Computer Geeks - HD opinions

1TB SATA or 128 GB SSD? I have a 5 TB external HD to backup/store stuff on. The SSD would be an extra $20.

What are you trying to do?

You're comparing a corvette to a bus.

Personal/Student use

I'm thinking the SSD and just regularly backing up stuff.

The SSD is about 100x faster than the SATA drive.

Works well for a drive to have Windows on and boot from. The SATA is good for storage because its better.

Just noticed a mistype

I mean"because the SATA is BIGGER, not "better"".

Definitely the ssd as long as you back up regularly.

It's not just a space issue; ssd's are more prone to failure and it's unlikely you can get any data off the ssd if it fails.

I've not found that to be true.

I've probably got 500+ SSd's deployed over the last 2 years in both SAN and as data drives in blade servers. I quit buying the more expensive SLC based drives because the MLC price has come down, and we just aren't seeing the failure rate we were warned about.

Concur. I have yet to have a SATA SSD fail me.

I probably have about 30 in service right now.
