Lots of teeth gnashing going on about if this and if that re the Wake game. Would the UGA, Bana, Ohio State fans be as worried and concerned as some here are? Seems like we want the team to be champions but fans don’t act the same way. It’s Wake! Let’s be elite!

Clemson has a cautious fan base.
Clemson had a cautious fan base when the team played in 4 out of 5 national championships.
Since the team showed cracks in the armor last season, the fan base has grown to be cautious about more opponents.
Remove the Wake Forest name and it's not surprising for a team that has yet to play a ranked opponent would be a little cautious about the biggest matchup to date of the season.

Games with Wake Forest are always good and not because the Tigers usually win. As an opposing fan you will be treated with respect by their fan base. I have lived within an hour of Wake Forest since 1964 and have attended many events there. I cannot recall a single incident where I was not treated fairly. I do vividly remember my friends giving me a real hard time over the band playing Dixie non stop at the old Bowman Gray Stadium ... but that was in fun!,
If you can get away tomorrow make this trip up I85 and support the team. This really is a pivotal game for the Tigers. Next Saturday, in the valley will be a war and a much different kind of fan base will swarm our campus. Big Game Saturday at Groves Stadium. Be There.

Maybe based on the fact that we have one of if not the best defense in the country when healthy.
If the offense could start clicking we can beat anybody.

based on our overall talent level.
I’m disappointed in their play thus far, but I realize we’re going with injuries as the reason why.
Tomorrow will be a big test of that theory.

it's struggling b/c there are limitations with WRs, Oline, & playcalling/offensive identity that are holding us back..........they are what they are.

Missing out on a conference championship, or even a division title, last year, as well as continuance this year of many of the issues that plagued us last year, makes it difficult to argue that we are currently elite.
I would feel better about us returning to elite status quickly if Dabo had gone out and hired top coaches to be our offensive coordinator and defensive coordinator. It's hard to get excited about staff promotions to fill those coordinator positions, especially since the two co-DCs have never been coordinators and our OC has limited OC experience and only at a lower level of football.

so if that is the criteria for being "elite", then my answer is yes.
That said, I fully acknowledge that Clemson didn't always play like an elite team last year and, at times, this year as well.
The answer will vary based on the definition of "elite" being used.

So much crying this season. I've never felt like we were going to lose to Wake and I don't this week either. I think we beat them by double digits and win going a way 45 - 23. They can't stop the run, they can't stop the pass rush.
I'm pretty sure we get the entire d line back for this game and pummel the twisted ######## all afternoon.

Clemson isn’t elite. They have a game coming up tomorrow that will help them become elite. That is why you need to be in Winston tomorrow before noon!
The talking heads don’t believe the Tigers are elite because they don’t have a Lawrence or Watson or Boyd. I tend to agree with that.
Dabo is trying to make one and he has a lot to work with this season.
This could well be a make or break game early in the year. See you saturday

the Playcalling that Lawrence/Watson/Boyd had 2011-2018
and to a lesser extent the Oline that Lawrence/Watson/Boyd had 2011-2018 (we've never been "great" on the oline)
and no I'm not saying that DJ is a Lawrence or Watson or even Boyd, but so far this year he's been MUCH better than last year....not perfect, but MUCH better.........the biggest missing ingredients right now are the ones mentioned above.

No, we're not elite at the moment. I thought we had an elite defense and a very, very good special teams unit. We might still have that, but I'm not sure after the last couple weeks, since we're ranked #36 defensively after playing an FCS school, the #122 offense, and the #113 offense. #36 is the worst ranking for our defense since 2012, though I'm really hoping our injuries and playing down to competition is the reason, and they'll step it up against real teams. Offensively, we have a very mediocre, vanilla offense. We've had one of the weakest schedules in the country but are ranked #62 in offense, right at the 50th percentile. That's why you see concern.
Those other teams don't have the same cause for concern:
Ohio State is the #1 offense and #22 defense. UGA is the #6 offense and #1 defense. Alabama is the #24 offense and #11 defense. These teams are all top 25 in both categories. Our starters have played the most of any of those teams, against the weakest competition, and we're not top 25 in either stat.
I actually do think there is cause for optimism. Our schedule is horrible this year. Wake is our best opponent, and isn't that good. It gives us a chance to build experience, cohesion, and confidence before the end of the season. 1. If our defense plays like a top 5 unit, 2. our offensive line plays like they should be able to (so far, our biggest accomplishment is Putnam bullying a 243 pound defensive tackle from Louisiana Tech); and 3. our offensive playcalling focuses on the personnel we have, rather than making the slowest QB in the ACC a scrambler and doing 50/50 balls to guys without the best hands, then I think we can become elite. But no, we're not elite right now.

don’t deserve consideration for playoffs. I agree that you should focus and respect all opponents, but if we are as good as we claim to be, you take care of teams like Wake with no issue. NEXT!

1981-1983 could have been elite but we were placed on probation.
Otherwise, we are a very solid program, in the upper echelon, but not quite blue blood or elite historically.
I think what you see is natural anxiety following last season and not wanting to see our program slip.
We hope 2021 was a blip, not a slip.
