ACC Survival

Jul 1, 2022, 10:09 AM

Since Clemson seems to be either sticking with the ACC till the bitter end or unwanted by other conferences (would be surprising) I’m curious to know what everyone’s thoughts are on the options for the ACC surviving. I know football is driving all this, but the conference is more than just football and won as many national titles as anyone during the academic year.

The only option I see is to steal what’s left of the best Big12 teams and form some sort of east/west super conference with the PAC12. But, even if that did happen I don’t see that preventing the SEC or BIG from taking whatever teams they want.

way to save the conference would be to build a time machine, go back to early 1948 and give Jack Swofford a condom!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It won't. It has been too lazy. Clemson needs to find a way

Agree with you, but Clemson doesn’t seem to be interested or able to find a taker. Hoping I’m 100% wrong there, but if not the ACC needs to do something creative NOW to balance things out.

At best the ACC could add the likes of WVU and Navy

Jul 1, 2022, 10:17 AM

Big 12/Pac 12 will merge, leaving the ACC with really no options at all. WVU might even stay put if the $$$ is better in the Big/Pac 12.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Agree. If Big 12 is going to merge, it will be with PAC***

Adding marginal teams will not move the needle. It would actually reduce the per team payout as ESPN would not pay more for adding these teams so current revenue would be divided by a larger number of teams. ND would be the only hail Mary play and i doubt they would want to basically sign up for half the annual payout of the BIG

I don’t think adding weak teams leftover in the Midwest helps. Yes, you have more teams, but also have to split the revenue even more ways.

Matchups matter more to me than having a million teams in your conference. Heck, I would love jettison Pitt, Cuse and BC and just keep our traditional ACC rivals.

I know I’m in the minority, but I prefer contraction versus expansion. Easy travel to away games for fans. Less travel for our student athletes, especially those mid week Olympic sports matchups. Playing teams we have a deep history with.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Contraction would be an interesting approach. Quality over Quantity. Do the opposite!

Keep: Clemson, UVA, VT, UNC, NCSU, GT, FSU, MIAMI.

Agree and that’s why I think it wouldn’t really prevent any further poaching but it’s the only option I see. If that were to happen, I would think most of the higher level Big12 schools would end up in the PAC12 side except maybe one or two with the ACC group and from there they form some sort of conference with two distinct sides - east and west.

Big new TV conference is going to be somewhere 60-100 mil per team. They will set the standard .Clemson needs to get out now. Time to be proactive not reactive.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

In order to survive, the ACC needs to grow or it is going to

Jul 1, 2022, 10:58 AM

become a second tier conference. The problem with growing the ACC is that outside of Notre Dame there is no other big name school in our region of the USA that can add to the plus side of the revenue equation for the ACC. Between the SEC and the Big 10 the pickings are slim for ACC growth unless we totally go crazy and try to entice a left coast team to join (i.e. Oregon, Washington, Stanford etc...) which I just don't see happening.

Something not often discussed is that the more teams added to the conference, the more the revenue is split. So any team that is added to the ACC must increase the conference revenue by at least equal or more than what every current ACC team is currently receiving or the expansion will actually hurt the member schools. Notre Dame is enough of a brand to increase the overall revenue to the point of being a plus but who else?

Unfortunately the SEC and Big 10 have essentially put us in a box and unless we can entice one of their member schools to bale for the ACC (highly unlikely) things are not looking good for ACC expansion.

Let's ink Notre Dame and get OK State in the door... ASAP***

Re: ACC Survival

Jul 1, 2022, 11:07 AM

The ACC won’t survive as a major conference. Adding a couple or even 4 peon teams won’t make a difference, as compared to the Big 10 or SEC. We’ll need to leave along with several other teams (Miami, FSU, etc.)
The successful path is either one way or another, but bottom line - out of the ACC.
Thankful we have Neff to get us somewhere other than here. If Washington and Oregon bolt to the Big 10 (which they probably will, Clemson, Miami, FSU and another (maybe even UNC) need to jump to the SEC.

All this happens because of USC and UCLA? I kind of see the USC thing, I mean they did have OJ. But UCLA are they that big of a deal? Am I really turning through channels and go oh wow, UCLA is playing now. Better stop and watch. And I get that Southern California has a lot of people. But are they really die hard college football fans that watch a bunch of college football instead of going to the beach on a Saturday? And now they're going to send their kids 2-3 time zones away to play half their games.

This is just nuts, but that's what money does.

Yeah, on that topic the BIG move makes no sense to me. One reason, as you stated, UCLA?! The other is, unless they plan to bridge the gap from SoCal to the BIG with other PAC12 teams you have those two floating out on an island. It may not impact football but it sure will other sports.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Its not only them, its also OU/ TX to the SEC

Jul 1, 2022, 11:35 AM [ in reply to Re: ACC Survival ]

There are now 2 power conferences and the ACC does not have a counter move.

Jul 1, 2022, 11:37 AM [ in reply to Re: ACC Survival ]

Were the ACC to expand I would understand 16 total schools. Notre Dame is obvious if they will do it and for the 16th team I would go for Central Florida.

whatever direction the ACC elects to go they #### sure better act now, like today!
The universities of Oregon and Washington both high quality programs TODAY applied to join the Big 12.
The pool of attractive, ie TV attractive, contenders is growing smaller.
Musical teams is underway and nobody wants to miss a seat.

It’s a parallel battle, conferences along with the media covering; ESPN and the SEC vs Fox Sports and the Big 10. We have the ACC Network - ‘nuff said.

Re: ACC Survival

Jul 1, 2022, 12:41 PM

Yes, we do. Merge with the Pac 12(10).

It would give the new league the largest footprint in the country.

It adds very big TV markets like Phoenix, Seattle, San Francisco, and Denver.

It creates some very interesting basketball rivalries.

Yeah, it adds travel expenses but the revenue will make up for it.

Otherwise, Clemson and a few other ACC schools will be begging for entry into the SEC or BIG, and the ACCight end up as a basketball league like the Big East.
