Clemson Brand - Stronger than Ever!

Dec 9, 2021, 8:12 PM

Clemson’s brand is stronger than ever.

Yes, there are a lot of changes. Give me an example of a world class organization where “change” is not a major part of its existence. The time to be concerned is when there is no change – that’s when the organization is not relevant any longer.

Coach Venables was no doubt the most outstanding assistant coach in the country. For his hard work, he was rewarded with a job that, for him, represents the pinnacle of his career. I know all of Tiger Nation wishes him success. But even if it turns out not to be successful (there is always risk in every decision), he did what every man would do and provided for his family for generations to come.

If Coach Elliott does leave, I believe, if I counted correctly, he would be the 5th assistant under Coach Swinney to move to a head coaching job at a major university. If a coach has head coach aspirations, a stint under Coach Swinney obviously carries a huge amount of weight in qualifying for a head coaching role. And let’s not forget, Coach Venables is no longer the most outstanding assistant coach in college football. That role is now open and there is no reason Clemson cannot hire the next “best assistant coach in the country”.

Coach Swinney does face the biggest challenges of his career. He did not become what he is by making bad decisions and no doubt he will come through this time. I would imagine his phone has not stopped ringing and his electronic rolodex has been flying the past few days. Many, if not almost all, coaches would love the opportunity to work under him.

I believe it is healthy for the organization to change athletic directors every 8-10 years. Jobs like that need a new set of eyes else we miss a lot of opportunities. I hope that scheduling is a priority of the new AD – we need to take advantage of this new conference alliance and expand our out of conference football schedule beyond lower division South Carolina universities.

As far as recruits, there may be a few who will change their minds about Clemson. It is hard for anyone over say the age of 35 to understand the mentality of young men and women today relative to commitment. The fact is it is a different world, and it is not going to change. That does not mean it is wrong, it is simply different. Successful programs will adapt to the “what are you doing for me today” culture and thrive. Others will quickly fall by the wayside. I believe Clemson will quickly figure out how to manage all the parts (NIL, transfer portal, etc.) of this successfully.

Perhaps I see the world through “orange-colored” glasses, but I see a very bright future. Of course, there will be a few bumps – world-class does not mean problem free – but I believe they will be offset by many successes. As Coach Swinney says…"The best is yet to come”.

Go Tigers!!
