Challenge: Can you come up with a more winnable schedule than the one we have for '15? 2 rules...

1. Cannot change any OOC games. 2. This isn't about what's most convenient for your travels, but what's best for the team - so keep your traveling preferences out of it.
Here it is:
Sept. 5 WOFFORD Sept. 12 APPALACHIAN STATE Sept. 17 at Louisville (Thurs.) Sept. 26 OPEN Oct. 3 NOTRE DAME Oct. 10 GEORGIA TECH Oct. 17 BOSTON COLLEGE Oct. 24 at Miami Oct. 31 at NC State Nov. 7 FLORIDA STATE Nov. 14 at Syracuse Nov. 21 WAKE FOREST Nov. 28 at South Carolina

Some slight improvements:

|
|
Prefer Open date a few weeks later.
If unable to move Open date, then: Week 3 Notre Dame Week 4 Open Week 5 Georgia Tech Week 6 Louisville (on a Saturday)
Maybe an easier game before FSU (swap FSU/Syracuse dates, swap Miami/BC dates)

Week 3 ND plays UMASS. Kind of mess everything up from there.
I'd like to see us play a bit of an easier slate be for FSU, too.
Swapping Miami BC games gives us ND/GT/MIAMI all in a row. Early in the year, This may not be the best recipe do success. It's really difficult, taking other teams' ooc games into account, to have us enough up with a better setup than this.
A whole summer to pick Petrino's brilliant offensive brain going back to his Razorback days and before. Great for us bc BV not hasn't faced off against him but one time. This will allow him to become almost too familiar with what'll be coming our way.
Almost 16 days off before ND after that Louisville game to again prepare for one of the offensively elite play-callers in the game, in Kelly.
During that time, we can also rest DW (the value of this time off can't even be measured, with him coming off an ACL injury), dedicate 2-3 days towards prepping for GT, and give our new impact players THAT much more time to ready themselves to compete at a National Championship caliber level come Oct. 3 (the start of maybe the toughest stretch of six games in football).
Again. Valuable time, those 16 days, plus the 2 weeks of Wofford and App St. If we can beat UofL with DW being pocket passer (which we can easily do, given his accuracy and QBR rating last year), that essentially buys him an extra month of rehabbing his knee before big-boy football gets going. Could you imagine these guys having to open with AU this year? Again, perfect setup.
16 extra days in the weight room can be night and day do something of these Fr O-linemen and D-linemen we'll be counting on.
Overall, I think it's the best possible scenario for us, given what ESPN and the ACC had to work around. Maybe the best regardless.

To me, teams are fine..order is what could switch and be better for the team:
Sept. 5 WOFFORD Sept. 12 APPALACHIAN STATE Sept. 17 at Louisville (Thurs.) Sept. 26 at Syracuse Oct. 3 NOTRE DAME Oct. 10 at Miami Oct. 17 GEORGIA TECH Oct. 24 at BOSTON COLLEGE Oct. 31 at NC State Nov. 7 FLORIDA STATE Nov. 14 OPEN Nov. 21 WAKE FOREST Nov. 28 at South Carolina

Long trip to Miami the week before GT. And you'd want to see us play 8 consecutive ACC games with no break in between. Brutal. Don't think there's a team in the country that foul mark it from the 'ville to FSU in consecutive weeks unscathed with that schedule.

..like I said, technically, you could switch where I had the open date and Miami to alleviate that. Basic thing was not having ND and GT back to back...fill the open date's original spot with a team we shouldn't have an issue with (could allow safety buffer for any injuries sustained at Louisville..figured moving Syracuse there would work that angle). Had open date after Fl State to give 3 weeks for injuries to heal prior to SCar (but with the stretch like you mention that'd cause, probably better up where I had Miami to split the stretch).

Rules followed, I like this..
Jan 29, 2015, 8:49 PM
|
|
9/19 FSU 9/26 @ SYRACUSE 10/3 ND 10/10 BYE 10/15 @ LVILLE 10/24 GT 10/31 @ MIAMI 11/7 BC 11/14 @ NCST 11/21 WAKE 11/28 @ USUCK
This way our bye is later and gives plenty prep time for our Thursday night game in Lville and an extra few days for GT. Also, FSU early while they are still breaking in the masses. Lastly, no back to back away games with BC in between the U and the Pack.

I can't even argue that. That'd be a perfect setup. Only thing that would concern me is our inexperienced line not picking up complex, disguised blitzing schemes and it resulting in us losing DW. Also, our new LB's may get a bit lost in coverage with the extra time the QB would have given our lack of a true speed rush on the edge.

I think this would be the most winnable schedule.

This would be a solid schedule as well.
Only thing that would concern me is only having 6 days to prep for Brian Kelly's offense (one we've never seen before, unfamiliar with their play-calling tendencies out of which formations, on which down and distances, etc..). They'd also be playing the UMass minutemen before us - which equals 2 weeks of peparation for our offense - while we'd be playing two physical ACC teams in consecutive weeks leading up to them.
And keep in mind, the schedule that we have, is essentially ESPN's way of sayingg "We're pulling for Watson to become the beat QB in CFB, with all of the weapons surrounding him." Clemson will resemble last year's Oregon team. They were America's darling, and a huge ratings draw every week due to the heisman and playoff race - and the rest of the country not hating them - like BAMA, LSU, OSU, USC, UT, FSU, Miami (had it's own 30 for 30), UF, Ole Miss.
However, be even moreso a darling than Oregon (bc although they've never won a National Championship, they have a multi-billion dollar booster who owns nike and provides different jersey attire for the kids EVERY game, not to mention the nicest facilities in the country - and that pisses a lot of people off)
So essentially, we're the kid in the movie who gets picked on, told we're not good enough (clemsoning), that it just can't be done... but we live and do things the right way and doesn't deserve most of the harsh judgement/pain. So everyone in the audience pulls hard for said kid to just buck up and gain the courage to do everything within his power to change only that which is within control. The guy everyone cheers for to prove wrong those who carelessly throw around unfair and unfounded slanders and judgement - that's the one the whole country can agree that if it's not their own team in the playoff - we're pulling for that team to just dominate the other hated teams who've been given unfair preferential treatment do as long as they can remember
Ive' talked to numerous people outside of SC about Clemson and the all have respect for, and nothing but good things to say about the program that's been run under Dabo... many even pulling for us to slay that gaint that is FSU, ESPN SEC lovers, the doubters and any other mis-informed journalist with an agenda who try to pile it on us with the use of the ancient term Clemsoning.

Rant over. But seriously, think about it from a ratings perspective. We're one of the few top teams every yeat that the country doesn't love to hate. Which equals higher ratings in big games. And off the chart ratings in the playoffs. ESPN giving DW as much time as it possibly can to heal and finish the whole season at full strength. They're much richer that way.
Now rant is over.

The whole point of this is to say WE can't even hand-pick a better schedule than the nbe we were given, and the dates ESPN had to work with.
It's got playoffs written all over it.
