break for Jeff Scott at USF. Sadly, that is probably true. His lack of success, along with "The Chad" Morris ultimate lack of success once he tried to step up too big, too fast, begs a question.

Has Dabo Swinney really managed to capture lightning in a bottle here at Clemson? Meaning, the unique set of circumstances that got him the job, plus all the other external factors in play in and around Clemson, just cannot be duplicated elsewhere?

It's for SURE that Dabo's Faith First approach to everything would not "play well" a lot of places. And yet, starting this coming year, there will be three head coaches who are literally trying to transplant "Daboism" into other environments, being, Coach Scott, Coach Elliot, and most notably, Coach Brent Venables. Brent by all appearances is literally trying to clone his Clemson experience at Oklahoma.

I wish them all the success in the world, but, as the first couple of "branches" of the Dabo Tree have already found out, it's a tough world out there.

I hope we at Clemson realize just what we have, and don't pull a Stupid and try to run Dabo off at some point. I sincerely hope he retires here, many years from now.

This is a good point.

May 9, 2022, 5:32 PM

It also begs the question, can Dabo replicate that success here?

I am still “All In.” I believe Dabo has vision, energy and character that will get Clemson back on top of CF. We need to remember the affects of NIL and the TP has thrown college football into a chaotic cluster _________.

Those who allowed NIL and the TP to get a grip on college sports without any guidelines or boundaries. They should have planned for this but it’s like OK let’s go with it and see what happens. Those responsible for this s chaos should have their but kicked up and down the football field by every fan.

Fan’s let’s show Class that comes with being part of the Clemson Family by positively supporting each and ever player. Let’s Win as a team and show Class if we lose a game. Be “ All In “ together. Let’s show the rest of the college athletics world why being a Clemson fan is really special. Let’s show that we are truly one big family and are unique compared to all of the other schools by winning or losing with Class and great sportsmanship.

I feel blessed to be a part of such a great group of very generous and caring fans. ??

Go Tigers!

Dabo certainly has the defense to win it all again this year, along with more options on offense.

Very good post. As far as Jeff Scott is concerned, he must like the beach because being competitive at USF is a tall, tall task. I hope he is successful but if there is any history there, I don't know it.

Why would this be Scott's make or break year, it's takes a little time to fix a broken football program.

Excellent point. Now if the Administration’s of schools like USF would realize success take’s time. Firing the HC every 3 or 4 years in my mind has a negative affect on recruiting and the football program overall. Now Jeff has NIL and the TP to deal with.

We been to keep Jeff Scott and his staff in or thoughts and prayers. Coach Scott I know so many Clemson and USF fan’s are pulling for you to turn USF into a great program.

I agree. The program was 10’ below surface when he got there. His AD is supportive. The néw facilities will help. Jeff is very good on his feet, knows the game and has a good staff. His kids work hard. He needs to show improvement on the field - but seems he is not close to hot seat.

I think Jeff Scott was and is ready to become a head coach. He stepped into to that role just as Hurricane NIL / Transfer Portal started creating chaos in college football. College football has turned upside down. If Jeff is fired money to buy out his contract could be used to help improve the football program. I applaud Coach Scott for trying to improve the strength of USF’s schedule.

They can fire Jeff but IMO it would be a mistake. To overcome the obstacles at USF will take a few more years and more money funneled into football. When are schools going to learn sometimes you have to give coaches more tools to do their job. For Jeff I think $$$ is just one issue. Fan support, support from the school and energy within the football is needed. Coach Scott cannot do it alone.

For those who do not remember Danny was a pair of orange pants away from losing his job, Ken Hatfield never had a chance, Tommy West lacked experience to run a big time program like Clemson. Some will disagree but Tommy Bowden was not given the financial resources to hire top coordinators and assistant coaches, and projects promised to TB when he accepted the HCing job at Clemson. Finally, it took more financial resources, a HC with Big Dreams, much better Paid assistant coaches, and patience from the Administration and the AD plus 5 to 7 years of hard work by Dabo and his staff. Even Dabo was almost fired.

I am sorry if I step on some toes but I blame Big Money Booster’s as much as I blame ESPN, the NCAA and the player’s who continued to push the “ I am Entitled button “ as well as the spineless state legislators ( some who are also big money booster’s ) who let the player’s gain so much power. I blame HC’s , AD’s and BOT’s for those schools who escalated Coaching salaries above an level that put many schools in financial stress. We as fans also allowed this to happen by continuing to buy overpriced tickets and sports paraphernalia.

The average tuition for college is approximately $25,000 to $50,000 a year. Private schools are even higher. Some of this is due to the cost of running the athletic programs.

The need for Clemson to continually search for more financial resources basically killed a huge Clemson tradition that had been a part of Tiger football for as long as I can remember 50 plus years, was students camping out for tickets. To me at one time a student at Clemson and daughter who graduated for CU, it a tradition students will miss.

I feel Jeff is a very good HC and deserves at least 3 more years. Administration’s and fan’s need to realize it takes time, money and an energetic fan base to build a successful football program. But don’t forget about some of the old traditions. IMO most HC’s deserve I feel approximately 5 to 7 years especially in today’s college football environment.

