College Sports being destroyed by NIL

Dec 11, 2021, 10:59 AM

If you take a look at some of these programs that we are having to compete against and the fact they have found a way to pay ever player on their team, then the playing field is no longer level. It will be interesting to see where these 3 IMG decomitted players go. It seems from what I read on this board that Miami, LSU, Georgia and others are doing this. We all know corruption has been going on in college sports for ever but it is being magnified many times over now. It is going to be much harder for Clemson to win on the field if this environment is not stopped in its tracks by the NCAA. Don’t be hard on our coaches when they lose to some of these what will become professional teams. Players playing for pay that have one goal to play in the NFL and not concerned about a degree is going to be lethal.

Correct. As long as NIL and the Transfer Portal exists, college football, as we knew it is over.

My thoughts exactly. Even if we wanted to compete at that level, we simply can not. Clemson’s alumni is 1/3 the size of the likes of UGa and 1/5 the size of tOSU. The Frame shop in downtown Clemson might pay a player $500 to sign autographs and yet there’s an alumni in Columbus that paid a player $1.5m to sit on the bench for 1 year.

But some schools view it as their salvation

Dec 11, 2021, 11:27 AM

Bc otherwise they wouldn’t be able to compete. Now teams in California and big cities like Austin and maybe even the northeast will be able to compete bc the money is their. Whereas us in Pickens Co will have a tougher time selling NIL to a kid who wants that extra cash. It’s just the new normal.

NCAA is being smart about it. They are making a fortune off these players. Instead of paying them themselves they let other people do it. It's a genius idea only a villain would create.

was ideal for everyone except the players. We had it good. It is what it is.

And please, you don't need to explain to me the value of an education.

Im sorry but thats beyond ignorant. Blatantly stupid in fact.

Dec 11, 2021, 1:41 PM

How was it not ideal for the players?! That's utterly ludicrous. They were already making 6 figures a year before nil. Poor abused football players! Stupid, stupid, stupid take.

It was ideal for the players back when the players valued their education. That just simply isn’t the case anymore. The NFL wasn’t paying out the multimillion dollar contracts you see nowadays. Most all college players (except for the SUPER gifted ones) knew they wouldn’t sniff the pro level, hence they laid out plans for their futures based on their education. These days, because of all the money and resources being thrown at these players from the time they’re 10 years old, every player thinks he’s the next Suh, Rice, Brady, Tomlinson, etc. Education? Please…that just gets in the way. That’s how these guys think now. So they’re demanding money because that’s what they put value in. We all know education has great value, but the reality of that is not acknowledged by the players. Their perception is that education is worthless because of their athletic skill…and PERCEPTION beats reality every time. It’s just human nature, sadly.

It's not over, it's different. We as a program have to adjust.
We can't complain about other programs having the advantage on us in this area, we have to find ways to compete with them in this area.

I remember the days of people crying because our facilities wasn't up to par with other major programs, then we adjusted...

You can't cry and whine about other programs being better suited to recruit when they are following the rules.

We sure don't mind using our facilities and advantages we have to recruit at a better level than other acc schools....we love using that advantage to keep our foot on their neck....

Don't be hypocritical...

It's the AD and dabo job to get us on a level playing field

You've literally had situations where college football players families was homeless in the streets while universities made millions and millions of dollars of that particular player....

You don't see a problem with that?

Re: Im sorry but thats beyond ignorant. Blatantly stupid in fact.

Yep when I played college football it was a rule that we couldn't have jobs. So there I was with no job driving a beat up car for my 3 a day practices in the off season. I barely had anything then and it basically costed me money just to play football. So I'm happy with the players making money now. I'm just unhappy how its implemented in a way that schools can now have bidding wars.

Clemson players were making money?

Re: Lol

Dec 11, 2021, 4:24 PM

The fact players haven't always been able to get paid for their likeness is crazy to me.

Every other student in college could get paid for their likeness except athletes.

You had famous YouTube channels by students at Ohio state that talked about Ohio state football and made 90k a year....but the ppl they talked about couldn't get paid to do.a interview

That's ridiculous

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Have you seen any players complaining about NIL or transfer portal?

Dec 11, 2021, 4:23 PM [ in reply to Im sorry but thats beyond ignorant. Blatantly stupid in fact. ]

I only see fans complaining. I hate it too, but your line of thinking is utterly ridiculous.

Re: College Sports being destroyed by NIL

Dec 11, 2021, 2:22 PM

Blame the NCAA, which means the presidents of the universities. They decided, decades ago, that the primary purpose of the football (and basketball) programs were to be the minor league for the NFL (and NBA). Academics are a necessary evil and they keep changing the rules to make it easier for kids to do minimal work and stay eligible.

NIL and transfer portal are two logical (maybe even inevitable) consequences.

Teams who do not adjust to this model will soon become 2nd tier football teams.

Think of Army/Navy. They have no NIL or transfer portal. Kids go there to graduate and prepare for a career, not in the NFL.

But, no fans want their teams to do that.

Personally I’ll be fine with it

I’m a Clemson graduate and If I’m going to support pro sports I’ll support an NFL team. Then I’ll focus my college attendance on something like softball. I have no desire to spend money on people wearing a Clemson jersey who could care less about Clemson or trying to graduate from Clemson. It’s becoming a farce.

Watching Army Navy now. Feels refreshing just watching these teams. Absolutely hate what has happened to college sports.

This will definitely shift the powers if the NCAA doesn’t shut down the illegitimate NIL stuff. This Texas lineman thing is a farce. I’m not just curious how this changes Clemson but how does Bama compete with it. Does Bama have a massive rich alumni base? I honestly don’t know. On the surface I’d say they don’t. I know Ohio State, Michigan, Texas, Southern Cal and a select few have a huge advantage. Heck, does Oklahoma? Maybe they have oil money????

Alabama definitely can compete with other NIL contracts. Just this year Rosenhaus Sports, Roc Nation and CAA all signed Alabama players. These 3 are talent and marketing/agent companies. Rosenhaus and JayZ are the owners of the first 2 companies are worth close to 1.5 billion together.

NIL has completely changed recruiting and football as we know it.
