Clemson conference affiliation question

Aug 19, 2014, 4:08 PM

Clemson, along with several current SEC schools, was a charter member of the Southern Conference in 1921. Does anybody know if Clemson was extended an invitation to join the SEC when the conference formed in 1933?

the SEC was formed by a group of schools located south and west of the Appalachain Mountains including Georgia Tech and Tulane.

Yes, that's what the Wikipedia page says, but wasn't sure if that was factual.

I believe it was geographically based.***

With the way conferences are adding members, geographical names make ZERO sense anymore.

Yup, I think you're right... I wonder if the SEC even considered extending an invitation to Clemson in 1990. I'm assuming that they didn't even put the option on the table, thinking we would never leave the ACC.

The initial offers were to FSU and Texas...

Arkansas and lastly $CU were fall-back considerations

Heard when became apparent FSU wasnt joining SEC they felt

Clemson out to see if they were interested and the admin told them they were not interested.

Remember this was when Clemson was at our height in Football and we were more attractive than USuCk. But the administration had just fired Danny and was more into Academics than football so we turned them down. The SEC was not going to get turned down again since FSU had basically turned them down.

No official invite but had we wanted the invite we would have got it over USuCk back then.

This came from Dr. Ron Mullins who was a CE Professor at Miss St on the Faculty Athletic Advisory Board at the time and was a Clemson Alum. He served on the Conference expansion committee

The SEC also was a different beast back then

Doesn't say anything about invites, but this says that the split was mostly along geographical lines. The schools in VA, Maryland, and the Carolinas all stayed in the Southern until they split off into the ACC: http://www.saturdaydownsouth.com/2011/southeastern-conference-history/

Wikipedia has charts like that for almost every conference, I believe.
