Constructive Criticism or Poor Journalism

Oct 23, 2021, 12:01 PM

I have noticed for a long time that many articles that supposedly offer constructive criticism or speculation about athletic teams, athletes. and coaches have spelling and grammatical errors. It is often lazy writers and editors that do not pick up the "autocorrect" insertions e.g. "way" for "weigh" or similar things. I'm not talking about the average Tnet poster that makes a typo e.g. "won" for "win" talking about a future game, after all the "o" and "i" are next to each other on the keyboard. I am talking about the professionals on the sites (yes even David Hood and Tiger Net let some slip through). What would happen if Dabo was loaded with a bunch of these errors and when dumb questions were asked he replied " Well _____ it is like your article where you misspelled (insert the word) or used (insert grammatical error). Why should we take you seriously, when you can't get the fundamentals of your profession done." I'll bet there reply would amount to well I'm not getting paid $9 million a year.

Just saying it would be interesting. I have proof read this, but if there are errors I plead the average Tnetter poster defense.

I can't imagine Dabo correcting grammar. Not his style.

Should be, “What would happen if Dabo WERE loaded…”

With speed to publish, those things such as proofing and following style guides, etc are a thing of the past for the mom and pop shops (or dudes in basement) - especially for quick hit pieces.

I’m a paying member just so we can get some original content from Hood as the posting of Finebaum tweets doesn’t do much for me. If Hood has a grammatical error because he is typing with a child in his lap in ok with it.

Now when it comes to the occasional long form journalism that is published, I agree that that #### needs to be proofed and well written/edited.
