Clemson and National Anthem

Oct 10, 2016, 10:50 AM

I was at the BC game Friday night sitting next to a BC fan. When the National Anthem was sung, she was making loud comments (assuming for my benefit) that it was appalling and disrespectful that the Clemson team was not on the field and only entered later. BC players were on the field. I live outside of Boston but am a huge Clemson fan but only get down to Clemson about once a year to see a game so I didn't know how to respond. I know a few weeks back when Dabo answered the question about the protests that he commented that they are not on the field for the Nation Anthem. Is that because of the run down the hill? If so, why don't they come out for the Anthem at away games. I know how patriotic this team and its fans are and I was at a loss for words and wished I had a reason to give her to shut her up! She continued to be so loud and obnoxious that my husband and I moved seats.....seeing that there were so many available! Go Tigers!

I'm not sure about away games, but I do know it is because of the hill that we are not on the field at home games.

One thing that a BC fan pointed out to me was in between the third and fourth quarter, or whenever they had that group on the field singing America, the Beautiful, Jadar Johnson had his fist in the air. I was sitting right in the endzone where this was happening and was trying to believe that he had 4 fingers up for fourth quarter or something, but I'm pretty sure it was a fist.

Anyone else see that?

Most college teams don't come out of the locker rooms until

Oct 10, 2016, 10:56 AM

all the pre-game stuff is done. In many instances they try to come out at the same time as the other team. And then they kickoff.

Thanks. I thought maybe that was the case. I wonder if BC was only out because it was the Red Bandana game?

The band is still on the field...rather they stay in the locker room for pregame talk if they can't warm up and have to stand around.

National anthem, pledge, alma mater and God Bless America

Oct 10, 2016, 11:25 AM

are all like 20-25 minutes before kickoff. Once the band is done, then the hype for the hill kicks in and the team usually pulls around with like 5-10 minutes until kickoff. The visiting team has never been out there for national anthem, because all the band stuff occurs right when they go into the locker room before the game. I'm under the impression the only time teams aren't present for the national anthem are during college football games, as all other collegiate sports and professional sports the teams are out there. Must've been a special occasion or just something unique to BC.

I can't remember any team out for the anthem

Oct 10, 2016, 11:59 AM

Other than bowl games, I can't think of any time I've seen a team on the field for the national anthem either at Clemson or any of the other home venues I've been to.

I don't think any school does more "America" pregame than Clemson, the pledge, the invocation, God Bless America and the Anthem. 82,000 respectful fans. I have seen the Captains on the field (they don't run down the hill) and they have alway stood respectfully as far as I can tell. As for Johnson, I can't imagine Dabo putting up with anything that would cause a distraction so I doubt it was a fist... thats just not the DNA of Clemson and why I am such a huge fan of the program.

What do you say? You say nothing!

I can't recall teams ever being on the field during the anthem. And if she was that obnoxious about it, she was just getting her anger out of her system in anticipation of what was about to happen.

Seriously, that's ridiculous. Ignore her.
