Clemson past and present

Feb 3, 2018, 8:50 PM

I hear people saying this could be one of the best squads we have had in some time. If u put this team up against the 07-08 team that made it to the acc championship against UNC they don't stand a chance IMO. That team had Trevor Booker, still in a the association, kc rivers, jeria grant, cliff Hammond's, James Maye's, Terrance oglesby, and demontez stitt(rip). I think thats collectively some of the best players Clemson has ever had on one team, and the last to make it to the acc finals.

The 96-97 team with Buck, Boogie, Wideman, Jamison, Code...

pretty good too. They only went 9-7 in the ACC

1989-1990 Cliff Ellis team led by Dale Davis and Elden Campbell would be difficult for any other Clemson team to beat.

What are the past teams 28 years ago doing for us now. Trying to compare yesteryear's players and teams with 2018 is an absolutely moot argument when comparing them to today's team...Cheer for and back what we have now, bc yesteryear's teams or players won't get us in the 2018 NCAA tournament!!!

I thought time travel was a football thread.

Of the years of watching Clemson BB from 68-69 season to present that team was the ever at Clemson.

That '07-'08 team was very good.

Feb 4, 2018, 10:57 AM

They were 24-10 overall, 10-6 in the ACC, good for third in the ACC. Strength of schedule was 4th nationally, and RPI was 32. That was definitely a talented team - certainly one of our most talented in Clemson history. The run to the ACC championship game was outstanding, but the first round loss in the NCAA Tournament was very disappointing.

This year, we are 19-4, 8-3 in the ACC, good for second place. Strength of schedule is 15th nationally, and RPI is 4. In terms of talent, I think this year's team is slightly better than the '07-'08 team from top to bottom. Booker edges Thomas down low, but our guards this year are slightly better than the '07-'08 team. Most importantly, I think this year's team is a closer group, with more mental toughness. This year's team is better built for NCAA Tournament play, and I will be surprised if we have a first round letdown like that Purnell team did (like all of Purnell's team did, actually).

Need to see where this team ends up ... too soon to make

such comparisons with so much left in the season.

I'll say this ... we have never had a group of shooter / scorers like we have this year.

Never.

This team "has the chance" to end up the best ever. But, they still have to finish strong for that to happen.

Re: 07-08 ... KC Rivers was a great shooter, but he wasn't that great of a ball handler. He had to spot up to get his shot.

Terrence Oglesby was a tremendous pure shooter, but he also was no ball handler and what's more he was terrible defensively and was a hot head to boot.

Demontez Stitt was a fine all-around guard who played good defense, could shoot well and drive the basket, but he was not as good of a three-point shooter as any of Reed, Mitchell, or Devoe.

Cliff Hammonds was another fine all around athlete as was James Mayes, but from what I've seen, all our guards this year are better than Hammonds and I'm not sure at all that I wouldn't rather have Elijah Thomas than James Mayes overall. If Grantham were still healthy, I know I'd take him over Mayes.

Trevor Booker was a force inside, but he was just as foul prone as any big man we've ever had and he tended to get upset when a foul wasn't called and neglect to get back on defense when the fast break went the other way.

Once again ... this year's team is still trying to finish strong and at this point anything could happen, but they have the legitimate, high-level guard play that is so crucial to winning games.
