Can someone tell me exactly what facility improvements

the men’s basketball program needs?
Also list the staff that is needed to turn this program around?
What is needed to be able to recruit top talent for the program, in the mold of a PJ Hall?

A good start would be a brand new

Not sure why this question is asked for the 50th time. Guessing you did not like the first 50 answers so you can play gotcha to support your narrative?

Why did our football team need a $50M indoor practice facility?

Why did the football program need a $100Mm football operations center?

Why did the football program need 60 new staffers?

Why does the football program need to pay coaches at a top five level?

Simply stated we need to invest in the basketball program to show recruits we are serious about winning given we have almost no positive history, dont play for championships, dont put guys in the league, have no natural recruiting area and basketball is way down the list in terms of being relevant to fans or students.

in Brownell’s 5th or 6th year here. What did he do with that in 2016-2021? Absolutely nothing!

Please educate yourself before you claim we haven’t done anything for basketball. Brownell had his chance. It’s time to upgrade our coaching staff for the first time in over a decade!

and beating a record number of NCAA Tournament teams another year was horrible. Beating UNC in Chapel Hill for the first time really sucked too. And signing one of our best recruits in program history is nothing to be proud of either.

It’s also not an accomplishment at all to know that we have a clean program, have record GPAs and graduation rates, and have players who represent Clemson well in the community.

Nope, we haven’t accomplished a thing since those renovations.

For any coach we hire. That is the very bare minimum expected from EVERY SINGLE CLEMSON coach.

In six years we’ve beaten a bad UNC team and made one Sweet 16.

We have been exactly 1 game over .500 three of those six years and have a losing record in a very average ACC. In that time FSU, GT, and VT have all won the ACC Championship. That is all Brownell can do with $60+ Million in renovations?!? We were 17-16 this year. That is not the expectation. We are not near where we need to be after well over a decade. This isn’t rocket science.

Clemson has just 2 top 100 player that they have brought in Simms and Hall. Nothing since Hall three years ago.

And the majority players from the sweet sixteen team were already on campus including Simms.

Thought the new facilities were supposed to jump start recruiting?

The hope is the new NIL offers coming out this week will help even more...

Clemson Football paid all those bills.

Just like like Clemson Football has single-handedly funded all athletic programs as well as the coffers of all ACC universities. Just as Clemson Football has sparked university attendance growth and massive capital projects all over campus and town. Basketball is on the liability side of the balance sheet.

We could fund Clemson Basketball equivalently to Duke and UNC, but with demonstrated average and uninspirational coaching, the result would be very few more wins.

Men’s basketball at Clemson makes a substantial profit.

Apr 4, 2022, 12:35 PM

It fully funds its own needs and also helps fund other programs.

The football program doesn’t fund the men’s basketball program. The new basketball facilities were not funded by football. They were largely funded by donors who Brad met with and persuaded to contribute.

Some of y’all need to take a peek at the athletics finances. I included pre- and post-COVID. Football pays for everything else period. That is the reality. Basketball used to turn a small profit. So maybe you can sense from this why investment in football is important. If you think we can invest in MBB and get our program to a revenue level comparable with a Louisville, UNC or Duke then I’m all ears. That’s highly unlikely though. Even the SCAR women lose $5 mil+ a year after being one of the top programs for years now and filling their seats for games.

You left out the most important answer, bc Clemson FB rules, as it should. Dabo wasn't handed anything until he started putting 10-11 wins a year consistently with huge wins over the consistent top 5 FB teams in the country. Dabo and his FB program has earned everything that our FB program has to date, and he done it with the odds heavily stacked against him with him never ever being a FB Coordinator, or never ever being a HC over any college sport in his life history.

We can whine and cry about all our FB program has to date, but none of it would've been possible without the extremely hard work that Dabo put into our FB teams with him receiving insults throughout his journey to the top of college FB in a era where making it to the top 5 and staying there was harder than any other time in college FB history.

The entire world of college FB fans, sports writers, and know it All's gave Nick Saban and Bama all rights to being the first FB HC with the best team ever at Alabama to win 15 straight games, and bringing the FB National Championship back to Alabama in the year of 2018, and Dabo Swinney and his Clemson FB team that didn't stand a chance of winning that game, and he snatched the heart out of Nick Saban, and the best Bama team ever in their history by a score of 44-16, leaving no doubt of what HC had done the best job, and having the best team in college FB!!!

Dabo has more than earned everything that his Clemson FB program has, and some!!!!

It nearly bankrupted the athletic department and did it a full 10 years before we added some paint and grey seats but if you want to show a nothing-to-championship route, here you go.

You also need to have a program willing to cut the budget of a sweet-sixteen coach at a Power 5 school... and hope their wife has area connections.

The ole chicken and the egg conundrum.

If more money is spent on Clemson men AND women basketball and the coaches without vision remain in place; how is that different from throwing money in a hole?

And that is the risk. There is no guarantee it will work. Only a guarantee that it won't work if you don't.

For UVA, money came first, coach/vision came second.

For me, I rather see our return-on-championships be spent on football, soccer, golf, track, baseball....

and basketball be a plucky-thorn "also" existing.

over the last 20 years there has been almost 100 million dollars spent on Little John. They should've scrapped and built new but were worried that they couldnt fill it up and would look bad.

Without a doubt the smart money based on risk and ROI would go to football, soccer (both) or softball as these programs already have a foundation of excellence. Dumping a ton of money into a basketball program which has been a doormat of the conference for a hundred years is risky at best. Perhaps an NIL to grab one additional high 4* per year would be a much better choice.

flag link

Going cheap on basketball hasn’t worked in 100+ years of Clemson basketball.

Apr 4, 2022, 11:12 AM

Perhaps we should make a real commitment to it for once and see how it works.

If the current coaches don’t get the job done, we are in a significantly better position to get better coaches if the additional investment has been made.

Sad, shouldn't even have a program. What about Neff being a basketball guy and had strong goals for the program moving forward? Actually said last week on wccpfm that he wanted to win an ACC Championship.

Re: The ole chicken and the egg conundrum.

Apr 4, 2022, 1:33 PM

Naw, you can still compete even if you aren't buying your way to the top. Have fun with Wake as an also ran.

What are you going to do, pull a Maryland and spend on all money in all sports and not win at anything? Drive all the programs into the dirt? Bankrupt the dept, and become Rutgers South for the B10?

I am a basketball/soccer guy that went to a football school. I say spend the money on football, soccer second, baseball/golf third. Then the other sports. Finally, whatever is leftover for basketball. And I have been to far, far more basketball games, heck maybe even more ACC Tourney games than football games.

I want to win an ACC Championship, heck yeah. Money is finite. You got to be realistic. If you said spend a dollar to win a championship, which program gets it first dollar? Second? Fifth? DO you spend more on football getting another champ before getting basketball their first?

Any Clemson AD that spends the money to try and make Clemson a "basketball" power should be fired for torpedoing the football program. We are not that big of a school with the resources to do everything.

on LJ (using the $60,000,000 spent last 6 years OR the $100 MIL last 20 years)..

is to divide wins into $ and see how we compare $ spent per win..to say UNC, or whomever (Like: Seton Hall, Providence, SYr, Lsu, UCLa, even Coot Mens).

Waiting..since my calculator is down. TIA!

Brad's players clearly need a bistro and a slide so that

Apr 4, 2022, 1:37 PM

they can help him win more close games instead of consistently being the worst in the league there. You'd have to be a moran to believe Brad can stop getting outcoached regularly without his players having access to these accoutrements. It bottles the mind.
