Clemson and NIL recruiting leverage ...

Jul 8, 2021, 11:59 AM

Here’s a new trend ...

Watch for which big-time recruits suddenly have a deluge of NIL merchandise purchased as soon as they sign, and you’ll know which school p(s) used wealthy alums to promise payment to the recruit through what has become “legal cheating”.

Everything that has been happening under the table is now going to happen out in the open and there’s very little that Clemson can do to counter this tremendous leverage.

Clemson simply does not have enough alums with deep pockets to compete in this new “legal cheating” environment.

It’s going to stink!

I've got a let's wait & see attitude, so I'm

not gonna argue with you. Though, I do agree about that there's not enough alums with deep pockets.

We can't see into the future, so I don't know if this NIL thing is gonna stink or not. I'll still be pulling for The Tigers though!

Go Tigers AND Stay Well Clemson Nation!

What Clemson is about. We are doing it our way with the NIL center. Dabo and Venables and staff and winning is still the draw. Clemson under Dabo has always tried to recruit who fits for Clemson. It’s why our offer list is so small. The dudes who just go for the money weren’t coming here most likely anyway

It was fun while it lasted. I hope college football ratings sink so they realize how they've messed up

We have a lot of wealthy alumni. Who do you think

Jul 8, 2021, 1:02 PM

helped Clemson build the new player facility a few years ago, the girls softball field, and the soon to be new video screen in the east endzone.

A lot of our alums are engineers and scientist. Many alums over time have stood up their own companies, myself included.

I appreciate your loyalty and optimism, but the type of wealth you describe is minuscule compared to the money pushing schools like Oregon, Texas, Texas A&M ... just to name a few.

We have no billionaires among our alums. And #### few multi-millionaires.

The field will in no way be level down the road.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

We don't need billionaires, we have more than a "few"

Jul 8, 2021, 4:14 PM

millionares. Dabo told a story recently about asking an alum for $25 million to help the cost of the football facility. Well, that was not a problem from that alum.

Texas and Stanford have endowments of $30B. Ours is $770M. We aren’t even in the same ballpark as most of the big boys. With no medical school or law school, we don’t have near the wealthy alumni that many schools enjoy. Sorry, Clemson is closer the projects than Rodeo drive.

Nobody is going to be spending $500 million for a yearly NIL

Jul 8, 2021, 4:42 PM [ in reply to Re: We have a lot of wealthy alumni. Who do you think ]

Everyone was going crazy over the $540K from the Miami businessman to pay 90 players $500 per month for 12 months. That type of expenditure is nothing for an engineering company earning $3-4M in profits each year. The unknown is how taxes would be handled for funds going toward the NIL.

Personally, I expect to see lower levels of funding, but brought together by many statewide companies beyond just companies owned by Clemson alumni. The firms logo could be placed on a shirt near a Clemson Tiger Paw or some other Clemson reference i.e. player position/name.

You can be a fan or a donor without being an alumnus

Jul 8, 2021, 1:20 PM

And who said that only alumni/fans/donors can jump on the NIL train?

You miss the point.

Of course you can buy a T-shirt or a hat. Anyone can.

But can you promise a recruit that you will buy 1,000 T-shirts and 5,000 hats as soon as they sign with your school.

Look, you don't know anymore than the rest of us

Jul 8, 2021, 5:13 PM

on the details of the NIL.

I plan to spend some time tonight reading through as much detail that is available.

Amen, I just made the same comment to Bug Eye. Nowhere

Jul 8, 2021, 5:10 PM [ in reply to You can be a fan or a donor without being an alumnus ]

does it say it has to be only Clemson alumni supporting the Clemson players NIL.

I wish I could be as optimistic or as naive as you guys.

Jul 8, 2021, 5:30 PM

Alum, fan, or just an interested party ... call’em what you want.

Clemson just doesn’t have as many as a great many other programs.

It will make a difference down the road.

NIL will be the out for Dabo to go back to Bama

Didn’t think he would leave but now not so sure if NIL doesn’t go well for CU. However he recruits a different kind of kid and maybe he can make it work. Just got to trust him
