Clemson's first 7 opponents are a combined 34-17

Oct 19, 2014, 5:26 PM

One thing I would point out to fans who are down on Clemson is that not only have we suffered massive losses since January on the offensive side of the ball, we've also played a murderer's row.

Our opponents are a combined 34-17 this season, a winning percentage of .667.

We have played only one team with a losing record thus far this season - UNC. Who was a preseason Top-25 team, almost knocked off Notre Dame in South Bend last week, and who did knock off previously unbeaten Georgia Tech this week.

We have played on the road at Athens, on the road at FSU, and on the road at BC.

We have played the #1 defense in college football in Louisville.

We have played the #8 defense in college football in Boston College.

The Clemson schedule this year was as front-loaded as any Clemson schedule I can remember in recent memory. The teams down the back stretch all have one thing in common: their defenses are terrible, and other than Georgia Tech's rather gimmicky triple option, none of them have anything resembling killer offenses either.

Just sayin'. And I would also point out that FSU, despite winning last night, could well be about to lose Jameis Winston. If they lose Jameis Winston, every game they play down the stretch is loseable. The Seminoles get Louisville next week - in Pizza Hut Park. (They could lose that game, Winston or no Winston...that Louisville D is vicious, as we saw very well.) They play UVA - who is much-improved this year, they're at Miami, they play a very tough BC team, and they play UF who are a train wreck but who will certainly show up for a rivalry game against the hated Seminoles. Anybody who thinks there aren't 2-3 losses and a complete meltdown awaiting the Seminoles in that group if Winston goes down is fooling themselves. FSU just isn't playing that well this year.

The season ain't over yet, and all these hard-won victories we're gutting out shorthanded could put us in an interesting position later.

One point I always try to remember about college football is that almost everything is a projection of long-term expectations. I believe we will finish strong and be in the top 15 at least by all is said and done this season. Not bad for a team in "rebuilding" mode. That sets us up nicely for next season when people will be paying a lot more attention to us. The ACC knows who we are, but we're very much under the radar on the national stage. Not a bad place to be at all.

Well said. Let me add that

We are doing it with a new QB. Both Stoudt and Watson had never started a game before this year. And UGA/FSU games were early in the season and on the road...tough for new QB's regardless of their talent.

Is there one team ranked ahead of us right now that's has a first year starting QB?

Duke beat GT last week before the Heels got them but I agree with your posts. Tigers are better than many think.

FSU can lose 2 in conference play, no doubt.

They will be highly vulnerable on the road against Louisville on a Thursday night. The Cards missed their chance to make the statement they're looking for this season against us, so their home game against the Noles is their only shot for a meaningful win in 2014. With or without Jameis, I like their chances here.

At Miami is always going to be weird, especially if there's blood in the water after an L. UVA and BC are sneaky tough - nothing's out of the realm of possibility here.

I'll say this, no 2-loss team has their losses when, where and how like we have this year - same goes for many 1-loss teams.

Seasons play out 12 games. Anything can happen. Go Tigers!
