Clemson admissions

Feb 16, 2016, 4:35 PM

A random South Carolina high school student applying to Clemson has the following high school transcript;

GPA - 4.2 with numerous AP classes

Class rank - 95 out of 500

SAT - 1270

Smart student ... the issue is grade inflation

Feb 16, 2016, 6:22 PM [ in reply to As a side note, that same student.... ]

At most public schools, most take AP and most make an A. Same with many Catholic schools. There is greater disparity in SAT/ACT scores because the teacher cannot artificially inflate the SAT/ACT score because the student tries hard, is cute, asks a lot of questions, smiles a lot or brings them an apple.

Re: Smart student ... the issue is grade inflation

Feb 16, 2016, 8:07 PM

I thought that was odd too. I don't understand how a student can have a 4.2 gpa but nearly miss the top 25 percentile of graduating class and a 1270 SAT. Back when I was in HS kids that were getting those kind of grades were getting 1500+ on SAT and in the top 5% of class. Sounds like the school is boosting grades.

1270 is still a really good score land this sounds like a very good student and I would think this gets an admission to Clemson.

Feb 16, 2016, 8:20 PM [ in reply to Re: Smart student ... the issue is grade inflation ]

More and more honors and AP classes. When I was in high school an A in honors was a 5.0, and A in AP classes were 6.0 the first semester, and 5.0 the second semester (not sure why of that). The valedictorians were always approaching or even slightly above 5.0 weighted GPA.

So I'm sure it is partly grade inflation, but also there are more honors and AP classes available.

Re: Clemson admissions

Feb 16, 2016, 4:42 PM

As a former Clemson tour guide and recent graduate, I'd say that student should be admitted to Clemson. However, some other factors come into play, like does the student have any family that went to Clemson previously or any other ties to the school?

That SAT score is above average I believe, or at least very close to average, and the AP classes help as well. Top 20% of their class, with a good GPA.

Especially considering they're an in state applicant, they should be fine. Clemson is much more competitive for out of state students, so as an in state student I would think they would be admitted. However, it's never a guarantee and the school is becoming increasingly more and more competitive.

I would say, "In."

Re: Applied under Communications***

Feb 16, 2016, 8:23 PM

Comm is hard to get into. Limited space in the classes. My son had to spend freshman and sophomore year in other majors, Political Science and Psychology, before finally getting into Comm this year. He also did bridge.

Make sure he takes the time to meet the Comm professors and advisors at CU even while at Bridge to coordinate the classes he should take and he should consider the Comm study abroad programs after finishing his Bridhe year.

It's really too bad there is no place to fill in your IPTAY number on the CU application.

Feb 17, 2016, 8:16 AM [ in reply to I thought his application was a slam dunk.... ]

If I were the parents I would look at this as an opportunity for the child and as a positive. Ten years ago, this kid would probably be in but now Clemson is much harder to get into. This means that a Clemson degree will, all things being equal, be more valuable. Knowing that he or she had to go through the Bridge Program should be a motivating factor to do well because it tells the kid that the competition in those classes is tough. Also, generally in life, this little setback is minor and I believe that setbacks help harden the person if reacted to positively. Finally, I am sure Clemson did not mean to slight the family but it proves somewhat that they are doing an honest serious job in their admissions process which is what you want if you want the University to be excellent. If they chlld really wants to go there, he or she should go to Bridge with a chip on the shoulder nad crush it! Clemson is the best school in the state and hopefully being admitted with no strings to those lesser places will not convince this kid to give up on the dream.

Man that surprises me. I hope Clemson doesn't ever forget the people who made it what it is, that seems like a competitive, well rounded student with ties. I'm glad I went to Clemson when I did, as an out of state student it would be tough, don't think my dad or brother would get in today.

Fwiw, I don't think IPTAY giving does (or should) really matter in admissions. If family were big CU fund donors, then that might pull some sway. On the other hand, big IPTAY donor probably knows more names he can call favors to.

with 1270 on SAT, if he's in the top 10% of his graduating class he's probably in. Somewhere between 10% to 20% probably gets him a Bridge acceptance. Not in the top 20% or 25% probably denied. Being a legacy applicant would probably factor into the equation and having extra curricular activities would probably factor in as well. Being able to run a 4.40 40 probably helps a lot too.

Re: Clemson admissions

Feb 17, 2016, 8:46 AM

AP grading scale is up to 5.875 right? So with that said that's a low B GPA in HS.

Only top 20% Class Rank.

SAT very low based on newer scoring(out of 2400). I've read the national average is 1500. They did move back to 1600 for this year so if it's out of 1600 that's not bad.

Another factor is what major did this student apply for?

I know a "random" student that had to wait a semester(January enrollee) before enrolling for Architecture with a better "resume"

Top 5% of class of over 500 students.

Mid A GPA in Honors/AP courses.

1250 out of 1600 SAT (taken once after 9th grade year)

When did s/he apply? Early birds get a better chance in crowded majors. Most kids I know were getting their letters before the holidays, so if s/he is just getting it now, that could have something to do with it. Just knock out the "everyone has to take 'em" humanities or whatever classes while waiting for slots to open up in the desired major.

I have a question as I do not have kids

how is it possible to have above a 4.0 GPA?

A 4.0 is perfect, or at least used to be.
Has this changed? If so, then what is a perfect score now?

Honors and AP classes award more points

a 100 average in a grade level course is 4.0 but will be higher in an honors program.

Its a fair and good thing otherwise kids would be discouraged from taking harder courses. However, it is led to GPA inflation.

Clemson puts FAR more importance on class rank combined with the quality of the high school to remove the effects of GPA inflation within and between schools.

I know several kids with 5.0+ GPA's

If you take AP classes, and especially if you're in an IB (International Baccalaureate) program, you build up tons of extra points toward GPA.

The average SAT score composite at Clemson is a 1795. The 25th percentile SAT score is 1640, and the 75th percentile SAT score is 1950.

The average high school GPA of the admitted freshman class at Clemson University was 4.18 on the 4.0 scale indicating that primarily A students are accepted and ultimately attend.

Looks like the SAT got him. That and his major. When my son applied for Architecture he was told to also list "undeclared" as an optional major. He got in with a 1850 SAT, 4.85 GPA and 3rd in his class, but it was still iffy if he would get accepted.

This year they had 37,000 applications and 10,000 slots. That's a tough acceptance percentage. I believe that's the toughest in the state.
