Why do some highly Starred players struggle to make the

transition to college football, while others come in and flourish immediately? To some extent it may be about individual drive and learning ability, but those are things that should have been checked off in the recruiting process.

What may be the main ingredient, which we as fans hardly even consider, is: How similar is the college scheme to what the player learned in high school? The line I hear a lot is, "We are asking him to do a whole lot of new things". If we recruit players who at least have a passing familiarity with the type of offense we want them to run, or the defensive scheme we want them to play in, they, and we, will be immediately ahead of the game.

Now, more than ever, college coaches cannot afford to "miss" on prospects. You can invest a boatload of training and effort into making someone who started out behind into a serviceable player. He can then turn around and walk right out the door because he doesn't think he is getting his deserved playing time.

So, as an informed fan, we should try to dig deeper and find out some of this stuff for ourselves. Then, we may understand team dynamics, and the struggles of individual players. This type of stuff is just another reason that the best college coaches really do earn a huge chunk of their income from OFF the field evaluations.

I guess you need to know if the “star” system means that much. Does a kid get his star rating from attending camps and tryouts where he runs a 40 and a 3 cone shuttle drill and is evaluated by people who may have an interest in promoting certain kids, does his star rating come from being the best player in a state with not great talent, does his star rating come from being on a dominant prep school like IMG where it’s difficult to tell if he benefits from the presence of other dominant players on his team or does his star rating just get inflated because of who has offered him? The Clemson staff I believe blocks out most of that and goes on what they see, hear from the kids coaches and learn from the kid and his family. The more we fly around the country and recruit nationally the more uncomfortable I get because I feel like you have to learn who the good teams are you can use to evaluate your potential signees against. Seems we had traditional beds in the northeast for lineman, Florida for speed and SC, GA, NC and AL for LBs and DLs. JMO