The fact that Danny was on the verge of losing his job is

May 9, 2022, 7:18 PM

one of the biggest cases of "selective amnesia" among some Clemson fans. I remember it WELL. If we had lost to USuK that day, especially if it had been in blowout fashion, I believe the Danny Ford era would have been over.

That is why I always give Terry Don Phillips all the credit in the world for having the stones to stick with Dabo Swinney after the end of the 2010 season. The wolves were howling at the door, and it would have been REAL easy for him to pull the plug. Dabo has often related the story of Kathleen crying in the hall, telling him that Terry Don was waiting for him in his office. She, and probably Dabo as well, thought he was marching to the firing squad.

May 9, 2022, 8:57 PM [ in reply to Re: I saw an article awhile back that said this year is make or ]

without blame either. They're the ones cashing in a couple million dollars a year and demanding huge buyouts and multi-year extensions. They're represented by bigtime agents now, like they're Jack Nicholson negotiating for his next movie. (LOL). Jeff Scott signed a 5-year deal worth $12.5 million in 2019 which has now been extended through 2026. That's 7 years the school is locked into him... win, lose or draw. Suck, do OK, or win big. Talk about being in the catbird seat... he's making about 5 times as much as the average neurosurgeon while going 1-8 and 2-10.

What were his qualifications? Being co-offensive coordinator at CU when we were loaded at every offensive position and winning nat'l titles. Kinda easy to call successful plays with all that talent. Hel1, I'd probably do OK being an Asst Coach at Duke on a team full of 5-star basketball players.

College coaches are making a killing. I think at one point Muschamp was being paid by Florida, SCAR, and Auburn at the same time... to NOT COACH. He could sit on his azzz and do nothing and collect three big fat checks a month. I can't think of another profession in which you are absolutely gawd-awful at every job, get fired at each one, and still collect millions, years after you're gone.

And going back to Danny and all that is irrelevant now. Because the money is so out of whack nowadays. I remember reading somewhere that Charlie Pell took the Clemson job for $40K a year, and him and his wife danced in the den when he got the call. Put that in an inflation calculator, and that's the equivalent of about $200K today. Good money for coaching football, yes... but not stupid crazy money.

And then the coaches blame their failures on the school not throwing more $millions at the program. I don't know, man.....

until 2015 to get to the level our fans desired. Many were ready to let him go after 5 coot losses. Clemson was patient with Bowden and it did not work out for Bowden, but I think it paid dividends for Dabo.

May 10, 2022, 9:35 AM

nowhere NEAR the hot seat.

He is building here in a way that takes time but will yield long-term stability.

That article was just click bait.

Building a new indoor practice facility, hope to be in an On Campus stadium by 2027 season - tons & tons of community-relationship building, a new prez of the uni that loves Jeff & what he & Michael Kelly are doing.

He will be successful here & he will be given the time required to do it the right way. He could win 3 games total in the next 2 years, and his seat would still only then be starting to get a little warm. But that ain't gonna happen.

Write it down - he will win a little bit more this year (maybe even a little bit more than a little bit) - And the next year he will improve upon that and then it will start rolling from there.

You have NO IDEA how decimated Strong left this program. It was despicable that he kept cashing his paycheck.

DISCLAIMER: All of the USF / Jeff Scott predictions are based on NIL and the portal not completely destroying all of college football as we know it before then.

This

Strong "finished" the last HALF of his tenure with a 4-14 record. And he did NOTHING to stock the cabinet. He really just demoed the kitchen and moved out. Not only that but they are/were in a massive culture shift of not having their player getting in a firefight over road rage issues. Between Holtz, Taggert, Strong, etc they need a long-term thing. Leavitte was stable - for a program - not really stable from a HR perspective but they were really a 9 win team then.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

You are right, FD - it was more than Strong. But CS

May 11, 2022, 11:54 AM

was completely disengaged AT LEAST his last 2 years - COMPLETELY. He came across like - Do you KNOW my PEDIGREE and how ABOVE this place I am ? ?

And Taggert - who was a little before my time of getting pretty close to the deal - obviously had "higher ambitions" and was OK, but his eyes were elsewhere.

Skip Holtz was engaging but I just don't think he is very good - despite some success at other places.

It was / IS more than just Strong our JS is having to overcome - but man'o'man - Strong burned the kitchen down and moved out.

A lot of Dabo's success can be attributed to perfect timing. Florida State and South Carolina were beginning their collapse as Deshaun Watson was arriving on campus. There was nobody else in the Atlantic that could compete with our talent and the Coastal was a total disaster. The ACC was really really bad and Clemson had the overwhelming talent advantage, especially at QB with DW4 and TL16, compared to everyone else.

The success under Tajh comes from the fact that Dabo was able to recruit really well. But, if we're being honest, it's easier to recruit at Clemson compared to other ACC schools. Death Valley and the community sells itself. Nobody else in the conference can match our gameday atmosphere. Our administration is "all-in" for the program's success.

Seeing Chad and Jeff struggle is not surprising. They were at schools that didn't have the talent to compete against their respective conferences. They had to build from scratch, Dabo didn't. They didn't have a CJ Spiller, Jacoby Ford, Daquan Bowers, etc. already on campus. Dabo took over one of the top 3 most talented teams in the ACC. Chad and Jeff took over disasters.
