Clemson Traditions

Feb 28, 2021, 6:28 PM

Howdy, Texas Tech Red Raider here. I am the head coach of my son's tee ball team. Our little league team names are compromised of college sports teams. My beloved Red Raiders were already picked, so I chose Clemson over the likes of bama, Notre Dame, Auburn, and the stupid aggies. Anywho, I am trying to find out more about Clemson traditions that I can apply with the kids. I am aware of Howard's Rock, and plan on having a big rock our little guys can rub as they are going out onto the field.

Are there any other Clemson traditions/sayings/chants I should be aware of? Are y'all "Go Tigers" folks or something else? Best of luck to you, and thank you for any input.

-Red Raider

Clemson cadets used to wave their caps at the end of singing the alma mater. Now we wave our hands to mimic that gesture. Maybe you could work that into part of the program. Go to youtube and search "clemson singing alma mater". Maybe have them stand together and wave at their parents at the end of the game??

You got to do the “walk of champions” or “champions walk” basically every pregame our team locks arms in a lateral line and walks into the opposing ENDZONE as a sign of unity and strength. The coach is in the center. It’s pretty cool. Would be awesome seeing a bunch of 6 year olds do this. Maybe gather at home plate right before game time and lock arms and walk into the dugout. Would be cool.

"Sometimes people may take that the wrong way. You don't see win national championships up there. That's not our goal. Our goal is to be the best we can be,” Swinney said. “We want to be our best. Whatever God gave you, be the best you can possibly be. That applies in every area whether it's the best coach you can be, the best player, whatever.

“If you're a walk-on, commit to be the best you can be. You probably won't be a starter, but be the best you can be with what God gave you and you can live with whatever the results are. When you're trying to be THE best, that's comparing yourself to other people. We want to be the best Clemson can be. It's effort, preparation, work ethic, attitude - -all the things that you can control and relevant to you being your best. It's sleep, nutrition, what you do when no one is watching."

Here are several, including the cadence count, alma mater, $2 bills with Clemson tiger paw stamps, tailgaiting, etc:

Gathering at the Paw (after the games...what most uniformed people try to call "storming the field"...happens win OR lose. Right now, they aren't allowing it with COVID protocols, but you'll see it in any normal year.

If you incorporate a tiger paw into a team logo, make sure it is tilted slightly to the right to point to 1:00 - which was our traditional kickoff time.

Hopefully for you, one of the other teams might be named gamecocks. You must beat them every time, and you will.

LOL! Guys this is a tee ball team. I don't think they are going to be handing out $2 bills, gathering at a paw on the field and learning the alma mater. A couple of chants like "Go Tigers", Cadence and locking arms and doing the pregame champion walk is probably enough for them to handle.

You always throw out everything. You'd be surprised how someone can take the original concept and find a way to incorporate something similar (Gathering at the PAW could be come a parent tradition with their kids on the pitchers mound after a game).

I think you will be fine: TTU has a fine tradition of beating the coots (South Carolina)

In 2012, the Raider Red won the Capital One Mascot Challenge, beating the University of South Carolina's Cocky

For the kids, the rock, walk of champions, and meeting at the "paw" would be a good one.

However the most important thing is this: You work hard, play hard and be HUMBLE.

Plus, you can always create a graveyard for your opponents. Just little cardboard tombstones. Name of the team and the score. Technically it is over top 25 team victories (formally road victories only).
