So replacing my other air conditioner/furnace

May 16, 2023, 2:10 PM

Looks like all hvac techs are pushing heat pumps to replace the furnace.
Thanks Biden.

My question is, anyone have a heat pump? how is it with cooling in the hot summer?

I'm not an HVAC technician, but I wouldn't pump

heat into the house if I was trying to cool it.

Heat pumps are fine for the summer. Your old gas/heat pump

combo unit used a heat pump in the summer. AC's work as heat pumps, no matter of you have electric or gas heat. Now the heat from a heat pump sucks. It's decent in SC, but in colder states it sucks, and is less used. Heat pumps work fine down to about 40 degrees, but below that they become inefficient at exchanging the air to keep the house warm. When that happens, usually on nights in the 20's, the heat will "run on coils", which is expensive and inefficient.

Gas heat is much better heat. AC makes no difference.

We have a heat pump AC/gas combo unit for the downstairs in our house. Upstairs we have a heat pump, all electric heat/AC. The builder did this because the added heat from the gas unit rising from downstairs means the upstairs heat pump rarely uses coils/strips in winter, meaning more efficient. Gas would have been overkill for the upstairs in other words, with gas heat downstairs rising. If you have a 2 floor house with split systems, a gas/heat pump combo unit for downstairs and a fully electric heat pump upstairs is generally the most efficient solution.

Traditional heat pumps work until 45°F ambient

Then they switch over to electric heat. At that point, your electric bill skyrockets.

If you go heat pump, you'll want to make sure it has a low ambient kit on it to use heat pump mode down to 17°F. It will still energize the electric heat, but only when it's defrosting the coil outside.

All that to say use a furnace. It's eleventy times better than a heat pump. Especially if you already have gas heat.

Cooling is fine…and we got a lot of hot humid days on

the gulf coast. Heat, however, it falls behind if it gets around freezing outside. We don’t have too many of those days down here, so it’s not really a bother.

In Short Pump you'll spend a bundle on electric heat with a

heat pump. They're not very efficient there in the winter.

Hook up NG before Joe personally comes to you house and rips it out.
