Changes on offense....

Jan 3, 2016, 5:54 PM

So, when Chad left Dabo seemed adamant that our offense was the Clemson offense and we would not change. However, our two 2017 commits are both labeled "pocket passers" versus Deshaun and Bryant who are considered "dual threat". Are we planning on going a different direction with the offense in the next few years?

It's possible to coach athletes...

to develop and expand their skill set. What they are doing in high school isn't the final limit of what they will be able to do with excellent coaching like we have here at Clemson.

By the way, 4-star 2016 QB commit Zerrick Cooper is listed as a dual threat quarterback. So yeah.

No both qb's say that they can sling the ball but also view

themselves as Steve Young types that can run when needed. They like the role that Dabo and Streeter have told them they have a chance to play.

FWIW Tajh Boyd was a much better passer than runner.***

Great QB's are great

Deshaun did not really get recruited by UGA because he was "dual" threat. How'd that work out for Richt? I promise you, had Watson went to UGA, Richt would still have a job. The college championship game may actually be OU/UGA because UGA would probably have beaten Bama with DW4.

I'm good with whatever Dabo thinks will work best. He's earned it. Just curious if he see's a shift in mindset coming with what seems like an influx of defensive talent. Feels like Alabama's strategy has been dominant defense and a QB who can game manage. Just wondering if the success in recruiting and winning has changed the way we think a little.

Well if success is determined by the QB who can "game manage"...is there anyone better than DW4???

Re: Changes on offense....

I've been talking about this with some, even kind of relating it to our basketball program as a path I wish they would pursue.

Here's what I mean...

I don't necessarily like the word "gimmick" offense, because I don't believe that's what the HUNH-Spread is. It's virtually taking over CFB. However, I have seen us shift because as we've gotten the attention of recruits, our offense has gone from a few skill players, to 11 skill players essentially.

Now, we still tempo, we still "gimmick"...but MY LORD have we run the ball this year...right down people's throats. It's been a breath of fresh air and something we haven't been able to do before consistently.

(sidenote: if basketball could take a similar path we'd soon have players everywhere...but you gotta start somewhere, and roundball is a different animal).

I say that say this. I believe our offensive identity for Clemson Football is secure, but we're recruiting athletes on a level now that really leaves us open to do whatever we choose.

And that my friend, is a BEAUTIFUL THING.
