Checking in after the NY Auto Show.

A few things before we get started.

1. "Port Imperial" sounds like where the Empire parks its Star Destroyers. Instead it's where you catch the ferry from Weehawken. (You'll remember Weehawken from the Hamilton/Burr duel.)

2. It was about 85 degrees in New York City. I see the girls walk by dressed in their summer clothes. I have to turn my head until my darkness goes.

3. I'm a big proponent for legalizing recreational cannabis. That said, all of Manhattan smells like Otto's jacket.

Ok, so anyway...

Got these pics of the new Mustang for bengaline.

A bit too many screens for my taste.

Audi and Porsche had their cars roped off. I guess they didn't want the unwashed proletariat soiling their ethereal machines. Honestly, it was ridiculous. Audi had an R8 on display, so I guess that made a little sense. Rubbed me wrong, though, especially because I wanted to get a closer look at the Macan. Their presence at the show was perfunctory.

They made a lot of noise over at the GT-R exhibit.

Then a new Z rolled up, which brought me joy.

A lot of people say this car is just a warmed over 370Z. As a former 370Z owner I can tell you... yeah, it's just a warmed over 370Z. I'm happy it exists, though.

I also checked out the Toyobaru twins. Really great little sports cars. If I were a younger man I'd own one.

Corvette Z06 and E-Ray.

Lamborghini Sterrato. The question "why?" comes to mind.

The Lotus Emira is the coolest new sports car in a long time, imo. Exotic styling, sub-$100k pricetag, and a manual transmission? Sign me up!

Subaru got a little carried away with their exhibit.

Back to the Future the musical. Sterilize the human race plz.

Lastly, I sat in an Alfa Romeo Giulia. I've been eyeing up a 2020+ Ti Sport with Harman Kardon audio and was curious to see how I'd fit in it. The answer is, like a ####### glove. The driving position is like a sports car cockpit and the seats are very well bolstered. Back seat space was even tighter than I expected, but that doesn't affect my decision. It's definitely on the short list.

Got a shot of the USS Intrepid on my way back to the Garden State. If you right click any of these pics and paste the link in another tab, you can see a full(er) size image.

That Lambo looks like it rolled through the Subaru

Exhibit and they gave it the Wilderness trim.

But any shots of the Toyota/Subaru collabs, or what Subaru brought? I'm hoping they go back to their boxy roots sooner or later. The rounded lines of late are sinfully ugly. The WRX was looking like an ugly pig for the longest time.

Also was Fisker there? The Ocean intrigues me.

I saw a Fisker, but it was that odd sedan.

I was like

I guess they're making new ones? If the SUV was there, I missed it.

Unfortunately, no additional pics from Subaru. I heard about the terrible wheel well cladding on the WRX and it does not look better in person.

The GR86/BRZ are exactly as cool as I expected. If I weren't having a reverse mid-life crisis (in which I suddenly don't want a sports car), they'd be on the short list. The Z has a power advantage and that's about it.

I almost had my wife sold on a BRZ until

She saw one parked and looked at the back seat. For the best though because I ended up selling the IS350 because the back seat was nearly too small for the infant car seat.

BRZ's are great but I just don't like

I visited about twenty years ago.

Really cool experience and they had a submarine parked next door. It was amazing to get up close to an SR-71 Blackbird. Very curious what's covered up on the bow right now.

A few years ago they tried towing it out of the Hudson and I think the plan was to relocate it somewhere else, but it kept getting stuck and they had to give up. I was so glad it didn't work out!

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

y'ever gone to Molos over there??

Negative, but the area was really nice.

Normally I dislike new construction, but the whole waterfront looks like a swell place to live or just walk around. I had to rush home to release the hounds, otherwise I would've explored.

Is that a sweet Skyline above the new GT-R?

3

Apr 13, 2023, 7:46 PM

Left hand drive I hope? Ungh.

The one on top was OG.

2

Apr 13, 2023, 7:56 PM

The one underneath and another (Nismo maybe) were the latest models.

Starting to see lots of the originals on the road recently since they’re over 25 years old.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

In fairness, THIS is the OG

2

Apr 14, 2023, 3:23 PM

(but I think there were even two generations of Skyline before it, but I think this was the first GT-R that got it rolling)

Caught that ferry from Weehawken several times.

Parking there not too expensive.

2

It’s such a shitttty car. It may have the least sound deadening of any car currently made, but they’re smart enough to distract you with the constant driveline vibrations.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-20yr.jpgringofhonor-obed.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Cool pics.

Mustang - Nope

Lotus - Yep

Was doing some work up at the corvette museum this week and saw a couple 70th anniversary Z06’s. Me likey. They are how all c8’s should look.

Seriously looking at an Alfa? There’s better ways to make friends than forming a close, personal relationship with an Alfa Romeo service advisor.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-20yr.jpgringofhonor-obed.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Apparently the 4 cylinder is more reliable than the Quadro.

1

Apr 14, 2023, 7:46 PM

But still, it’s an Italian car so it’s a bit of a dice roll. I only do about 5k miles a year and have no commute, so reliability isn’t a top priority.

That thing looks like it classes with some of the older Porches and Ferrari, Enzo class maybe.
