Can Someone Help Me Understand...

Sep 19, 2021, 10:10 AM

Ok... I think the general consensus is that teams have finally figured out our "brilliant" offensive scheme. Supposedly this scheme relies on the *successful* completion of several plays back to back that that build upon each other, causing the opposing defense to have to play honest over a wide portion of the field.

Ok great - sounds good on paper. But the problem is, once we get a couple missed throws, or dropped balls, the whole thing falls apart - because the whole premise hinges on successful plays back to back.

So my question is - who in the world thought this was a good idea? That's like designing a car that only drives safely on sunny days, or a pair of sneakers that only works on flat surfaces.

So my question is - are Dabo & Tony really this naive & dogmatic? Willing to drive a train into the depths of hell based on some idea they think is clever?

I really need some honest input here because I feel like 1+1 is not equaling 2 here & I'm missing something.

Thanks

I guess if I were a coach and saw the players every day and know their skills and weaknesses, maybe I would have a plan that could give us the best chance to win. Otherwise, I don’t know enough about each player/position to judge.

I agree with you. The problem is we don’t have a competent offensive coaching staff. We’ve had generational talents cover up the glaring issues for far too long and now it’s catching up with us.

You’ll continue to hear “look at what we’ve done in recent years, we have 2 nattys, etc…” with the same coaching staff. There were glaring issues even during these times. Inept play calling, bad decisions, interceptions galore, etc… But we were able to overcome those discrepancies with the awesome players we had.

I love Clemson (since 1979) and I love Dabo Swinney and the team(s) that he’s had under him. I’m all about the culture and bringing these young men up in a positive environment to be great men. Won’t I don’t like about him at times is his blind loyalty to his staff and some of the players. It’s finally catching up with us and it’s painful to watch.

I pray that changes are made ASAP and we finish strong but at this point, I don’t have much faith in some of the coaches on our staff. (Defense not included in this as they are the saving grace and has been for quite some time)

Go Tigers!!!!! ??????????

What's there to understand. In the past we have had "brilliant" players to run those brilliant offensive schemes. This year we don't.
We have a sophomore quarterback who because of two good performances last season was given the assignment of being the Starter and replacing a quarterback who not only won a National Championship as a freshman, but was Clemson's first over all # 1 pick in this years NFL draft.
How is that working out so far?
Secondly ,while he is good, our best running back, who also replaced a first round NFL draft pick is a true freshman. That is Will Shipley. And Dixon has shown me much so far.
Or how about our best Wide Receiver missed all of last year and maybe is not suited to be a slot back.
Also our "O" Line is young and frankly I don't think is that strong by the way Georgia made them look at times.
Add to it I don't think that Tony Elliott is as good on his own as he was with Jeff Scott.
Just some thoughts for you on paper.

Wouldn't it be nice, if Klubnik were already here to guide our offense downfield? Barring that, start using Pomm and Taylor more, and if they can prove more effective than DJ, make one of them first string. After all, DJ has had 3 games already and has shown no improvement. If the other two can prove better, make DJ a fullback. He's good for 3 or 4 yards. And I know that it is the coaches, who see these qb's every day in practice, but the spectators see them in a GAME. Some players are better in a game, than they are on the practice field.

I don't know but my thoughts are that there is probably more turmoil behind closed doors. Dabo is going to say that it is hard to win when the microphone is in front of him, but everybody says that he is ultra competitive so I doubt the conversation will be at all similar when he has Tony Elliot in front of him.

We have problems and everybody knows it. I believe that we have the coaching staff to figure it out, though it is taking longer than I expected. I hope that if things don't change in the near future that Dabo will make the hard decisions to change what is needed. We are not headed into the abyss, but Best certainly has not been the Standard lately.

That is an accurate statement, hopefully Dabo is protecting the key players and coaches but getting to the crux of the problem(s) behind closed doors.
