Is Dabo hiring to many past players as coaches?

Nov 19, 2021, 10:28 AM

I hate to say it, but I think it's getting to be way to much and starting to have an effect on actual coaching. Guys like Chad Morris and Coach V weren't Clemson guys, but they got/getting the job done. I wish Dabo would bring in more football minds like that rather than just another Clemson Alumni. The OC position could really use it, because its pretty apparent without all world talent to make the current OC look better than he is, there's not alot that will change. Sure we have to recruit, but we saw bad play calling even with TL and TE and those Wr's, they were just able to mask alot of it....just like Rencher just said. Just my opinion

My fav narrative is the “talent” covered up the coaches

Nov 19, 2021, 10:43 AM

bit. Or is it that the current players just aren’t quite there yet?

Our “fans” think Tony should have converted to the gD wishbone this year.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

it DOES happen....

Nov 19, 2021, 10:49 AM

it happened in 2009 w/ Jacoby & spiller being Napier's security blanket.

In order to SUSTAIN success year in and year out you can't get complacent or "lazy" in your playcalling just because you have more talent than your opponent.

I think a little bit of that set in when we had DW4 and TL and all the other WRs..........the offense each year has got further and further away from what morris brought in, mainly b/c we didn't NEED it in the ACC. I think you started to see the cracks in the offensive foundation vs LSU in 2019, and continued the following year vs Ohio State.

This staff needs some "fresh eyes" and ideas............not saying any particular coach should be fired, but an infusion of some different philosophies and ideas wouldn't be a BAD thing.

Execution. Simple.

I find it interesting that he picked 2010, the next worst year in recent memory for a Clemson QB underperforming his talent, as a reference to show an OC getting complacent with playcalling duties.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

that's part of it this year for sure......but..........

Nov 19, 2021, 11:16 AM [ in reply to Execution. Simple. ]

go back and watch the 2019 LSU game. That LSU defense was nationally ranked 30-40th in the country and we scored 25 points on them with the future #1 NFL overall pick AND with a top 3 RB in the country.........along with solid WRs.

fast forward to Ohio State last year.....Ohio State defense was in the 30-40th ranked nationally and we scored 28 points w/ the future #1 NFL overall pick AND a top 3 RB in the country.

and this year has been a complete offensive disaster and a perfect combination of Bad QB play, Bad Oline play, Bad WR play, questionable playcalling, & injuries.............coaches carry a big blame in this. If you want to lean on lack of execution that's fine........why is that? development? recruiting? lack of talent?......no matter how you slice it, that's on coaching.

HOPEFULLY Dabo makes the proper tweaks to be back at the top next year...........time will tell.

Re: that's part of it this year for sure......but..........

Nov 19, 2021, 11:24 AM

LSU had up to 6 starters out for multiple games that season prior to the playoffs.

Their best player on defense did not play for most of the season, but played against us. If you look at their NFL talent from the defense it was much better than 30-40.

Ohio St was a weird case as well. How can you put any validation into a 6 game schedule in terms of defensive or offensive rankings? It can be skewed so easily by 1 game.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

you can keep lying to yourself if you want.....that's ok.

Nov 19, 2021, 11:32 AM

we have scored 40, 35, 44 on MUCH better defenses............not to mention, LSU & Ohio State (2019/2020) had no problem scoring on our "REALLY GOOD DEFENSE"..........it's not too much to ask for a TOP offense to SCORE POINTS on top defenses.................tweaks need to be made or we'll get left behind.............HOPEFULLY dabo makes them.

Re: you can keep lying to yourself if you want.....that's ok.

Clemson did not have a really good defense in 2019 or 2020.

We had a huge dropoff in 2019 from our top 3 or 4 guys on defense to the rest of the talent. The almost complete abandonment of 4 down linemen that season should have been a huge clue. It wasn't some new scheme Venables was using. It was done out of necessity.

We were extremely young in 2020 and did not do enough to replace those 3 or 4 who left from the previous season. The talent was back on the upswing but it was not yet experienced. Evidence from 2 of our 3 biggest games of the season shows that to be true. Also in the ACC title game ND was having success offensively again and missed a FG and threw an INT that let us get our feet under us later in the game.

The offenses that put up those numbers for Clemson were much better offenses as well. The biggest difference was the production from the offensive lines. While Lawrence and ETN may have been more talented than Watson and Gallman, the rest of the skill players were superior for the scores you mentioned as well. A banged up Ross hurt us vs LSU and last year we had very few options left if a team took ETN out of the picture.

Interesting how these geniuses will recycle their “thoughts” on this over and over, with nothing but more idiotic comments added. I recently mentioned a new subject and 5 people called me a coo t for suggesting that K had his own nepotistic system at work at Puke.
I think the not great season has some regressing to the 1980s and wherever they were at the time - so most are thinking like infants thru 2nd grader minds…
Or there are 80% idiots on here. Not sure which…

And while we're at it, since none of this has ever been mentioned before, what's the deal with all of the coaches kids being on scholarship when none of them had any Division 1 or Power 5 offers coming out of high skewl !?!?!?

Inquiring minds want to know !!!!

Sometimes good things fall apart so better things can fall together.

Both of Venables kids had offers

Nov 19, 2021, 11:34 AM

would have had more had it not been a given they were coming to Clemson

I'm sure there is no convincing you that you are incorrect about playcalling, but what are your specific complaints about the other 3 alumni on the coaching staff?

I also think it's hilarious when people commend Chad Morris for a job well done while complaining that Elliott can't get it done without elite talent.

Chad Morris got to coach the greatest 3 year span of WRs in the history of Clemson football from 2011-2013. the 2014 group wasn't exactly terrible either.

He also had a future starting NFL running back for his first 2 seasons. He had to rely on 2 young RBs in 2014 when the offense struggled a little more. Sound familiar?

He also had the same record breaking QB to work with for his 1st 3 seasons. Then he was good with Watson and absolutely awful with Stoudt in his 4th season.

So where was all this great work Morris did without elite talent?

Honestly the same goes for Venables as well. Before he built incredible depth on Clemson's defense we still struggled a good bit in big games. We saw a repeat of that in 2019-20 when depth was a little down and we were young on defense.

I love the fact that Dabo and this program continue to pour into the lives of young people and provide them a pathway to a better future. That being said, its not without some risk given that unless the players have gone other places to experience other programs and ideas this is all they know. You can study other methods and practices all you want but unless you live it the outcome will not be the same. When the program has too much "likemindedness" then it risks becoming stale. Allow them to pour back in but bring experience and ideas with them. That would require they work under other coaches before they come home. Probably the best example of that idea at work is Bama. That system grows with every change, every new coach, and every recruiting class. GO TIGERS!!

Elliott coached at other schools prior to coaching at Clemson.

Streeter was an offensive coordinator at another school prior to coaching at Clemson.

Grisham and Spiller spent a good amount of time learning and experiencing other things with multiple teams in the NFL prior to coaching at Clemson.

Is your assumption that all of these guys sat on the couch until Dabo hired them as coaches?

I really don't understand all that fawning over Chad Morris. While he did bring in the HUNH offense, he was a reckless play caller and received ample, if not excessive, complaints here on TN. Our only consistency is to be inconsistent.
