Cade unpopular opinion

Sep 22, 2022, 7:59 PM

I was as high on him after the first game as anyone else was. Since then though he hasn’t really impressed me. I haven’t rewatched any of the games but to me DJ is the clear better QB.

Cade is something to see in real life (like first 20 rows seating).
His speed is unbelievable.
His spiral is very tight.

He will be something to watch with 1st string OLine.

Re: Cade unpopular opinion

He is the best QB on the roster and it is not close. He needs time with the 1s to get comfortable. There is a lot of denial and sunk cost fallacy going on with DJ. I ask people to remember what 4 years of Logan Thomas did for the Va Tech program. I don’t want that to be us.

Umm no. He has the most potential, but he is currently not the best.

Sep 23, 2022, 8:49 AM [ in reply to Re: Cade unpopular opinion ]

but he doesn't look ready yet. Also, it's not like the 1st string OL is some dominant group that's going to give Cade 5 seconds of clean pocket to survey the field. They haven't performed well this year either.

Were you high on DJ after his first 13?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Cade unpopular opinion

Sep 22, 2022, 8:11 PM

DJ was always the QB. Cade has not played meaningful snaps and at this point there has been no reason for him to do so. If DJ gets hurt, hopefully between Cade and Hunter, we will have a backup we can win with.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yeah, after a couple dozen plays with 2nd and 3rd string..

Sep 22, 2022, 8:12 PM

Cade obviously sucks. That's a shame he couldn't impress you.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Yeah, after a couple dozen plays with 2nd and 3rd string..

Sep 22, 2022, 8:19 PM

I didn’t say he sucks just doesn’t look ready yet. He seems to tuck it and run without staying in the pocket. I know it’s been 3 games and he’s going to be special

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

You didn't say anything about him not being ready yet.

Sep 22, 2022, 8:25 PM

He hasn't impressed you playing with the 2nd and 3rd string. You think he could suit you better if he was playing with the 1's?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: You didn't say anything about him not being ready yet.

Sep 22, 2022, 9:41 PM

So he would tuck and run faster with the 1’s?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

You think the WR 1's get open more often?

Sep 22, 2022, 10:30 PM

That, ane you reckon the OL RBs are all better on the 1's too? And that helps the QB? What do you think?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Yeah, after a couple dozen plays with 2nd and 3rd string..

Sep 23, 2022, 7:31 AM [ in reply to Re: Yeah, after a couple dozen plays with 2nd and 3rd string.. ]

Well, Cade didn’t get equal reps. There really wasn’t a QB “battle” in camp, the starter was predetermined. DJ has improved, more so than I thought he would. However, we’ve scored 3 offensive TD’s in the first half in 3 games, two of which playing FCS opponents. One of those set up by a blocked punt putting the ball at the opponents 5. We had to go for that one on fourth down to score. Just hope when the bright lights come on and better opponents start using creative blitzes, he can adjust. I hope DJ doesn’t get dinged and we need Cade to win. Then, the lack of equal play or reps will bite us and it won’t be Cade’s fault. It’s all good until it’s not.

It’s the coaches call. Go Tigers !!!

This is a hot take alright.

Sep 22, 2022, 8:21 PM

Put him in with the one’s and he will drive down the field. He’ll have freshmen moments, but the kid is really good.

Sep 22, 2022, 8:34 PM

Not saying he isn’t good. Would love to see him with more than 1 drive with the ones.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

You said he didn’t impress you. Tell me what you mean by that then.

Sep 22, 2022, 8:40 PM

DJ didn’t impress anyone last year because of many circumstances. Might you use the same reasoning with Cade in turn? He’s playing with the 2’s and mostly 3’s so far.

Re: This is a hot take alright.

Sep 23, 2022, 8:15 AM [ in reply to This is a hot take alright. ]

Gotta win the game first; using the 1s at wherever we are in the season (i.e., the current slate of our first team) is the best way to win.

The 2s then get in when the game is comfortably in control. That's why Cade gets few snaps than DJ.

Period.

This not a new concept in football or the use of 2s during a FB game.

Sep 22, 2022, 8:33 PM

He's a little jumpy. He seems to expect the play to develop quickly which maybe it should. He's out of the pocket almost immediately.

When I have seen Cade in these home games “on tv” I see a freshman Johnny Manziel running for his life in that #2 jersey. He has to and will comfortable as the season and years go along.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Not every true freshman QB…

Sep 22, 2022, 9:52 PM

comes as “plug and play” as Deshaun Watson or Trevor Lawrence. In time, Cade will be the man and I’m certain he will surpass DJU sooner that many here think.

Lots of wishful thinking with DJ. I want to see a scatter plot of his throws that doesn’t utterly neglect the middle of the field and doesn’t consist of only 30/70 balls to the boundary or screen passes behind the line of scrimmage.

And as for mobility, well… not even worth discussing.

badge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: DJ and over the middle: WRs get alligator arms

Sep 23, 2022, 8:22 AM

When our WRs run their over-the-middle routes and DJ throws the ball to them, too often the WRs get alligator arms in anticipation of a Safety or LB crashing into them.

We have not identified any receivers who will run the slant routes without frequently worrying more about contact after-the-catch then they do about catching the ball.

Look, it takes real courage for a WR to run a slant route and then commit completely to catching the ball.

Until the WRs show consistency on that key over-the-middle route, expect the Streeter and DJ to keep emphasizing outside routes.

He the most talented QB on the roster. Looking back, it’ll be seen as missed opportunity not letting him work through his freshman happy feet issues against Furman and La tech to get him ready for NCState

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Smoltz was Braves most talented; Glavine was better

Sep 23, 2022, 8:28 AM

Cade being the most talented QB on the roster as of this time does not make him the best QB at this time.

Atlanta Braves analogy from the early 1990s:

John Smoltz was clearly the most talented among the Braves starters back then.

However, Tom Glavine was clearly the better pitcher during the early 1990's.

Glavine was simply more developed than Smoltz back then; Glavine was the better pitcher then before Smoltz had finished developing.

Same with DJ and Cade as of 2022.

Re: Cade unpopular opinion

Sep 22, 2022, 11:29 PM

At this point, DJ is clearly the starter. Couch QB’s seem to know more than the $10 million/year coach. Funny.

And the ones calling for Cade to play with the 1’s should remember Trevor played with the backups and won the job. They also need to remember only two true freshmen QBs have ever won a national championship and Trevor was one of them. Cade is a talented QB but Trevor was generational.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Cade unpopular opinion

Sep 23, 2022, 6:27 AM

Certainly DJ is better. Reason a very simple offense almost nauseating. Prob going to take a loss to see Cade more. We will see if Streeter can be successful

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Cade unpopular opinion

Sep 23, 2022, 7:38 AM

DJ should be the starter for now. Cade will eventually be the man. There's the leadership thing that people forget about. This team is behind DJ. If he struggles and Cade relieves him and has success then the team will get behind Cade. Cade is learning so much just watching from the sidelines right now. Hopefully he will get some more snaps in the coming weeks. From what little I've seen he's the most talented. He's confident in his ability and will take chances. Young talented quarterbacks are proned to making big mistakes. They also make big plays. Right now Clemson doesn't need big plays they just don't need big mistakes. That's the dilemma the coaches have to deal with for now. The coaches are hoping DJ can make the plays while trying to get Cade ready for the future.
