and a relevant regular season, then yes, the conference champion is automatic.
An 8 team playoff is all you need under this scenario. 5 P5 teams, possibly one G5 and 2 or 3 at large.

If all five conferences have the same, guaranteed access to the playoffs, schools from conferences not named "the SEC" will enjoy a more level recruiting playing field. In other words, players who just want to play for one conference or a certain school will still go there. Players who want to win championships will take a little broader view than they might be taking now.

Always has been before, but won’t be this year.
No team has lost in December and gone into the CFP, but UGa will this year because ACC, Big XII and PAC-12 won’t have a conference champion w/ fewer than 2 losses.
Ohio St and Bama have been invited in past years in spite of missing their championship games, with Bama winning the Natty in spite of not winning the SEC in 2017.
Tank Bigsby’s fault that Bama is going again this year.

Selection committee made UGa the first team to lose a CCG but still make the CFP.
Was that really worth a TD?

Buddy, Notre Dame lost a conference championship game to us (Clemson) just last year (by more points than Georgia lot) and still made the playoffs. Short memory or selective memory?

The ACC and Pac 12 champs have no business in an 8 team playoff this year muchless 4.

If Ok State won, I think Jawja would have been out. But Jawja got lucky that the only other 1 loss no champ was ND who lost to Cincy.

Yep and then take the highest rated Group of 5 conference championship game winner…that gives you 6 teams and that’s a plenty…it includes every conference, ensures ALL teams have a chance and makes the sport diverse geographically…seed the 6 and play…
This year it would be Bama, Mich, Utah, Baylor, Pitt and Cincy in the playoffs…
