College Football Playoff games

Dec 15, 2021, 11:40 AM

I've seen a couple of posters mention that Clemson getting blown out in the playoffs is a sign that Clemson is regressing, but I think its just a small part of an even bigger problem in college football.

The playoff games are not good games. They've mostly been blowouts.

Don't get me wrong I prefer the playoffs to the BCS. But the playoffs have shown that there's one team that really good and everyone else is not really close, so why bother expanding. Think about it, over the last 3 years there's been one playoff game that was competitive in the 4th quarter, when Clemson beat Ohio State in 2019. Every other game over that time has been decided by at least 3 scores.

Which brings the question, why are we considering expanding the playoffs? The obvious answer is more playoff games means more money, but from a competitive sense there is reason to bring 12 teams in. If Alabama rolls through the playoff like everyone expects them to why is the committee discussing inviting teams like Notre Dame(#5), Baylor(#6), or even BYU(#12) to be lambs to the slaughter.

Alabama is a 13.5 point favorite over Cincinnati right now. To put that into perspective Clemson was an 11.5 point favorite over South Carolina. Which means Vegas thinks the Clemson vs South Carolina was a closer matchup than the number 4 team vs the number 1 team.

If CFP games continue to be blowouts fans will look at an expansion as just delaying the inevitable and ratings will suffer.

The obvious answer is the CFP owner (ESPN) wants more SEC teams in to increase the chances and revenue of their bought and paid for conference.

As a fan, I much prefer the old bowl system***

You make some interesting points.

I think CFB ratings were already on the down-swing the last couple of seasons and I think it's a trend that'll continue. More playoff games will most likely lead to more blowouts.

Programs that have lots of wealthily donors will fund huge NIL deals for players (like Texas) and are going to get stronger and stronger. We're going back to the Southwest Conference days where everyone's paying to get the best players.

The NCAA has made mess with the NIL, and the Transfer Portal. 5 years from now we'll be looking at a completely college football different landscape.

It's getting to the point where I'd almost rather watch a high school football game.

No offense but this has always been the worst argument

Against playoff expansion in my opinion. Being scared of more blowouts? As it is right now, at least 2 of the 3 hive games are usually blowouts. Sometimes all 3.

Expanding the playoff increases the chances of good games! If there’s a 12 team playoff there will be 11 total games. A few are bound to be great games along the way. 11 bites at the apple is better than 3. And people are going to remember a great playoff game, even if it’s round 1, more fondly than a great bowl game.

You make a good point but even the committee can't seem to agree on the number. Should be 8 teams. Playoff's, IMO, should consist of the 5 power conference championship winner plus 3 at large teams.
However to qualify a team has to compete for the conference title. Sorry Notre Dame. You do not get to sit at home while a Clemson Pittsburg or Georgia Alabama are battling it out.
And I seldom look at odds. They are nothing more than betting numbers. Show me a team, any team that ever won a game by the score of 13.5 to 0.
