Consensus #1 High School recruits that never panned out.

[2]
Jun 24, 2021, 6:09 PM

Though there are tons of one and two stars, plus walk ons that exceeded and made it to the NFL, try to recall a national #1 recruit that did not live up to his hype in college and never made it to the NFL.

My first thought is a running back out of Mississippi. I cannot remember his name, but a book was written about his recruitment. He ended up going to Oklahoma and Barry Switzer ruined him. Second thought is a linebacker out of Ohio years ago. He went to Ohio State and was a beast there but was definitely not a “student athlete.”

Any others?

OU guy was Marcus Dupree. He was as advertised

Dupree was likely the best running back ever, but had a horrible injury that finished his career. He came back but was never the same. Great E60 story. Great man too.

Dupree had a knee injury that at the time was career threatening if not career ending. I would also have to give strong consideration to Jimmy Clauson and Joe McKnight for the number 2 spot on the list...

To be fair, Nkemdiche made it to the league....I don't think he panned out, as I have no clue where he is currently (if he's even on a roster), but he still did more than any of us....I'm just sayin....

Re: Nkemdiche by a landslide...

Jun 28, 2021, 7:11 PM

the NFL draft is more about perceived pro potential than actual college production. There are so many that dot the first round draft picks of history that did not pan out. Nkemdiche was drafted high because he measured, lifted and ran like scouts wanted him to, but he did not accomplish the hype of being a generational talent. There are plenty that now stand out at the combine that as physical specimen that get questioned about lack of production or level of competition. For all of his accomplishments, Deshaun Watson was questioned about his football IQ so much that the Bears took Trubisky at No. 1 and not Watson

As a No. 1 recruit, NKemdiche has not panned out...

How about the running back from Lexington high school(SC) that Lou Holtz recruited?

Not a #1 recruit.

Demetrius Summers. I played against him in high school. He was a friggin beast.

weren’t #1, but highly recruited. I believe it was Watson, but it mighta been Demetrius Summers that Lou Holtz said, “You’ll be seeing him on Sundays. He may be sweeping the stadium out, but you’ll see him.” Lou was a manipulative scoundrel, but he’d sling some great one liners.

Re: Consensus #1 High School recruits that never panned out.

Demetrius Summers was a problem in HS. Jimmy Satterfield was the HC at the time at Lexington HS. Coach Satterfield had to assign a coach to make sure Summers stayed out of trouble, went to class and keep his grades up enough so DS could play football each season.

DS stayed in trouble at SC. Based on the information I have heard about him he ruined his own NFL career.

Did Clemson even recruit him? If so was it a hard recruit. I not sure with his grades he would gotten into Clemson.

My son played against him and he loved the challenge of facing that beast. They played each other 4 times in 3 years including a come from behind State Championship win in 2000. They won all 4 meetings against Lexington.

It depends on your definition of not panning out. I don't like the idea of going purely by getting drafted by the NFL. The NFL, just like some recruiting services, will base a decision based entirely on physical attributes, despite actual game performance. Two examples from us off the top of my head are Boulware not getting drafted despite being one of our better linebackers in the past 15 years and Mitch Hyatt not getting drafted despite being maybe the best Clemson offensive lineman of the Swinney era (yet Jackson Carman did because he fit the physical profile the NFL looks for). So I'll go by actual college impact.

Three players that were close to unanimous #1s that come to mind are Derrick Williams, Bryce Brown, and Robert Nkemdiche. Williams was supposed to be the best wide receiver to grace the field in 20 years. He had a big game his freshman year that caused a ton of hype, but his stats were very lacking the rest of his career. He managed about 1,000 yards receiving and 8 touchdowns in his last 3 years. I'd call that a flop because of his expectations. I'd call Bryce Brown the biggest flop. If people don't remember his recruitment (we went after him pretty hard), look it up, because it was crazy. He came in so hyped (two time All-American in high school, ran for like 8,000 yards and 90 TDs, and was compared to Barry Sanders). He was second string for Tennessee his freshman year and had like 400 yards and 3 touchdowns. Then he left when Kiffin got fired and went to Kansas State. He was fourth string there and played in one game against an FCS team and had around 15 yards rushing. He still got drafted because of high school hype (proving my point). I'm sure all of you remember Robert Nkemdiche's recruitment, but he was considered the best Southern player since Hershel Walker. He was good as a freshman (but not phenomenal), okay as a sophomore, and then got busted for drugs and since has been just a horrible first round pick.

Re: Consensus #1 High School recruits that never panned out.

Jun 27, 2021, 10:11 AM

Not really. The guy he cited was the #1 receiver and #3 player in the nation. Willy Korn had really high expectations because of all he did in high school (I've never seen an offense like that Byrnes' one) and because he was from our backyard. But he was a 4 Star, the #98 player, and #9 QB (behind: Jimmy Clausen, Ryan Mallett, Tyrod Taylor, Cam Newton, Aaron Corp, John Brantley, Mike Paulus, and Stephen Garcia (surprised me too)). We've had a ton of top 100 players that never really panned out like we had hoped. Korn is just one of those, though he has a better excuse than most given his serious injury.

in that car accident driving his car to meet him in Florida... we never realized it, but that really impacted him mentally. So much so, that the lack of motivation that we all witnessed in him was a direct result of him shouldering the blame for their deaths while still trying to meet the expectations of the world...

Re: Roscoe was never the same after his friends were killed

Jun 26, 2021, 10:53 PM

Plus he battled injuries. IMO Roscoe did show flashes of being Elite. But his 3 close friends driving down to see RC at Spring Training I the believe the Escalade rolled over several times and his friends burned to death. I not 100 % sure about fire. I am going from memory.

After their deaths and the fact RC was battling injuries he lost his way. He was doing his best trying to be successful at Clemson and earn his signing bonus with Kansas City.

As for Willie Korn he just had bad luck at Clemson plus he could not stay healthy. And I believe fans put to many expectations on him as a freshman. Willie Korn went on to lead North Greenville to one maybe two Championships. Now he is on the coaching staff at Coastal Carolina.

Some players are a bust because of circumstances they create and then their are those who I don’t consider a bust instead they had to choose a different path based life circumstances beyond their control.

When Marcus went OU Barry Switzer had no intention of playing him because he was a freshman. A freshman who could run circles around anybody. After OU lost their first 2 or 3 games orders from the top told Barry Switzer to start Marcus Camby. He run up and down the field and OU I believe won out. Marcus left school and was not going back to OU. But the next day a new really nice modular home was delivered to Marcus Camby’s mom. He return to OU but your right B S ruined one of the best RB’s I have had the privilege to watch play.

It’s a shame a coach can destroy a kid mentally and ruin his chances for a great NFL.
