College baseball scholarships ... is CU at a disadvantage?

Mar 18, 2015, 8:55 PM

Simple question:

Does Clemson compete against other programs whose baseball teams have substantially more scholarships to offer players?

Follow-up questions:

If the answer is yes, then WHY is this happening?

If the answer is no, then never mind.

Thanks in advance ...

I think all NCAA DIV 1 programs operate with same number.

Well I would think that Clemson should be able to compete with anyone financially.

Some schools have advantages and some have disadvantages. I know that a lot of coaches in the SEC aren't very happy right now because Vanderbilt supplements baseball scholarships with money out of their endowment. Supposedly they do this for all of their students so there isn't anything against NCAA regulations.

In SC, in-state students can get their baseball scholarship supplemented with the lottery money. Same can be said for Georgia.

11.7 for everyone. Some schools get creative with allotments and it's perfectly legal to offer in-state tuition to out-of-state athletes. We should have been the first school to do this, not the last. The thing that kills everything is football. 85 scholarships for males and Title Nine says equal schollys for male and female. Someone with sense, if they can be found, should have excluded football and made everything else equal.

schools like UVA, Vandy (basically the private schools) and some of the liberal arts schools (like unc) have scholarship endowment funds approaching 10X what CU has. Last year, UVA's starting 1B, 3B and 2 weekend starting P were on full academic ships and did not count against the NCAA limit of 11.7 baseball ships. Obviously those kids are good students, but at CU they would get a couple$1000 academic money, simply because the school has less to give. and those academic ships cannot be athletically based.. you compete against all students for it. also those schools with more academic $$ might not give a full academic ship.. but give 25% baseball and maybe that much or more academic to some kids. sooo.. they are STRETCHING their 11.7 baseball ships closer to 18-20 and supplementing almost all their kids. CU simply can't do that. the endowment $ are not there.then there is the "academic common market' where out of state kids can get in state tuition rates. Do a little math on how much that saves a kid from out of state if the parents are having to pay 50-75% of the cost (after a 25% baseball ship). its a huge amt. usc brought in Jackie bradley on the "common market) a few years back. i believe the kids entering CU this fall will be able to get common market rates. don't hold me to that.. it is at least in the works.

added together, yes , we are at a disadvantage in baseball recruiting. not an excuse.. we need o get better. but it is a problem and if we hire a new coach before this is addressed, it will be a sticking point for most if not all candidates.

Thanks ... sort of disheartening ...

This is not an excuse for the way the current (and recent) seasons have gone ... but at some point if-and-when the Clemson baseball coaches are actually maximizing their resources to the fullest ... and they still have to play teams with substantially greater resources, it does become a valid excuse.

Fans here have mentioned that the coach at Vanderbilt would be a logical choice for Clemson should JL depart. But, how in the the world could Clemson attract this coach if the disparity in financial aid for players is that great?

And how can JL or any other Clemson coach keep up with UVA under the present circumstances?

what is really hard to believe is that most people that claim to love clemson baseball have no clue about this.

Well wasn't that also the case in the past when we were going to Omaha on a regular basis? Has the opportunity to supplement athletic scholarships with endowment money just been instituted?

why do you think the acc became a power in ncaa baseball. hell uva almost disbanded baseball. they got a big gift from john grisham to build there facilities and dumped a ton of money into the program. clemson used to be the only team in the acc that gave a rats ### about baseball. almost every team now has at least decent facilities. we will be fine soon no matter who the coach is with the new facilities and help from the administration. hopefully coach gets it turned around so he can have a chance to compete on somewhat of a level field.

we were already paying in-state rates for athletes.

Clemson, for instance, grants in-state tuition to athletes so that the scholarship dollars stretch further — a savings of about $2.5 million to the athletics department.

Is the way the scholarships are divided up different at each school ?

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yes and no

Mar 19, 2015, 10:28 PM

Each school gets 11.7 scholarships to be spread out among no more than 27 players with every player who gets a portion of a scholarship getting at least the equivalent of 25% of a full scholarship. Inside that framework each team can divide up the 11.7 any way they want...say one player getting 55% of a schollie, another getting 30%, etc.

Women's equestrian gets 15...
