No one's THAT nerdy here, right?

May 9, 2022, 3:25 PM

The greatest resource on the English language is the epic Oxford English Dictionary, the OED. This ain't just some book you can put on your shelf, of course. You can buy it on paper: 20 volumes for around $1,000. You can also subscribe to it online for $100 a year.

So, has anyone here ever, or would you ever, subscribe to the OED? I think it'd be really cool, but I can't justify the cost.

The OED's feature tracking the history/first usage of words is pretty cool. I wouldn't buy it but I would expect a local library would have a copy if you needed to use it or wanted to check it out (no pun intended).

Maybe some libraries would have an access point

for the online edition. Not sure how common it would be for a library to have the print edition available for perusal.

By the way, as far as I can tell, the most recent

edition you can buy on paper is the 2nd edition, from 1989. They add thousands of words every year. They've been working on a third edition for over 20 years! Not done yet!

Personally...

I see no justifortification that necessiticates my needificationalism of a $1000 concordaninatical book of words.

One of the worst punishments I ever got in school was for talking too much in 1st grade. Because I was talking, my teacher made me copy a page from the dictionary, front and back. Ouch.

For a 6-year old that was utter he77. My hand hurt so bad it cramped. Now, while I still wouldn't enjoy it today, I might find at least find it interesting and informative.

Now, you can just scan it.

Did you quit talking? Or, find some other way toact out?

Frankly, I was stunned. All year long he kept moving me from seat to seat in the class. "Mr. Fordt, would you kindly move to the open seat behind Jenny" or, "Please move to the seat beside Johnny."

I thought it was an opportunity to make new friends, so naturally I just struck up a conversation with whomever he put me beside.

Finally he moved me to the hall, by myself, with a pencil, a pad of paper, and a big fat dictionary.

It wasn't till I started writing, all by myself, that I realized it might be a punishment of some sort.
