Clemson basketball: Expectations this season?

Nov 11, 2020, 7:00 AM

I’ve heard many pundits say this is top to bottom the most talented team Brad Brownell has ever had. Should the expectation be NCAA tournament (if we have one) or bust?

Much higher then the preseason poll. 13th really? Aren't we supposed to be good?

THIS TEAM WILL BE VERY GOOD IMO. NO MORE EXCUSES. RECRUITING HAS PICKED UP. WE HAVE A GOOD NUCLEUS BACK. THIS YEAR IS SH!T OR GET OFF THE POT.

I expect fan turnout to be about the same as last year.

much different look this year

Nov 11, 2020, 8:58 AM

this team will have so much more height than last season's... 3 guys 6'10" who should see time on the court; plus 6'8" O-Max Prosper.

we shouldn't see Simms and 4 guards on the court nearly as often this season

i think this team can count on solid guard play.

how this season goes may well be determined by how the new big kids, Hall, Kidd, and Prosper perform - and if Baehre can be an asset

will be very interesting to see the starting 5...

Idk our first 7 AcC games are brutal. We could easily start off 2-5 in the league while playing good ball.

Seems like we hear that every year.

and then something goes wrong and we end up below the bubble.

I'll believe it when I see it.

It's the deepest team we've had under Brownell.

Nov 18, 2020, 3:56 PM

We can go 10 deep, possibly 12 deep, assuming we stay healthy. We have had some injuries this offseason, none that will keep guys out of the lineup but definitely significant enough to sideline some players. Most notably, Chase Hunter broke a finger and missed about 6 weeks, and Jonathan Baehre has continued knee issues. Both should be ready to go when we face Mississippi State a week from today.

The keys for us, especially early in the year, are the following:

-How quickly can we settle in on a rotation? Who starts and who gets the bulk of the minutes off the bench? Or do we see a lot of the backup minutes split over 5-7 guys?
-We have a lot of talent in both the backcourt and frontcourt, but a lot of those are new faces. How quickly do new guys get up to speed?
-In the backcourt, Chase Hunter and Nick Honor were on the team last year, but Hunter was injured most of the season and Honor redshirted. How will that affect minutes that Dawes and Trapp get? How does Heminway, arguably our best shooter, fit into the rotation?
-In the frontcourt, Simms is back and can play several frontline positions, but where do some of the new guys fit in? P.J. Hall and Lynn Kidd are both talented, but new to the college game. How quickly can they adjust to the speed and physicality of the game? Olivier Maxence-Prosper is a great athlete, and at 6'8" is very versatile. As with the others, how quickly can he begin to contribute on a somewhat consistent basis? How many quality minutes can Jonathan Baehre give us? Where does Hunter Tyson fit in? He's a streaky shooter, but a good shooter, who isn't quite as athletic as some of the others but he is seasoned in comparison. Brownell has a lot of options here.
-How will our team do playing in front of sparse crowds, at home and on the road? Will this be ad disadvantage at home and an advantage on the road? Or will it not matter? I realize that this kind of thing shouldn't matter, but of course it will - these guys are human and this is an unnatural setting for competition.
-Finally, and probably most importantly, how might our plans be derailed by COVID? This is the real wild card. Will players on our team get COVID, and if so, how does that impact their ability to play? If it's a young player, how will that impact his progress? Will we be forced to cancel games entirely? Or will COVID affect an opponent so much that the game will be postponed or canceled? Our players are doing a great job of being responsible, but as we know, COVID can infiltrate a team despite everyone's best efforts. Let's hope our team can avoid it.

As others have mentioned, our talent level is improved. This is our deepest team, and has the potential to be our most talented team depending on player development this year. How well they come together - and how quickly they come together - will be key, as will staying healthy. If we can do that, I think we will be very pleased with our season, which should result in a trip to the NCAA Tournament in Indianapolis.

I think we will be equal to or slightly better than the Sweet 16 team minus Grantham. That team with Grantham probably could have gone to the Elite 8. This year is about how quickly new guys adjust to the speed and physicality of college basketball especially the bigs. The low attended arenas would seem to be a slight advantage for road games.

I’m interested to see how Heminway has matured physically. I like his quiet grit and would love to see him be able to add some mid-range shifty play.
