Coach O Takes $300,000 PPP Govt Bailout Loam

Jul 8, 2020, 6:56 AM

For Coach O Football Camps due to coronavirus. Tom Brady $500,000 for TB12 Nutrition.

I can sorta see Brady’s needs as a businessman to save some full time jobs but how many full time employees does Coach O, a guy that hosts these camps at a state owned facility, need to keep employed?

People that suckle on the govt teet when their not really desperate for help need to think long and hard before pointing the finger at others accepting needed help or before aligning politically with those who want to slash critical government programs. Hypocrisy at its worst.

I don't know all of the facts of this deal, but on the surface it's a real bad
look.

That being said, our country will very soon collapse from the weight of entitlement programs that eat up roughly 2/3 of the entire Federal Budget. Other than pointing the finger at people who understand math, what's your solution?

My point is that I am frustrated at many (including friends and relatives) that are staunch right wing that accept government handouts and entitlements that they rationalize as ‘okay’ but are quick to push to end entitlements for people that are in dire need. I am a retired military vet that refuses to accept VA help (even at the urging of others -who happen to be very pro-Trump and right wing-that are abusing the system) with the hopes that small effort will free up benefits for vets coming home missing limbs or otherwise seriously injured either physically or mentally.

I don’t have a solution. Also just a good reason to pile on Coach O who I have followed for years since his time as an assistant at Syracuse and think is a back stabbing hypocrite. He’s a head coach killer who hasade a career of undermining his bosses and sliding into their jobs.

I would think that taking government "relief" due to the government forcing you to shut down a business that you have built is far different than generational entitlement programs. There are going to be abuses, because people are inherently greedy, but after the funds are dispersed they have to go back to running their business.

That said, it's hard for me to see the Coach O deal as anything less than abuse.

I think the PPP loans are supposed to help businesses pay

Jul 8, 2020, 9:17 AM [ in reply to Re: Coach O Takes $300,000 PPP Govt Bailout Loam ]

their employees for a time - even though they don't actually need them (because of the forced govt shutdown). I guess I don't see that as an entitlement.

Unrelated note: Thank you for your service!

I hear you.

Keep in mind, our government writes the legislation. The blame for defective legislation falls squarely on their shoulders.

Our veterans deserve priority in my opinion. But, entitlements were created by the left. The left refuses to have an honest discussion about entitlements. My point is that until we have a genuine discussion about entitlement reform picking at the edges is irrelevant. The only people who want real reform are voices from the right (and middle), not the left.

At this point, the only solution I see is to dismantle much of the Federal Gov't and return power to the states to run their economies as they see fit. The Fed is too big to adequately police or enforce the bail-out programs they're charged with administering.

The solution is simple. We need more money to spend, and we need to spend it more effectively. AKA tax large corporations and the super wealthy more and slash defense spending significantly.

What do you expect from a Government run program?

Jul 8, 2020, 7:53 AM

Efficiency? That the program actually works the way it was intended?

Apologize for the sarcasm but Government run programs typically end up being taxpayer funded sinkholes characterized by wasteful spending that are routinely abused or defrauded.

I'm sure Coach O and Tom Brady are within the legal framework of the program but are outside the original intent; to help small businesses who don't have the resources to survive without help from the government. I'm fairly certain Coach O and Tom Brady have the means to self finance their business ventures through this COVID-19 period but have apparently chosen to have the taxpayers do it for them. Reminds me of the old adage "Just because you can do a thing doesn't mean you should do a thing"...

You had better believe it - I am a one person

corporation and am my only employee and got a letter telling me how to apply for this deal. Never even considered applying and dk if I would have been approved, but if I had been, I would have been accepting money to pay myself as the employee who was not working so I would have hired myself back after the financial crisis is over. And would never have had to pay the loan back. Coach O really had no employees for a camp that was cancelled since this was a temporary job and they won't necessarily be hired back as permanent workers as intended. He should pay it back out of his own pocket and let his "employees" keep the pay the government handed out. No different from the few big corporations who were caught doing similar things early in this process and returned money.

I'm with you... if it is true that Coach O and Tom Brady

Jul 8, 2020, 9:17 AM

took PPP money it says a lot about who they are and the direction of their moral compass. It is a real shame that people see these programs as a chance to get free taxpayer money - especially when they are already wealthy.

I really wish our government programs were efficient and actually got the help to only those who really need it.

Well, it's the American way.

I have some assets but I take the government ss money every month. I don't really need it, but I take it. To my mind that makes me a good bit like all the other takers.

I have a brother-in-law who owns a house in a nice sized city in the west, who has a little ranch about 150 miles from his home, and he and his wife mostly live in their 5th wheel RV traveling 6-7 months per year. He says he is living off of his post-tax cash and social security. He says they both got their stimulus check.

I'm a conservative voter and the democrats have not gotten a vote from me for a national office since Carter was president. And I am not stinkin' rich. Still I think there ought to be a means test for anyone and everyone who takes government money directly as income.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-15yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Social security is not government money, that's YOUR money

Jul 8, 2020, 9:09 AM

that you've paid into the system. So don't feel guilty at all about getting that check each month.

Amazing that this seems so difficult for people to grasp.

Using the word ‘social’ seems to have been a mistake in retrospect.

Got no love for Brady or O, and certainly if any of these funds went into Ogeron or Brady’s pockets they should be required to pay the funds back. However, this could be a legitimate case of a small business supporting its workers. There are hundreds of people working these football camps many of whom are likely HS or small school coaches. They’re already looking at budget cuts during the season so, if workers in other industries are getting relief, I don’t see a problem helping these coaches out as well. For every coach that makes >$4MM there are a thousand that make <$40K; extra income from camps and seminars keep these guys afloat. If Dabo accepted funds to help the coaches who are losing out on income due to his camp’s cancellation I would not have a problem with it.

O & Brady

Jul 8, 2020, 6:41 PM [ in reply to Maybe, just maybe ]

both will pay far far more in taxes this year than they get from these programs.

While I hate the system, I fully understand anyone trying to get back as much of their tax money as they can thru legal means.

AND if they use some/most of that money to pay those who are not able to work, great for them.

As for the camps, usually they hire HS coaches to work them. Those guys need the $$$$$$.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That's a horribly weak take.

Jul 8, 2020, 7:39 PM [ in reply to O & Brady ]

Obviously that's a desperate attempt to justify. Better off just admitting he abused the system.

I know several

business owners who have not missed a beat this year , and took thousands from the program. One even bragged about having a record year so far and he got tens of thousands. This is fraud. This makes me sick to my stomach. I am a business owner and I’ve had a great year. I did not take the money because it’s simply wrong. It’s intended for people who are hurting because of this virus. I am an ultra conservative , Trump voting business owner saying fraud is fraud no matter what your political preference or socioeconomic status.
