CFB playoff

Nov 16, 2017, 11:22 AM

The playoff system is doing exactly what it was intended to do. It gets people talking in circles about postseason possibilities and it allows teams to control their own destiny vs putting it into the biased minds of AP voters. Every team in the top 7 controls their own destiny, which is why I don’t understand the uproar. Regardless, I’m glad these debates will sort themselves out on the field. Go Tigers!

Media is in uproar to create buzz, but fans are just excited

and talking about the possibilities. This Klatt guy is just doing his job; creating noise to get ratings and clicks. Most reasonable folks can see that whatever 4 teams win out from the top7 are going to be in.

I remembering Klatt speaking with Cowherd after the CFP saying how it was a great thing that everyone was talking about Cowherds fraud statement and Dabo calling him out. Klatt said he wanted to get that type of attention. Seems he has.

Because it is still in the hands of voters

Nov 16, 2017, 11:45 AM

Which leads to subjectivity.

Only way it will be right is if they completely take out the voters.

Let the conferences decide who they want to be in the playoff by winning their conference championship games.

Do it by divisions or by your 2 best teams. Either way the conferences put 2 teams in thier champ games and the 5 winners go to the playoff.

What happens when a 9-3 team (or on strange years an 8-4 team) upsets a undefeated or 11-1 opponent in a conference championship game?

The way it is now works, in all years it has had the top 4 (imo, at worst it's had the top two teams) teams go to the playoffs. The last two years it didn't matter who 3 and 4 were, us and Bama were far and away the only two elite teams.

Then a 9-5 CONFERENCE CHAMP goes to the playoffs.

Nov 16, 2017, 11:58 AM

Playoffs arnt about deciding who is the best team.

You set rules way ahead of time. The teams that meet those rules make it to the plaoffs with zero discussion.

There's still a problem with your playoff system

Nov 16, 2017, 12:02 PM

How do you seed 5 teams to determine a champion? Who gets a bye the first round? How are the locations chosen? Subjectivity will still come back into play.

Some bigwig guest comes on.

Next marble 2 seed
Next marble 3 seed
Next marble 4 seed.

Or use 1 of those bingo, lottery machines.

OOC games would be meaningless

Nov 16, 2017, 12:01 PM [ in reply to Because it is still in the hands of voters ]

I don’t think you should get an automatic bid by winning your conference championship. This may reward a terrible conference and dilute quality OOC games. Conference championships should be weighted and improve the chances of a team making the playoff.

There you go. . More subjectivity. You know the

Nov 16, 2017, 12:09 PM

Coots say every other conference is turriible.

Are they right? Who is right?

OOC games won't get ANY WORSE because they generate $$$$$.

Coaches won't want to play them but they don't now. The conferences will want that TV $$$.

People will always find something to complain about.

Nov 16, 2017, 11:49 AM

Remember when everyone said the BCS relied too heavily on computer statistics? Now they are complaining because of the bias of human voters. It's a no win situation and completely pointless to get upset about at this point in the season. Any reasonable person knows that #2 and #3 will knock one of the other out, only one of #1, #6, #7 will be in the final four. At this point, anyone in the top #10 could reasonably end up in the final four.

The concept of a playoff instead of the much flawed BCS...

Nov 16, 2017, 11:56 AM

system was a delight to almost all college football fans. We endured the media voting favorites higher the polls and voting the 'upstarts,' down often shutting them out of contention. It was self serving, vicious, cold and unethical. I've seen good, top ten teams being voted in the 20's so that the writer's local favorite could gain ground.

I believe every voter in the AP poll has a natural conflict to the PO due to losing most of their power. Frankly, after the committee meets and forms a ranking the media is neutered and impotent. Talking head and writers imagine having a seat at the table and remember when their voice matter.

Of course media is going to squirm and whine about a fair and balanced system in which professionals who aren't fooled by hand selected, non-applicable statistics rank teams fairly enough to allow the games to determine who belongs and who doesn't. Of course there is wailing and gnashing of teeth over favorites not getting special treatment. 'Fair,' has morphed into a relative term and those who hold a perverted definitions of 'fair,' are doing the suffering.

What is strange to me is that we're discussing media while football is in full blossom season.

when they demanded removal from the formula.

I lauds them for it.

They actually agree with you[smfh], let us not hate and really, where would Tim Bourret be without the AP as reference for all the many records Dabo and staff are breaking or setting?

Silver linings and medias are people too.

Total agreement

Nov 16, 2017, 12:30 PM

For the most part the playoff system has put team's post season destiny in their own hands. Win you conference, keep your regualr season loses to a minimum, schedule strong OOC games, and you've got a great shot at making the playoffs. Id love to eventually see it expand to another round of playoffs so they can have automatic bids for winning your conference. I dont agree with the weak conferences vs strong conferences arguement because a vast majority of these conference alignments were set decades ago when the football landscape looked nothing like it does today. As long as everyone lives and dies under the same set of rules that is as fair as it can get.
