Cool Tiger marching band factoids

Oct 9, 2013, 11:21 PM

-In 1965, hosted an annual Band Day which drew some 1,500 collegiate and high school musicians who performed at half time.

-In 1962, under director John H. Butler, while in Washington D.C. the band played the Clemson alma mater for President Kennedy.

-On Sunday November 15, 1964 a 100 piece Tiger Marching Band performed at half time for the Baltimore Colts vs. Minnesota Vikings game which was also televised on CBS.

I bring this up because I enjoy our band but have recently heard of Virginia Tech playing Tennessee in Bristol Motor Speedway. Quite some time ago a friend passed along this gem so I thought I'd pass it along. Note: this hasn't, as far as I know, been confirmed but is widely accepted.

-The Clemson Marching Band was the first to play at a Nascar race; and did so at Atlanta Motor Speedway.

If you can confirm this let me know. I believe it to be as per the source. Unfortunately, he is no longer with us for me to ask where he got it from.

The Nascar story is true. I was in Tiger Band when we marched on the track at Atlanta Motor Speedway for the Hooters 500. Great memories!

I'm glad you say that because

the memoir does say it was the Hooters500. Cool.

When I attended my first home game as a student in 1965,

and Tiger Band entered the field, I clearly remember thinking, "Boy, this is the 'Big Time!'"

I was fortunate during my four years at CU to have known many members of the band and even enjoyed watching some of their practices. I tried to thank as many members as I could for their efforts.

Tiger Band may not have the numbers nor the glitz that some others do. We may not have a music major, thereby making participation completely voluntary.

However, for 49 seasons I have believed that we have one of the greatest ensembles of talent, all of whom are fiercely loyal and dedicated. If they did nothing more than play Tiger Rag a hundred times during our games, I'd still be on my feet, clapping and cheering.

They're OUR band...OUR students, OUR fellow Clemson brethren. And I've been d@mn proud of them for nearly 50 years!

Can't wait

My son is in 9th grade and is a 3 year veteran of the Powdersville High Marching band (trumpet). He already has his Tiger Rag sheet music. People have NO idea how hard these kids work, nor how much effort goes into all they (and the parents) do. I always enjoyed being awakened on Saturday mornings when the Tiger band was practicing early on the intramural field. Can't wait until my son gets to form the ###### Tigers on the field!!

I can confirm the NASCAR story

Tiger Band in 1993 marched at the Hooters 500; I was there. We were the first college marching band ever to do it, I specifically remember the band directors telling us that. That sounds like a great entry into the history record books, but unfortunately the trip was an unmitigated disaster.

We had to be on the busses at 6am for the trip to Atlanta. Despite that, someone wasn't planning very well and we got caught in some abysmal pre-race traffic. As a result we were something like 90 minutes to 2 hours late to the track. The original plan was to enter at one side of the grandstand, march across, play the national anthem, and then leave via the other side of the grandstand. We were so late that we had to scrap that and we ended up coming in on the wrong side of the grandstant and marching the full length of the track (never marched on a banked curve before...that was interesting). All we had prepared to play from memory was Tiger Rag (and the national anthem, but you can only play that once and not while marching) so we'd play that every few minutes, then do a drum cadence, repeat. The crowd was obviously not there to see a Clemson band performance and 95% of them probably couldn't have cared less about Tiger Band, so we pretty much played to silence. It was REALLY awkward. I've played to cheers and jeers, but to play to apathy is the worst.

We finally got off the track; some of us stayed for the race as we were offered complimentary tickets, some of us got right back in the buses and headed home. It was a miserable, miserable trip. And even worse for me (and about 30 other fellow band members) because I was doing it on literally no sleep...I'd been up all night for a fraternity event.

I'm pretty sure no college marching band has played at a NASCAR event since, and with good reason. We did it back in the day when Mr. Brooks said "jump" and Tiger Band said "Yes sir, how high?". Usually we had a lot of fun "jumping"...for example just a few years earlier we had dressed as extras for a Hooters commercial. So when he told us to come march at the race, the band directors didn't even blink.
