the Truth about Death Valley

Dec 24, 2012, 1:27 PM

I think most know this, but Clemson was given the name "Death Valley" by the former Presbiterian (don't know how to spell that) Head Coach. LSU's stadium was originally called "Deaf Valley" because it was loud. At some point and journalists at some point mistakenly heard this as "Death Valley", thus was born the second death valley. Clemson is the original.

Carolina actually was the first "USC". The way I look at it, all that matters is how the home team refers to themselves or their stadium. Win or lose, fans of the team are always going to refer to themselves or their stadium what they want. It's really making a mountain out of a molehill to say this or that is the real blah, blah, blah.

I didn't say it really matters

All I stated are the facts in response to the original post. Who cares about SCar.

Most people I know are fine with calling LSU's stadium 'Tiger Stadium'. The only people that seem to feel strongly about it are Clemson fans.

the Truth about Death Valley

. . . meant to say "a few reporters and journalists at some point mistakenly heard "Deaf Valley" as "Death Valley" and wrote it as such. LSU was tagged "Death Valley" by a mistake.

Actually, it was CBS sports in 1987. They did a game at

LSU a few weeks after CBS had done the Clemson/UGA in Clemson. During the Clemson game CBS made a big production about our stadium being called Death Valley, then later at Baton Rouge one of the announcers, I believe it was Jim Nance (not certain) said "....here we are at LSU's version of Death Valley". Again, incorrectly taken from their moniker "Deaf Valley".
