Clemson Holds 36 Hole Lead at Palmetto Intercollegiate

Mar 8, 2021, 7:57 PM

Aiken, S.C—Jacob Bridgeman and William Nottingham became the first duo in Clemson history to shoot 64 or better in the same round, to lead Clemson to the 36-hole lead at the Palmetto Intercollegiate at the Palmetto Golf Club in Aiken, SC. The 15 teams played 36 holes Monday in perfect conditions, and will finish the tournament with 18 holes on Tuesday.

Clemson, who stands at 20-under-par 540 after two rounds, has a four-shot lead over UNC-Wilmington and eight shots over Furman. Clemson is attempting to win this tournament for the fifth time in its last eight appearances and give Larry Penley an 80th career tournament victory.

Individually, Bridgeman has the 36-hole lead with rounds of 64-67 for a nine-under par 131. The defending champion, Bridgeman has a one-shot lead over Reynolds Lambert of Furman. Nottingham, who had just one bogey in his 36 holes, is in a tie for fourth at 134. Nottingham finished a career best third place here last year.

Kyle Cottam is a third Tiger in the top 10 after rounds of 69-68 for a 137 total, three under par and stands in seventh place. Zack Gordan made four birdies in his last seven holes to finish with a second round 68 and is in a tie for 14th place at 139. Colby Patton had a second round 69 and is at 146, good enough for 37th entering the final round.

Clemson held a nine-shot lead after the first round thanks to the 64s by Nottingham and Bridgeman. Cottam also shot in the 60s with a 69, while Zack Gordon had an opening round 71 and Colby Patton a 77.

Bridgeman and Nottingham got off to mediocre starts as the former was one-over-par for his first nine holes, and the latter was even for his first eight. But, they both exploded on the back nine. At one stretch Bridgeman made birdie on five straight holes and Nottingham birdied four out of five.

Bridgeman played the front nine in one-over-par 35, then tied the Clemson nine-hole record with a seven-under-par 29 on the back. He had seven birdies and two pars on that nine.

The record he tied is also held by Nottingham, who had a 29 on the way to a Clemson record 62 as a freshman at the Wolfpack Spring Open in Raleigh, NC on April 14, 2017, his freshman year. In today’s first round, Nottingham had a bogey free 64 that featured a 34 on the front and a 30 on the back.

Both players made birdie on their final hole of the first round to shoot 64. Nottingham made a 15-foot uphill putt on the first hole, then minutes later Bridgeman made a down-hill 12 footer on 18. The tournament was played with a shotgun format so players began their rounds on different holes.

Clemson shot a 12-under-par 268 in the first round to take a nine shot lead over Furman and UNC-Wilmington. It was the low round of the year for the Clemson team.

Go Tigers! Thanks for the write up. Usually don't get much on our Tiger golfers. Oh wouldn't it be wonderful to get LP a few more championships.

Need to compete in match play this year after that painful miss 2 years ago. Seems odd to say 2 years. Would love to give him an ACC title and send him out with another natty.

Good to see Zack live up to his potential. What's skeeta say, hit em crisp and straight... We'll be following you on golfstats since we can't cheer you on in person.

Morning Tony. Are they allowing anyone on the course to follow the teams? Tia

Don't forget to follow our Tigers on golfstats today. Teams off to an early rough start. Course must be playing a little tougher today... William off to a shaky start. Double bogey, bogey. Roughly 4-5 holes in and tigers slipped a shot. Still clinging to a 3 shot lead.
