Clemson and the Heisman Trophy

Sep 16, 2019, 3:12 PM

When CJ Spiller was snubbed for an invite to NYC and the Heisman I was pretty pissed. When Deshuan lost it (twice), I was annoyed but not as much. I would've killed 10 years ago to have a player in the Race as much as Lawrence is now but I kind of don't care if we never win one and keep winning only Nattys.

I think Lawrence is deserving of a Heisman but I don't expect him to win (playing time, no stat padding, split votes, etc.) and it doesn't bother me one bit.

IMO the Trophy is still obviously the biggest award in CFB but it's a popularity contest now and has lost a lot of its cache.

Just to illustrate: can you name the last 10 National Champions without looking them up? Now name the last 10 Heisman Trophy Winners without looking them up.

Anyone disagree?

The Heisman winner is not always the best player as we all

know. It is more of a popularity contest. Please don't get me wrong if a Clemson player win it I will be very excited for him and our school but I just get into this Heisman thing that much anymore.

The Heisman Trophy is won and lost in September. That’s _

when teams play their toughest opponents. Thankfully great performance in November through January is discounted because those wins are meaningless.

There are a lot of opinions floating about,

but I have believed the award should not be tallied and given until after the season.

A Quarterback who led his team to the National Championship along with a record number of wins was passed for an admittedly talented player whose team faltered during the same season.

Why? Because the media selected their candidate pre-season, hyped him throughout, then presented him the award. I believed then, as I now do, that the Heisman Trust itself should evaluate and select the candidates, then vote after the season.

Kind of like how they (AP? UPI?) used to vote for the

National Champion before the bowl season. They quit doing that because it made no sense....

Seems pretty unfair that Deshaun Watson played 4 of the greatest games in CFB history in the 2015 and 2016 Playoffs and NONE of those games were considered by Heisman voters...

Completely agree. Giving it before the end of the season is akin to naming the "Player of the Game" in the 3rd Quarter.. I don't understand it at all.

Unfortunately, Jalen Hurts has already locked up the Heisman - the pundits are fawning all over him and all the adversities he's faced. He seems like a good kid and I like JH, but jumping on the bandwagon and locking up the race 1/8 of the way through the season seems moronic.. but then again, it's why the Heisman has lost luster it used to have.

Bra, Jalen hurts gonna win it this year. Dude gonna have 3500 yd passing and 1500 yds rushing. In Lincoln Riley’s system he will put up video game numbers.

Too bad the defenses are not as good as in video games!***
