CADE: "I haven't REALLY pratcticed with the 1's since Fall"

Dec 4, 2022, 6:34 AM

Let Cade's statement sink in. The guy who just set the record in the ACC title game for completion percentage and was responsible for what - 4 TD's has NOT been practicing with the other starters for MONTHS now. He made that statement to Mark Richt in his post-game interview. Un-freaking-beleivable.

yep I heard it and Mark asked Cade prior so he never got a chance all season. Some on here are so blinded by Dabo they can’t or just don’t want to think coach screwed the pooch this year.

I even hope the most loyal Dabo fans like myself s see that he definitely blew it this season. This season will always have an asterisk by it as “what could have been…”

Yeah you’re right. 11-2, conference championship and a new year’s day bowl.

What a waste.

Makes you wonder if there is tension between Dabo and Cade.

Dec 4, 2022, 8:17 AM

The handling of our QB situation this year has to be on Dabo, no way he let Streeter make the decisions. He is to much of a micromanager. Cade’s post game comments are telling. We thought he just wasn’t getting opportunities during games. Now we find out he wasn’t getting opportunities in practice. It may just be me but Dabo just didn’t seem to give Cade the type of credit and praise he would have heaped on DW and TL in the same situation. Dabo was really just starting to get heat from the national media about DJ’s performance over the last two years which may have forced his hand to play Cade last night. Something seems off with Dabo and Cade.

I’m extremely happy we won last night. But if Cade had much more practice and game experience earlier this year we would be a force and headed to the playoffs.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Maybe the Battle for time on the field was never between Cade an DJ …

Dec 4, 2022, 8:41 AM

… maybe not playing Cade was about Cade vs Vizzina.

I would have thought Dabo would be heaping praise on Cade and saying, in retrospect, maybe Cade should have played more … but that didn’t happen.

And Streeter said he thought they handled everything great with the QB situation.

That made me scratch my head. And kept me thinking…

Without a significant body of work, all you have is practice, that only the team sees, so there’s no scrutiny… and thus no real argument to who starts.

But Dabo has gotten so much heat about not playing Cade, and with DJ starting out so badly, he knew he had to play Cade to try to win the Championship. He just didn’t expect him to set the record for completion percentage for the game.

Now Cade goes into next year as the starter and Vizzina is the challenger instead of both of them being on equal footing.

What made me come to this conclusion? The staff’s continual denial that they did anything wrong and the significantly underwhelming amount of praise for Cade’s play last night.

Maybe Dabo will come out and be the old Dabo again soon … I hope so.

Thoughts??

The fact that Cade looked so good in spite of this gives me hope that he is the real deal. Dabo needs knocking off his high horse and this is one time I’m thankful the media ain’t letting it die

Re: CADE: "I haven't REALLY pratcticed with the 1's since Fall"

Dec 4, 2022, 8:33 AM

I agree. I do think that there were times pre Syracuse that Cade may have not been ready, but we never got to see him with any meaningful playing time so we do not know exactly what was what earlier. By the time DJ started getting into his 2021 mental funk in the Syracuse game Cade should have gotten a percentage of reps with the 1’s. I do not and will not understand why this did not happen and why Cade did not get a few series of time in games to give him a feel and to start getting him some experience so that he would be ready for what was to come. Putting him in at Notre Dame cold off the bench, down 14 and starting at your own five yard line is not what I am talking about. The staff mishandled this situation. Period. What is done is done but I sure hope that some lessons have been learned. Now let’s get ready for the Orange bowl and finish this season. Go Tigers!!!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I was trying to tell people this all year. Especially after

Dec 4, 2022, 8:36 AM

the ND game. It was insane and ridiculous to throw Cade in there without any time with the 1s and expect a miracle, yet he did it against Syracuse and probably would have done it with Notre Dame had the coaches actually made the switch earlier or even just stuck with him after the one bad play.

"Steph Curry" had "one bad game" against Syracuse then continued the SAME EXACT PLAY against ND and they still didn't want to pull him. They put Cade in a really bad situation and he made a mistake under pressure and after 1 play they bench him. Just absolute insanity and terrible decision making.

Re: CADE: "I haven't REALLY pratcticed with the 1's since Fall"

Dec 4, 2022, 8:38 AM

I posted this in another thread, but it got buried, and I still think it's relevant so....

Cade's lack of practice reps with the 1's is exactly what I'd heard and something that made me seriously question our coaching staff in a way I haven't since Dabo took over.

I looked out at Cade running around and zipping balls all over the lot, putting catchable balls on time to his receivers - something I've rarely seen from DJU - and hey, the dude can actually make the correct read on RPO's, something I almost never saw from DJU. And whaddya know, the offense suddenly started running like it should have.

