The transfer portal is killing college sports

Need to sit out a year. How are you suppose to do roster management if your worried a guy will leave because you got upset at him?

And I have the exact opposite opinion. I think it’s good for the players and college football will be just fine. It’s change and I think it’s good not bad. If a player thinks he can start at team b and accomplish his life goals, he shouldn’t have to sit on team a’s bench.

Here in lies the problem with the “real” world. Multimillionaire Coaches will sell their school with lies and mislead the young naive teenage athletes because their salary and livelihood depends on it. I’m not saying this happens everywhere but it does happen a lot. The transfer portal invites unethical predators to prey on these kids.

It would be fascinating to research. Take men’s basketball...

Apr 12, 2021, 12:26 PM [ in reply to Re: The transfer portal is killing college sports ]

Someone mentioned in a previous post that nearly a quarter of all D1 men’s basketball players are in the portal. So that ridiculous stat gives one a whole lot of data to track.

How many of these players make it to the NBA? How does that number compare to players who stay?

Then more critically, how successful are the ones that transferred in a profession other than basketball...which is where most of them end up. Transferring (by and large, but not always) indicates that sports is their primary focus. Switching curriculums...switching cultures...adding the stress of learnings a New team and program with all new academic environment...new town...losing the network of one school’s alumni without really creating a new network at the new school. It would be interesting to see if the right to transfer really helps these kids...all while (this is just my opinion), further distancing the non-diehard-fans from the sport, which becomes far less a “Make your school proud” feel and much more of an “Optimize your personal brand marketability and NIL revenue stream by being a basketball mercenary” feel. Again...good for them (maybe?) but it’s no fun anymore.

Personally, I did not watch a second of the Tournament this year, including Clemson. It’s just not interesting. And I never thought I would say that ten/fifteen years ago.

I agree. Whoever made that decision used poor judgement and I'm afraid they are too proud to admit it and change it.

It may not be killing college sports, but it is certainly not making it any better (except for those few that think they can do better somewhere else).

Consequences will be complex and not fully understood...

for several years.

IMO Negative impacts may outweigh positive impacts, but too early to tell.

Get off my lawn!! #GrumpyOldMan

Unfortunately coaches and the sports have done it to themselves. They've allowed the coaching staffs to make big money and switch whenever they've wanted and leave kids penniless, high and dry.

And a lot of these kids don't have the same affinity for their University that alums like us have. They want to play. They want to compete. They want to be successful. So who are we to say it HAS to be at a university you decided on when you were 17 and no one who recruited you is there anymore at 19 and plays a different scheme that you were recruited for?

Of course you're going to get some unhappy kids, but do you want a unhappy kid playing for your team or dropping out forever over a stupid rule like this?

Sports is supposed to be fun. Stop making it about yourselves. Maybe you don't agree with their decisions but it isn't ruining anything. All it's ruining is your perception of how things should be. Get over yourselves
