Clemson getting terrible ACC officiating this year

Oct 5, 2021, 9:07 PM

Think about the bad calls we got in the NCState and BC games The pass interference against us in the end zone could have cost us that game If that call is not made it is 4th and 2 for the pack with us being up by a score

Indeed! I have not watched any other ACC games, but it has

Oct 5, 2021, 9:10 PM

been a disaster in Clemson games for sure.

Whine on, but with better and smarter execution we are 5-0.

Amen. I haven’t seen a single official miss an open receiver by 10 yards all year!

what does that have to do with the post? Refs have been pretty bad this year, across the ACC. We just get the worst calls at the worst time or no calls on obvious infractions...

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

There Have been several extremely sketchy calls that ...

... certainly having Trevor Lawrence and Travis Etienne would have covered for through better play execution.

Great teams overcome bad calls.

We are not a team this year that can overcome blatant mis-calls.

Re: There Have been several extremely sketchy calls that ...

Exactly. The bad calls this year are much more obvious because we can not overcome them with our offense

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I agree with the better execution part, but

Oct 5, 2021, 11:13 PM [ in reply to Re: Clemson getting terrible ACC officiating this year ]

you can't deny there have been some really bad calls and more than we've seen.

The fact that other teams have calls that went our way to complain about does not make the officiating better. The non offsides call for Booth would have given BC a first down. We laugh about it, but I imagine that BC is pissed. The officiating has been just putrid and the ACC needs to do something about it.

The no call face mask of DJU on the play that Shipley got hurt

Oct 5, 2021, 10:16 PM

sticks out in my mind.
Just the way our D-line gets held ticks me off. I mean they aren’t even trying to make it not look like holding with the straight up tackling, hands to the face, and the patented “pull them down on top of me as I get pancaked” technique we’ve seen.

One reason for the poor officiating from ACC officials at least in my opinion is because many of today’s official’s were train by the infamous Ron Cherry. Cherry I believe is still a consultant with the ACC. He is one of the worst official’s I have seen over the year’s.

IMO Ron Cherry always had a target on Clemson’s back. I have often wondered just how many Clemson games where RC was an official possibly had the outcome changed because of his inept officiating skills.

I believe that replay reviews have hurt the quality of on field officiating. When the replay official’s are constantly reversing calls made by official’s on the field it has to affect how they call a game. It seems many of today’s official’s seem to be more hesitate to throw a flag and make the call for fear of having their call overturned.

I would be in favor of limited use of replay reviews or enforce a time limits forcing the official’s to make a call without reviewing an obvious play for 10 minutes.

Also, I believe fewer PI and offensive line holding calls are being called. IMO UGA, NC State and BC got away with several offensive holding calls and PI calls. In Saturday’s game against BC I saw at least 3 Clemson defensive players who were basically tackled by the BC offense. The official’s missed several PI penalties by the BC defense to.

Then with all of the betting going on in college football in today’s game are their corrupt officials controlling the game. Each conference should audit their official’s at least once or twice during the season.

Just a diehard Clemson fans opinions and observation.

Well, I'm gonna say it again. I do this about once a year.

Never, in the history of TigerNet, has there been one single post saying - Wow, we kinda got lucky today, the calls went our way. Never. Ever. Doesn't matter which sport. In baseball, the ump is always against us on balls & strikes. Same in basketball with fouls. Every. Single. Game. In. Every. Sport. The refs screwed us, for the 10,000th game in a row. You gotta admit, it's an incredible streak.

There were a couple times Sat night when I said out loud - Dang, I'd be pissed if I was the BC coach. They missed some calls both ways, as they always do. And I haven't checked, but I'd almost be willing to bet our opponents have had more penalties this year than we have. Maybe I'll check later...

OK, so I did check. Our opponents are getting screwed by the refs.

Oct 6, 2021, 8:27 AM

They have 51 total penalties, and we only have 39. Home cooking? ACC refs protecting the only ACC team that has a chance to be elite? I don't know... LOL.

its nit the calls, its the timing of the calls and the no calls that are killers... having three linemen move before a snap because of crowd noise is not the same as calling holding in OT on a defensive back...

Every team, and I mean every team in every game in every conference gets calls that go in their favor and gets calls that goes against them It's football, it's human nature.
That pass interference was not pass interference because it wasn't called. And it was just one of those 47 plays we ran to double the number of plays they ran.
No, we lost that game because we could not put them away.
But if it makes you feel any better they missed a field goal that would have won it in regulation.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

To be fair...

Oct 6, 2021, 7:48 AM

We did get a sack on 3rd while Booth was running in of the XT during the snap and BC was driving the ball downfield

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: To be fair...

Oct 6, 2021, 8:10 AM

The PI calls are significant but have gone somewhat both ways. The holding calls seem to be loaded against us. At least 4-5 pull down holds were not called. That was a big reason BC was effective in the passing game. One of my complaints is the refs should at least get the explanation right. It was NOT Targeting a Defenseless Player Sat and against NC St it was NOT PI on Turner!

XT was lined up off the ball - I've watched

Oct 6, 2021, 10:52 AM [ in reply to To be fair... ]

the replay, I think this was a an ok no-call. As strange as it seems, it appears Booth is on our side when the ball starts moving. The announcers seemed to be making assumptions regarding XT being lined up on the ball as he clearly is off the ball. I wouldn't have been mad if they threw a flag there but hard to second guess the official when it looks on film like he may be good. The official doesn't care who is in front of who - he's just looking down the line to see who is crossing or moving prior to ball moving. Remember that there are 2 officials specifically watching for this - not just one like a lot of other parts of the game.

When your team isn't very good, you win or lose games based on officiating and turnovers.

When you are good, you don't notice the calls because you are up by 30.

We have benefitted from some bad/questionable calls.

We have not benefitted by having the refs let holding and defensive pass interference go.

The holding is nothing new. They just don't call it anymore.

If our receivers could get open then the non-called pass interference wouldn't matter.

In recent years we have been good enough to overcome the refs, but not this year.
