Deion to Ga Tech?

Sep 22, 2022, 9:52 AM

There is some chatter

Re: Deion to Ga Tech?

Sep 22, 2022, 9:54 AM

I think he would be a good hire.

I'd like to see it happen. Not because he is a fantastic coach or anything, but he'd at least bring some flair and entertainment to a very boring spot in the ACC.

I think he will be able to recruit, but as you stated, he will bring much needed flair to the ACC.

I agree!***

It would certainly be good publicity for the ACC.***

Their preference is to hire a more proven/experienced coach.

Can they get anyone good though?

Sep 22, 2022, 10:34 AM

Everyone wants to hire a successful, experienced coach. That's a VERY tough job right now and I'm not sure many guys are going to want it. The roster they will inherit is NOT good. That immediately tells you they need a competent recruiter and/or somebody that can build a legit NIL program out of a seemingly apathetic fan base.

There's alot of talent in that area, but UGA gets first dibs on it, and Clemson, Auburn, Bama, Florida, etc are all close enough to fight over the rest. Who can go in there and collect enough of the scraps to build that roster up?

I get that GT just failed with a young, energetic, recruiter-type HC, but I think they might have to roll the dice with another and hope he's also a competent coach.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The two names they mention are...

Sep 22, 2022, 10:37 AM

Matt Campbell and Jamey Chadwell

GT is paying Collins $3 million annually which is the same thing Campbell is making at Iowa State and much more than the $850,000 Coastal is paying Chadwell.

If I'm the GT AD, I'm making a hard run at Matt Campbell before somebody else does.

I can think of a few...

Sep 22, 2022, 2:36 PM

compared to many other schools in the conference and southeast...

- Facilities are average at best.
- Academics/lack of undergrad options make it more difficult to recruit compared to many other regional schools
- Lack of support from the administration.
- Smaller pool of donors compared to other much larger schools nearby.
- still recovering from Paul Johnson era and Geoff Collins has done nothing to improve the trajectory of the program.
- Uncertainty around the ACC and what the future holds for schools like GT.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I definitely get the whole ACC argument...

Sep 22, 2022, 3:40 PM

but GT won a national championship as recently as 1990, so it can definitely be done there.

That was 32 years ago

Sep 22, 2022, 11:57 PM

1990 might as well be 1940 at this point given how different things are at GT. It's not even close to the same environment it was, even 20 years ago.

A lot can change in just 10 years. Just look at Clemson from 1990 - 1999. Or, 2006 - 1016.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Chadwell might take that

Sep 22, 2022, 11:52 AM [ in reply to The two names they mention are... ]

I don't think Campbell would. I assume he's already turned down better jobs.

He has also been mentioned for Auburn

Looks like my hometown plainsmen may try and pull another midnight coup to get a coaching change. Cannot imagine that working out for them

He’d appear to be a hypocrite if he takes a job at a non-HBCU school. He sort of painted himself in a corner with all his talk.

If he truly believes the things he says, he’ll stay put. I don’t think he’s hurting for money.

Don't know how good of a coach he is right now, but he could get recruits to come just about anywhere, my guess is that he will hold out for a better HC job than GT.

I can see it.

Deion could recruit the Atlanta area well. He could pull immediate impact players from the portal. He could transform their roster quickly.

Certainly from a PR and media interest standpoint, but I don't think he has established that he is going to be a good coach.

Re: I don't know...

Sep 22, 2022, 8:32 PM

Saban hadn’t established he was going to be a good coach either, until he was given a chance.

No one knows for sure, but given the situation Tech is in, they need a splash. Hiring another generic mid-major guy with “a good resume” it’s likely to move the needle.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Deion to Ga Tech?

Sep 22, 2022, 4:58 PM

I don't think that is a good idea.

I think Deion needs to be in a situation where he is the center of attention. He is a great delf-promoter. I think that works, for a short period of time, but not for long term success.
