Clemson gets screwed @ UAB in 1993 NIT

Clemson should play UAB in the 2nd round of this year's NIT. After reading the attached article about the 1993 NIT game, I think that you would agree that Clemson should even the score by trouncing UAB.

OK... I give up. What file format should I attach that will be clear and not be as big? When I open this 1589 KB file out of my documents folder, it is clear as a bell. I noticed that it is just under 300 KB when attached to my post.

Staff WriterHerald-Journal

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The potential winning points were on the scoreboard. Then they were wiped away. Soon, Clemson's dream of a trip to New York was too.

In a game marred by a controversial ending, Alabama-Birmingham defeated the Tigers 65-64 Monday night in a National Invitation Tournament second-round game at UAB Arena.

The Tigers appeared to have taken a 66-65 lead with three seconds left on a shot inside by center Sharone Wright. But an official blew an inadvertent whistle. With the crowd making a great deal of noise, the official said he thought he heard the shot clock buzzer go off. A five-minute conference at the scoring table ensued, and Clemson's two points were taken away. The Tigers then were given the ball under the UAB basket with six seconds left in the game and three on the shot clock. After two timeouts by Clemson and one by UAB, guard Chris Whitney threw the ball into forward Wayne Buckingham, who misfired from five feet. A tip by Wright went in and out before the buzzer sounded. As UAB players and fans stormed the court, all Clemson's players could think of was the basket that wasn't. "You can't put two points on the scoreboard and just take them off," Buckingham said. "You just can't do that. This officiating was the worst I've ever seen." The scene after the game also was confusing. UAB head coach Gene Bartow said he thought a whistle was blown because Wright traveled. "I don't think the shot clock went off, but I think the films will show that he traveled," Bartow said. After the call, Bartow and Clemson head coach Cliff Ellis gathered for a conference with Curtis Shaw, chief of the Ohio Valley Conference officiating crew. "I don't want to make a big deal out of this, but I was very disappointed in some of things I saw tonight," Ellis said. "The officials said they weren't going to change the call, and there was nothing I could do about it. I had to worry about setting a play up for our team." According to a statement issued by Shaw, the whistle was blown inadvertently with six seconds left "because of a perceived shot clock malfunction." However, a violation could not have occurred at that time because there was a three-second differential between the game and shot clock. That's why the officials gave the ball back to the Tigers. UAB guard Stanley Jackson said he heard a whistle and, like Bartow, he said he thought it was for traveling. However, Wright and several other Clemson players said they did not hear it. "There was no whistle," Wright said. "Their players never quit on the play." After Wright's last-ditch tip failed, UAB center Willie Chapman rebounded. Clemson guard Andre Bovain said he saw one official call Chapman for traveling, while the other two waved it off. According to Shaw's statement, the officials had a count on the final six seconds "because of a concern for noise." There was a clock malfunction, and the game was declared over when the count expired. Clemson's season ends at 17-13, while the Blazers (19-13) move on to play Southwest Missouri State, with the winner advancing to New York for the NIT semifinals and final. For most of the second half, it looked like the Tigers were bound for the Big Apple. They led 43-31 with 14:05 left and were up 50-40 with less than 10 minutes left. But with the crowd of 7,879 spurring the Blazers on, they went on a 12-2 run to tie the score at 52-52. The Tigers were handicapped when Wright had to go to the locker room for two minutes with a hamstring injury. He had a slight limp for the remainder of the game. Clemson led 64-60 with 1:31 left when forward Robert Shannon hit two free throws with 1:31 left. With 51 seconds left, Shannon nailed a 3-pointer for a 65-64 UAB lead, setting the stage for Clemson to play for the last shot. "We owe this one to Robert Shannon," Jackson said. "He totally carried us in the second half, while I carried us int the first." Shannon made 5 of 7 shots in the second half, scoring 15 of his game-high 19 points. Jackson had 12 of his 17 in the first half. Wright led the Tigers with 18 points and 15 rebounds, but he shot just 6 of 17. Clemson's other top two scorers, Chris Whitney and Devin Gray shot a combined 6 of 21 as the Tigers managed just 37 percent shooting. "Our kids played hard, but they didn't play well in the first half," said Ellis, whose Tigers shot just 32 percent in the first half and trailed 27-26. "Our shot selection needed to be better." The Tigers began the second half with a 14-3 run. They were spurred on by six straight points that resulted after Bartow was assessed a technical for screaming at the referees. But in the end it was Ellis and the Tigers who were doing all the fuming.

I was at the game too. Had driven over from Atlanta. Could have spit bullets the whole drive home.

UAB fans were real jerks too after the game.

I remember Jim Phillips on the radio saying in no uncertain terms that we got screwed. He used some arcane term for "screwed" that I can't recall that was an insult to UAB and the refs . I found it humorous in spite of the situation. He kept his composure but you could tell he was hot. RIP Jim.

Clemson got screwed against Cal in 1999 NIT final

Mar 14, 2023, 11:12 PM

In the closing seconds of the game, Clemson's big man Tom Wideman took a charge which was called a foul against Tom Wideman, who was clearly set.

I was standing right next to the actual basket when this occurred

I was there when this happened. I was with the Clemson Cheerleaders. Incredible screw job.
As I recall, I’m standing facing the basketball goal and Chris Whitney is driving to his left/my right towards the basket and he passes off to Wright who makes the game winning score. The Ref does blow the whistle but it’s as the uncontested basket is made, kind of like bam bam (whistle basket). I went off!!! I thought I was gonna get the cheerleaders thrown out.
In my opinion, it was an NIT money issue. UAB was excited to be hosting a game and the place was packed. If Clemson wins that game, the next game would’ve been played at Littlejohn with our student body on spring break. I think they were calling the game with having the next one at UAB instead of Clemson.
