead and their estate handled. I should probably look into it, but I just haven't. I've run out of steam. I'm worn the F out.

Feb 13, 2020, 10:17 AM

in less than 30 seconds. You feel the lack of oxygen even with a lung filled with air. A good stiff heart attack does about the same thing. Actually, when you overcome the panic it's kinda easy. Just close your eyes and go to sleep.

Re: The loss of blood flow to the brain puts you out...

Feb 13, 2020, 11:22 AM

It depends. A wire or something similar may be efficient at cutting off the supply of oxygen to the brain. But a lot of folks just go to the closet and get a belt. That won't do the trick, it'll probably take about 5 minutes before you lose consciousness.

True Story

Feb 13, 2020, 11:19 AM

I met a girl at a bar in Raleigh one night. We started dating. Her parents were SUPER rich and it was fun. They had a gigantic place with two pools and mom had a Maserati we would drive, etc etc.

Anyway, her dad was tied up in a scheme with a funeral home owner. They both were trafficing black grils and would make the strip, even had a stripper pole in the top of the funeral home, have sex with them, etc. The funeral home dude got busted first, but it didnt take long for him to squeal. The girls dad had 3 homes that they housed the girls in and he was putting braces on them, buying them hair weaves, all kinds of things to have them look the best. Once he was outed, he sprang loose and no one could find him. The Sheriff's office even called and came to my house to ask me questions. No one could find him.

So one day, the Sheriff's office got smart and went to their lake cabin up at Lake Gaston. He was there, but dead. He hung himself and had been there for 5 days!! They said the smell was god awful and crazy enough, he was still hung up there in the rafters.

Lots more to the story as he had maxed out credit cards, took out loans against his 401k's, forged his wife's signature to take loans out on the house, the list goes on and on.

If it's not one problem, it's another. They came out and ran the line like 8 weeks after I paid $800 for it. "Oh, we can't put a meter on it until the county comes out and tags it". Call the county, "oh, we can't do that until someone else comes out to pressure test"...Call the pressure test guy, "Oh, I won't do that until they've got the meter"....On and on and on. Honestly I would have just said #### having gas logs and not worried about it had I known it was going to be this big of a PITA.
