Comparing basketball programs…

1

What does Virginia Tech have that Clemson does not?
(Besides a really good coach and an ACC tournament championship)

I seriously would like to know the answer to this.
Can anyone educate me?

Here is what I see at VT:
- Rural setting
- Fans and admin care most about football
- Facilities about 40 years behind schedule
- Not much notable basketball history (good players and decent teams scattered here and there)

I think Va Tech has a better overall fanbase when it comes to basketball. Now a lot of that was started with Buzz Williams and now Mike Young.

Just face it Clemson dropped the ball when Oliver Purnell left. Had a chance to capitalize on the program success by investing in basketball put took longer than needed after Brad was already here and showed he isn't the answer.

I respectfully don’t think “better overall fan base” is valid.

Especially when, like you mentioned, that would’ve mostly begun when Buzz Williams arrived.

Our fans have been pretty darn good when we had coaches who gave us reason for hope and excitement.

Purnell went as far as Purnell could go

He never won an NCAA tournament game
He played cup cake preseason schedule to get into Top 25 then played barely above 500 in ACC
His teams could not shoot free throws
His teams relied on one thing Full Court Press to win. Live by sword. Die by sword
He did not develop players
He split in middle of the night and stunk at DePaul.

Brad B may not be able to get Clemson to Top Team Status in ACC consistently. But who has at Clemson? No one consistently.

Barnes is the coach who could have built something at Clemson and he saw writing on the wall. He left for a better job

Clemson fanbase is delusional about its historical basketball prowess and success. Our basketball history is akin to UsuCks football history.

Now can it change? Yes. Will it? Depends upon finding a program builder who wants to build something at Clemson. And it takes someone to win over and keep the Clemson community!

We need a "Daboesque" person for basketball. Brad is not that.

But who is?
There are not many Dabos in NCAA Football.

Exactly. There is no reason that Clemson's ongoing

Mar 13, 2022, 12:04 PM

historical failures in basketball must continue. None. Those who can't see this have just been beaten down for so long that they can't see that things can be better. They are like battered women who stay in abusive relationships. Open your eyes, because Clemson basketball can:

Win an ACC regular season Championship.
Win the ACC tournament.
Finish in the top 25 at least half of the time.
Be RELEVANT in college basketball.

This is not a far fetched fantasy; it's the reality. We may never be a UNC/Duke powerhouse, a top 5 team competing for the national championship every year, but we can be much better than we have been, moving up a notch on that ladder of relevancy and respectability. We won't be a top 25 team every year; we'll have down years and rebuilding stretches, but there is nothing inherent about Clemson that prevents us from being more competitive than we have been. That should be the expectation.

Well said, I agree 100%! Why not Clemson?

Fire the coach has been going on long enough from some fans. Others have seen the light the last six years. If there is going to be a time to change it is now. Dukes and unc are basically done and now is the time (well past time) to better our position. Money is not the answer for a coach to do well, but Now is the time to make a change.

In terms of facilities, Littlejohn Coliseum is WAY nicer than Cassell Coliseum. Their arena is dumpy in my view.

Va Tech has a nice practice facility for basketball from what I can see online. I think our practice facility is on par with it and our facility has the advantage of being attached to our arena, whereas VT's practice facility is a mile away from the arena.