I saw a guy who was Deshaun or Trevor out there...exactly as advertised, in fact. Klubnik had the same five stars on his tin that Trevor and Deshaun did.

But the real question here is: how exactly did our offensive staff somehow not notice this guy was better than DJU, and not give him any snaps with the 1's until this freaking week? Because I had folks telling me exactly the same thing, that they hadn't seen Cade taking snaps with the 1's all year long...and also, that Cade's talent was obvious to anyone with eyes.

That's a level of dysfunction on the level of Tampa Bay's staff once having John Randall in camp and deciding he was too small to play for them...whereupon they cut him, and he got picked up by Minnesota, where they then had to play him two times every year his entire career.

Actually this is worse. This is a quarterback we are talking about.

What on Earth happened here? Because this is...troubling. Real troubling.

Dec 4, 2022, 10:29 AM [ in reply to Re: CADE: "I haven't REALLY pratcticed with the 1's since Fall" ]

Great post quozzel. You summed up a lot of my thoughts / questions. Why our QBs were managed the way they were this season is a head scratcher. As baffling as it was, on a lot of levels, highly doubt we’ll ever know.

I know Dabo is hbc, understand he’s earned the right to do it his way and recognize he won’t offer any public explanation as to why he handled the QBs this way. He couldn’t care less about what 99.9% of us think, perhaps bar those who donate big money. Got it. Go Tigers.

I will say, CDS and our coaching staff displayed some moves this year that will be hard to explain away in recruiting. And if what they’re saying publicly is any indication, they flat out need to get some better coach speak. Good players and good kids will still come to Clemson. It’s a great place to be. I just can’t help but wonder how this will play out in recruiting. Some players will look at that self inflicted QB s-show and say, no thanks. I suspect some WRs already did. When everyone saw what happened, then we find out Cade didn’t get reps with the 1s, CDS stayed with DJ until he literally couldn’t complete a pass, contributed to us not making the CFP… every other coach in the game will rightly use that against us.

No matter how bad the ACC is this year. winning last night was big. And doing it with Cade helped too. We lose last night riding DJ down like Dr Strangelove and we are on a much different trajectory. I am grateful for how last night’s game played out in many ways. DJ graduates / transfers, Cade plays the OB and hopefully plays well. Last night’s game reduced the downside impacts of our QB mishandling but didn’t eliminate them. Some damage was done. Hopefully we win big in the orange bowl and help put that nonsense further in the past.

This does explain why the "off the depth chart" receivers had such good games. They were the guys with whom Cade had practiced.

Re: CADE:

Dec 4, 2022, 8:53 AM

That comment made me sick. Every qb2 should get some 1s practice every now and then in case the starter goes down. Especially after syracuse when you could see the struggles dj was having.

And how can dabo tell that cade wasn't ready if he never practiced with the 1s. What did Dabo base that determination on? His plays with the 2s?

2024 orange level member flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

If he HAD gotten time with the 1s …

Dec 4, 2022, 9:40 AM

… how much better would he had been last night? A couple of throws were catchable .. probably on the receivers… that means a whopping 23/24 completion in a championship game?!

It couldn’t have been much better, so that is even more of a plus for Cade because he’s good enough to hit anyone, anywhere, any time with no practice with them since fall camp (I believe HIS answer). That is SCARY GOOD!!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Physically the staff knows what they recruited, in practice

Dec 4, 2022, 9:51 AM

and other, you're graded on the process between the ears.

Right reads, right adjustments, right calls, right targets, right progressions, right pre & post snap management, how you work through your must haves and those around you as the "coach" on the field.

The closer you are to the middle, the more you need to know. That's why the MLB is often the caller on defense.

The first read of a QB is to help ID the defenses "middle", which is why you'll sometimes see the QB & center point to a defender. That "middle" begins and/or sets the blocking scheme and calls.

It's not just about, see spot run, see spot throw and never has been.

I dont think cade was given a fair chance if he did not get to practice or be evaluated with the 1 team. You can say its some other aspects but I saw what I saw on the field.

Change my mind. :)

Re: CADE: "I haven't REALLY pratcticed with the 1's since Fall"

Dec 4, 2022, 9:56 AM

The coaching staff handed the whole season to DJU and there really never was a competition, after the way DJ played in 2021. Dabo said in post-game, "everything is earned here", something to that effect. Yet DJ was the almost the worst qb in D1 last year and that "earned" him the starting job for 2022 un-challenged? How does that make sense? And Cade wasn't "ready" 7 days ago vs. the dirt peckers and then looked like DW4 last night? Please
