After Chanello’s

May 17, 2022, 2:08 PM

Most people I know that were in Clemson in the 70s and 80s will agree that Chanello’s was the best pizza. Since then, where did you get the next best pizza? For me it’s easy - Blue Mountain Pizza in Weaverville NC just north of Asheville. Fantastic pizza and they make their own ice cream which is very good too. They used to brew their own beer but the brewer opened his own microbrewery and now they just sell other local craft brews at BMP.

the best pizza I've ever had was in NYC/NJ/CT. The Study Hall did pile a bunch of meat on top of the pizza at least.

I've never had good pizza crust down South. They say it's the water.

There is really good pizza in Park Circle in North Charleston and it's called EVO. It is really good. The best pizza I have ever had was in New Jersey, but I can say that the vast majority of pizza places in NYC are average. There are great ones obviously, but people like myself expected them all to be good. They say the Mecca of great pizza is New Haven, CT. People go on vacation there just to eat the various pizza joints. I have never been to New Haven. I just learned about it from The Pizza SHow on Vice TV.

I've been to Pepe's and Sally's in New Haven but not to

May 17, 2022, 3:38 PM

Modern. I don't ever remember having pizza with bad crust in NYC, but have only been to 5 or 6 places mostly in the Village and Chelsea.

How is the crust at EVO? Because once again, anyone can pile a bunch of meat on top.

The crust is what makes the pizza at Blue Mountain Pizza so good. They also make garlic knots with the same dough and they used to make cinnamon knots for dessert. Not sure if they still have those but they were all from the same dough.

Re: After Chanello’s

The best pizza I ever had came from a place that doesn't exist anymore, unfortunately. My fiance drove me to Roanoke, VA to meet her relatives. While we were there, she took me to Ferro's Pizza. On the way there she warned me that it was rumored that it was a Mafia money laundering restaurant, but the pizza was wonderful. When we walked in, I noticed that the kitchen was separated from the dining area by a wall. We were seated at a table next to that wall. When the server brought our pizza to us, we noticed that there were several more ingredients than what we had ordered. When we pointed that out to the server, her eyes got really big and she started apologizing profusely and said that she would take it back. We told her there was no need to waste a pizza, just don't charge us for the toppings we didn't order. She said, "No. I have to take it back!" She was shook up. We noticed how shook up she was so I said, "Sure, if that's what you need to do." After she had taken the pizza back we sat there wondering about her reaction. Around a minute or so afterward we heard a loud thud against the wall, hard enough that the wall shook for a second. It was our turn for our eyes to get really big. When the server returned with our new pizza, she asked if it was OK. We both assured her that it was perfect. It really was wonderful pizza.

Funny story about Chanello’s…

May 17, 2022, 8:03 PM

I was at Clemson in the early 90’s and evidently Domino’s and other chains really hurt their business. Around the time they were closing, Domino’s was honoring their coupons and Chanelo’s printed a coupon that was something similar to “buy 1 pizza get four free”. With “not honored at Chanelo’s” very inconspicuously printed on the coupon. A guy that lived on my hall worked at Domino’s and they honored it for several hours before figuring out the hoax.

Oh my Chanello’s. Leaving TTT at midnight and picking up a peppers, onion, and mushroom pizza and heading back to B-8 to munch while I got high from my neighbors pot smoke coming thru those thin metal walls while listening to a little Pink Floyd The Wall The above combo made it the best pizza on the face of the earth. I can smell it right now- the pizza not the pot. Nothing come close. I want the early 80’s back. Good night.

Thought the subject line was a set-up for whatever gastrointestinal goings-on transpired "after" a Chanello's visit. It took a much better turn.

Beautiful thing about pizza is that the best has more to do with when and where and in what condition than who made it. My favorite pizza may have been the one I had this past Friday from Il Bucato in Columbia, their Pork Trio. It was hot and fresh, I was happy and in good company, and it was the last one to date. Many excellent pizza experiences over the years. Hopefully many more to come.

Re: After Chanello’s

May 18, 2022, 12:52 PM

The best pizza I have ever eaten was at a place called Mystic Pizza in San Francisco.

I went on a trip with my now wife's (we were dating at the time) family to San Francisco and her sister and brother-in-law decided they would order Thai food for everybody.

That doesn't sound too bad unless you know the people ordering it and realize that no matter where they go to eat, they are going to order the absolute strangest sounding or tasting thing on the menu just because they think it's "interesting" or will "be a good experience to say we've tasted it".

When the food arrived, it made the entire house stink so bad that my wife and I left to go walking in search of some food. We were quite naïve and didn't realize what wandering around San Fran was really about until later in our trip, but that is a different story for another time.

We stumbled upon Mystic Pizza. It was the best thing we ate on the entire trip! It's still the first thing either of us ever mentions if somebody brings up a conversation about pizza and it's been more than 10 years.

Unfortunately the sun started to go down as we were finishing up our meal. As we paid and left, we realized that the atmosphere on the street outside went down as quick as the sun.

We made a quick choice and decided to get back to the house as quickly as possible before things got any sketchier, which I still think was the third best decision we made that day behind choosing the right pizza joint and refusing to eat whatever made the house smell so terrible before we left.
