We should have gotten out of the ACC when we told USC we

May 10, 2012, 9:47 PM

were with them. We broke our word and now its coming back to bite. No one to thank but our BOTs for this. This is what happens when you have 'lifetime' BOTs which is in direct violation of the SC Constitution.

ARTICLE VI.

OFFICERS

SECTION 1. Eligibility for office; terms.
No person may be elected or appointed to office in this State for life or during good behavior, but the terms of all officers must be for some specified period except officers in the militia. (1972 (57) 3181; 1973 (58) 83; 1997 Act No. 3.)

Not sure

May 10, 2012, 10:07 PM

anyone would admit to that now.

I know Bob Fulton use to talk about it some - and it may be in one of his books.

Re: Not sure

Its been a long time coot lie. I personally heard Coach Howard say that he NEVER promised usuck AD Clemson would leave the Atlantic Coast Conference---that although they discussed it, he didn't have the authority to do so. That move would have had to be approved by the president and the Board of Trustees.

well, I doubt

May 17, 2012, 10:00 PM

USC was leaving based on Frank Howard's word or statement.

I think USC's position was that Clemson had given then indications that they would go with USC. (I've never heard anyone suggest Frank Howard was the one that said he'd go - and USC believed that0.

Oh please, we won like 8 conference championships since then

and beat ND, OU, Penn State, FSU, & Miami when they were all good or had legendary coaches.

Did you forget about the national championship too?

Ignorant on so many levels....

May 10, 2012, 10:34 PM

USC wandered in the wilderness for thirty years after leaving the ACC.... Football as an independent and other sports in the Metro set USC athletics back for decades. Even the first 5 years or so in the SEC looked like a disaster for them. Yes, being in the SEC is paying dividends for them NOW ... But nobody would knowingly trade more than three decades in the wilderness for what they have now.

And for the millionth time, Clemson's "life trustees" don't actually serve for life. It is a misnomer. A portion of the board is self-sustaining. The self-sustaining trustees can and do remove fellow self-sustaining trustees. Many universities have boards elected from outside, many universities have self-sustaining boards. Clemson is unusual because it is a hybrid. The hybrid board was a condition for existing - no hybrid board, no Clemson.

You are always confusing people with the facts. Shame on

And let's not forget what level SC is at right now...

May 17, 2012, 10:17 PM [ in reply to Ignorant on so many levels.... ]

They won the East in 2010 when the entire division collapsed around them. And I mean every one of them. Florida; UT; UGA; Ky; Vandy. They all ducked that year. That division completely fell apart, and SC wound up the year as probably the worst East Division champ ever, losing to Kentucky, getting defeated by 39 points in the SEC title game, losing their bowl to an ACC school, and ending up 9-5.

Then, 2011. OK, they went 11-2. But seriously, look what happened to them when the chips were down. The worst Auburn defense I've ever seen allowed them 13 points. And when the whole ball of wax was on the line, they gave up 44 points and were crushed by Arkansas. They didn't win their division. They didn't win the SEC. And that might be one of their best ever teams.

They're a good team. But not a great team. And when UF, UT or UGA finally get their act together, we all know what's going to happen to SC.

So, you guys have lost to them 3 years in a row. Well, stuff happens. It won't be like this forever. Everyone knows that Clemson is the football power in this state.

3 losses to a rival that you've dominated won't change that.

Clemson's will and/or charter supercedes SC law.***

It may supersede newer statutes, but it can't supersede the

state constitution. That said, the framework for Clemson's governing Board of Trustees doesn't violate the constitution. There are no "life trustees." The term is inaccurate shorthand for the portion of the board that is self-sustaining.
