Conference Expansion Perspective

So ive read several posts about conference expansion and some of the suggestions just does not make sense. So here is a little perspective on how it all works. (If any of you think I have this wrong or incomplete, please jump in) Well when you add a team, or 2 as is usual, the conference revenue goes from getting split from 1/14 per school to 1/16 per school. That of course is okay if the schools you bring in expand the pie enough for all involved. In the case of the SEC, adding Texas and OU expanded the pie (total conference revenue) in a huge way so even though each school is getting a smaller share of the total, the total is much larger so everyone is getting more money. If the ACC adds two schools like UCF and Navy... ESPN would not add very much to our TV deal to add those two schools... but they would still get 1/16th of the total revenue and our share would go from 1/14th to 1/16th.. which means we would get less money than we are getting now. So... when you think about which schools you want to add to the ACC, you want it to be big names from big markets or it is just going to take money out of orange pockets. So potential teams.. 1. ND 2. Penn St These two are sure things... would be a win for everyone. Probably wont happen, but they should be the target.
3. Oklahoma St Probably Pac12 bound but would be a new market.. it might increase revenue enough to make it work.
4. West Virginia Ehh.. probably break even with this one, if we are lucky.
5. UCF, Navy, Memphis, USF, Navy etc etc etc We all lose money and water down the conference
So while from a culture perspective, some of the above teams would be an okay fit..it would not be good for the conference. You either have to somehow steal a big name from another conference or figure out what the heck ND wants.

I don't think you have any of this wrong or incomplete but you only have to look to the last line of your post to find out why expansion will not work. What Notre Dame wants is "complete control" and as long as they have it there will be no expansion because you can't have a team that is "Half -In" versus "All-In" and then add one more team.(As you said expansion is usually 2 teams). And as long as Notre Dame sets the narrative, technically, you can't have expansion. So to make a political comparison, we need a Commissioner with balls to tell Notre Dame where to stick it. Similar to the position "Uncle Joe "is in. But he ain't got the balls to do it either.

Expansion to me just doesn't make sense for us as a conference. As far as I am concerned tell ND to get all in or all out. What is of interest to me is the TV contracts of the PAC and B1G. If as an alliance a larger TV contract can be negotiated we might be able to simply leave the ESPN contract. Of course I don't know what the financial terms of us leaving are or if there is any. It would seem to me that us leaving as a conference instead of asking for more money wouldn't be that expensive especially if there was another network offering a better deal.

with the alliance of the three conferences does that put any pressure on Notre Dame to join? Does being independent still help that or will it put them on an island and miss out on playoffs.

There is no way Penn would move to the ACC…, it would be a huge cut in their revenue. Wishful thinking; it’ll never happen or even be considered.

You are right about the pie getting split up, but I don't think the end game in all of this is expansion at all, but rather contraction. Adding teams that weren't in the P5? I just don't see it happening. Why throw lifelines to folks who could ultimately cast you to the side in their place? They have effectively reduced it by eight already if none of the rest of the B12 gets picked up by anyone.
This is about money, and the less people that you have to split it with, the better. I believe that is the mindset of the power brokers in this.
